Championship was played at the Tokyo National Stadium. Reigning J.League champions Júbilo Iwata (blue & white)
once again faced Kashima Antlers (red), and the Antlers were looking to avenge their
surprise defeat to Júbilo the year before. But this year, Júbilo had their World Cup-winning talisman Dunga (No.8) available, to make his debut appearance in the competition. Would the Brazilian veteren be able to inspire Júbilo to
