I havent tried the 8 but the 12 is leaps and bounds above the xaymaca for me personally. Obviously price plays a factor aswell so the 12 should be better. Really need to get around to trying the 8 at some point.
I get why people may like Xaymaca and Smith & Cross but I find the finish tastes like bitter grapefruit pith which I don't care for. I'm no expert but for me, right now, if I had to pick one it would be Plantation Original Dark. It's Barbados and Jamaican, and has a rich smooth flavor with that roasted molasses edge but not the grapefruit pith. I made my last Mai Tais with 50/50 Appleton 12 and Plantation OD. I also split my orange liqueur 50/50 between Grand Marnier for the darker notes and Clément Créole Shrubb for the brighter spicier notes. I also tend to use less of the flavorings compared to the rum. I prefer the balance. 1 Appleton 12 1 Plantation OD 3/4 Lime Juice 1/4 Grand Marnier 1/4 Clément Créole Shrubb 1/4 Giffard Orgeat Dash Black Walnut Bitters Small pinch of Salt
Still havent got round to doing that Jamaican comparison I bought from you. Was at the start of my journey when i first tried xyamaca. Need to revisit.
Thanks so much for the awesome review! I am literally trying to decide between the Appleton and the plantation right now so this is perfect timing., like you, I absolutely love a good high water funk. If you can ever get your hands on Doctor Bird or Doctor Bird Pineapple, I think you’ll be a happy bird
I do like the Appleton 12 and 8 but felt the Zaymaca makes a much better Mai Tai. I think the zero dosage allows the characteristics of the rum come through and helps provide a better finish ❤. Now we have to see how it holds up against the rounds of rivals 😅.
Nice! I’m curious to see how the other pot still Jamaican rums will do? Although App 12 is my fave I feel like this is where Smith & Cross will shine. There’s also the Hampden Estate Overproof, Worthy Park Single Estate, Myers, and Rum Bar Gold that might do well as well. Excited for this series haha
Pot stilled has a particular taste that I'm not sure that I'm crazy about. The Appletons, being a blend of pot and column stilled, has a nice balance that I find tasty. The pure pot stilled rums like this and Denizen Merchant Reserve 8 (I know, it has some Martinique rum mixed in) are a bit too much for me. Out of the three, for a one Mai Tai rum, I prefer the 8 year, with the 12 year a very close second.
My mai tai is usually Appleton 12 and el dorado 12 blend…..however I have a few mai tais last night and I had one with smith & cross and another one with navy island Jamaican rum And I have to say I prefer both the smith and cross and navy island mai tai over my previous favourite Appleton 12/El dorado 12 blend Both smith and navy island are 54% 👀👀 I haven’t seen you use navy island yet but I recommend it
Xaymaca is about £22 for 750 mL here in Ontario Canada. Cheaper by about $5 CAD than A8 and $15 CAD than A12. I have to be honest. I always own all three. I love the flavour of this one. I know it’s not max funk or anything, but it has that character that Appleton doesn’t (though I love that too). All three within like £9, Steve. You just need them all at that point. Haha.
Added: and how much of this stuff would you have if it were £22 for you. Man. I was complaining we don’t get Chairman’s but at least we get this for an amazing deal.
Ester levels on the Xaymaca are actually pretty high for Rums under £50/$85 Can. People don’t realise that. They always think Smith & Cross is a lot Funkier. It’s not. Maybe even technically less Esters. It’s just S&C is stronger. So unless you are willing to spend a lot more on Hampden 8… or use a White Overproof, then Xaymaca is pretty much as Funky as you get for the money. 👍
Plantation X this side of the Channel is cheaper than in the UK but still overpriced compared to the US: 30 EUR. They're basically giving it away over the pond 😢

I've had the eight and the twelve year I prefer the eight year
For me the 12 doesn’t have the strong funk that I want that the xaymaca gives me. Both great rums though

Xaymaca is like a floral banana nut bread with some Jamaican tire ❤ chef’s kiss

I’m usually a no added sugar, ironic sense rum is made from rum, but the Plantation Pineapple is amazing.

I’m also currently aging Wray and nephew in a litre aging barrel…..it’s been 30days so looking forward to using it in a mai tai aswell
I prefer the dosage.

I get Plantation Xaymaca in California for $21.
Same. In Cali it's the cheapest of the three.
It would appear that Xaymaca is over-priced in the UK, because over here in the midwest Xaymaca is always right around $25.
Agreed, Plantation's around $25 here in the northeast US, Appleton 8 for $32 and 12 year for $45usd
