  • We all buy a tractor now and then that we did not intend to come home with right? Well, this is one of those cases.
Back in early April I was in the market for a 50" mower deck for either my other 318 or 322. The seller had this 318 out back that he was looking to let go at price that was too good to refuse. Low and behold, it ended up in the bed of my truck. I've been busy working on other projects and machines so I haven't had the time this summer to begin working on it. Now that I have a little spare time in my schedule this fall, I will be digging into this 318. Granted it's rough around the edges but the P218G seems to have a decent amount of compression so it has potential. I plan to get it running first before doing other work on it.
It's an early 1989 model, according to the serial number indicating it's the 82nd 318 produced for that year. It has a 1988 Onan P218G Spec 'B' engine which not to long after was replaced by the Spec 'C'. The difference being that the 'B' has the breather in the #1 cylinder tappet cover and the 'C' has it coming out of the right rear corner of top of the engine block. Due to this they used different air filter bases. This engine has casting marks on the block in what looks like preparations for the 'C' style breather setup. The sightly newer 1989 model I owned before this in some of my previous videos had a Spec 'C' engine. So it leads me to think that this was made right around the cutoff for different Spec P218G engines. Not that this makes the engine better or worse than others. I just thought this was an interesting tidbit.
    Thanks for watching!

I've been eager to see this project! It really seems like a solid tractor. I think my uncle might still have the old rockshaft off the '85 318 if you need one.

1982johndeere317 Thanks! Keep searching! The best deals from what I’ve found seem to pop up when people are doing Spring/Fall cleaning.
