That, is watching a master at work; amazing sound, timelessly great riffs. Jimmy Page said it best when he described Edge as a "sonic architect". Exactly right.
Jimmy Page himself was excellent at crafting multiple parts with his guitar (you can really notice it in studio vs live Led Zep recordings), so I'll take his word for it.
I'm always amazed by the Edge's humility. To play his part and sing his part and be a part of a whole. He is an amazing talent by himself, no doubt. But as a part of U2 and the songs and the lyrics and even his harmonizing vocals, he is truly able to become something that is greater than the sum of its parts - U2.
First u2 song I learned because I had to know how it was done. My 7 y/o son saw this video and when it got to Bad he remarked, "Daddy u play that song!". So gratifying. Thank you, Edge.
The amazing part about the Edge is he can take normal simple notes and make something extraordinary out of them. He has created a world with his guitar. And he has created his own sound. This makes him one of the greats.
nick arlotto In my opinion his playing is nothing special, there a many better guitarists out there. However, he knows his effects and knows how to use them. Building that sound is a talent he certainly has.

The Edge has created a sound that is his own - you can automatically tell its his guitar playing - no one else. everyone that hates on edge and his sound do us a favor - make as much money and become as successful as he has then come back and argue that he sucks.
When he plays Pride, I can hear Bono singing. Edge’s tone is built to fit with the other three guys. His sound is complete yet inseparable from the band.
If anyone thinks Edge can't play guitar, just search for their song, "Wire," and get back to me. It's damn near impossible to play. I think he's a genius.
I hear parts of until the end... and get goosebumps :-) its such an amazing tune... U2 forever edge forever even more! Hope see you guys in Dublin this year!
This is one of the greatest sounds and songs in rock in the past 30 years. A true innovator who threw away the rule book and the constraints of the guitar stereotypes - a watercolor of sound that gives U2 that something special. As a guitar player who can play Fade to Black as easily as this (and a lover of all lead guitar schools) this man and his contibutions to the rock and roll and guitar are right up there. Esge we salute you.
He invented a new guitar sound and style, His airy chords along to the colours he adds to the band's songs are spectacular. That's what makes him a GREAT GUITARIST and a GREAT MUSICIAN. It's not about technique or popularity, it's about musicality and invention. And he is great at that.
This guy is a legend! I can listen his guitar sound during hours and hours! Technic? And? Example of right rift, simple but very very powerful! You are thé best Dave! From a french bassist! I would met you in eze, just to tell you : thanks for magic music!
Edge has written some of the most iconic, riff-laden, memorable guitar licks in the history of rock. I'm a guitar snob, and I think he's a total badass. He deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as Clapton, Page, Hendrix....because he's that good. Take those classic U2 songs he played in this clip, and put your run-of-the-mill barre chords on them that most guitarists would schlep, and they become forgettable accompaniment to Bono's singing.
I dont know how he does it...so simple but packed full of feeling. If you are even an intermediate player you could play these things...but making them up is whole other story....love it.
A few ridiculous comments here. He is a guitar player. He loves what he does. He has a load of iconic riffs. Whether you like U2 or not, they have had hits over 3 or 4 decades. They are obviously talented. He just does what he does and is a likeable guy.
His sound is so awesome and unique. He may not play a million notesva second but he doesnt have to he has his own unique style of being reserved an finding the perfect sound, never trying to copy anyone else. A true musician if you ask me. Full of soul.
While I've always been an Edge fan and have found the fashionability of slating him as some kind of technically limited hack as little more than odious bullshit (ESPECIALLY when discussing this movie), it's only recently that I've begun to realise just how good he actually is. I recently got a guitar teacher and one of the first things he's made me do is to learn how to play slowly and cleanly, exposing the value and colour of every selected note and restraining yourself from whizzy frills, and I can tell you that it is actually HARDER to pull off than the traditional ideas on 'virtuosity' and 'shredding' just don't try telling that to the Jimmy Page fanboys
Slowly and cleanly is fine. But the guitar has a range of emotions that require both 'slow' and 'fast' playing...the Edge is definitely lacking one...and I love how ones with this lack of versatility lean on the 'slow playing is more soulful argument'. Yeah, I believe it when it comes from the mouth of a guitarist that can do both, but you have to be suspicious of a guitarist that can't play fast dissing fast playing.
krelbar Not sure which one you think he is lacking? The Edge is skilled at just about everything. Punk music "Exit", solo's "Bullet the blue sky" "The Fly" I could go on and on. He doesn't fit what most guitar stereotypes are and thats a good thing because frankly speaking when the world was rocking to 80s hairbands The Edge was doing something far more interesting. A good example would be Van Halens 5150 and The Joshua Tree came out about the same time. The Joshua Tree is considered a classic rock album....5150, not so much. ....wait a minute how can that be? I mean Eddie just played like a million more frantically cool notes on that album then the Edge did on the Joshua Tree. The Edge out classed him.
That's what I allways liked about this guy. He might not be the greatest virtuoso, but he substracts the most out of his talent and the technics he has. And he has a great feeling for sounds that satisfy the ear.
I choke up. Dunno what to say. Bad might be the most beautiful song since Claire de Lune. Thank you Irish no ones for speaking for us everyones. ❤️❤️❤️
Yes! Well put. Just because you don’t play, doesn’t mean you can’t have an opinion. Unless you say a song is easy and haven’t tried to play it... anyway, I think that the edge is overrated. He isn’t a bad guitarist, but I bet anyone after one year of playing, with enough inspiration, could do what he did. I can’t say the same for Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Juingve Malmsteen, or others. I don’t think that the Edge is great. He’s a pioneer for sure, but he’s mediocre at best.
@fuss You're down here in the RUclips comment section talking repeatedly about how much Edge "sucks." When people don't actually like someone, they don't waste time commenting about it - repeatedly. People who make an effort to defend how much they can't stand something/someone, means they're more jealous/envious. But sure - keep on telling everyone how much you think Edge sucks. LOL
I love the band but his guitar is what always stands out to me. My god, my brother brought home the album boy on leave from germany and I have been hooked ever since.
Wow, I havent seen this video in wuite sometime. I really enjoy it. Love to hear you talk. Love your Irish accent. Think you are the greatest guitarist ever.
As a rock fan, seems like The Edge isn't a super skilled guitarist like a Page or Eddie Van Halen, but he gets cool, meaningful sounds....thats what an artist does
My most favorite thing about The Edge is....his beanie. It's like super glued to his head. I wonder if he showers with his beanie on and goes to bed with it on.
i could listen to this man play guitar all day long. if i got the chance to meet him and he was playing id literally just sit down, smile, keep my mouth shut and enjoy every damn second. God.... he's an artist in the purest sense.
I love it when he starts playing Bad and the camera starts to pan out. Its a powerful song, he conveys meaning and message in his guitar playing so well.
Apparently you people don't know anything lol You HAVE to know about timing and picking skills to play with delay. Not everyone can play with it lol AND I have personally seen U2 live. He does NOT use delay on every song lol He is one of the greatest chord progressive players of all time according to a lot of great guitarists.
Something so special about his guitar tone. Growing up with their songs, it takes me back, hearing him play this. Beautiful.
The Edge is more of a guitar engineer than just a composer. He makes his guitar sound right all the times. He designs his sound.

By definition there is no “right” or “wrong” way to play guitar. It’s art. Would you say that Van Gogh painted “Starry Night” wrong?
100% It's simple stuff done well.
compilation of The Edge SINGING:

it's like he combined rock with the Celtic ambient style...he defined the 80s spirit to be free
He's a great songwriter and a tone god- what else do you need? Playing fast and flashy means nothing- WHAT you play and how it sounds means everything
i could watch and listen to him play and talk all day
He sounds just like that guy from U2
He is the U2 )))
Viktor Danilov i think he knows.
an uncanny similarity
Yeah, whats his name? The Ledge? The Hedge?
The EDGE ))
BAD rules , one of my fave songs along with Out Of Control which was the first U2song I ever heard in '79 , still love 'em ! Cheers , Neilo .
Agreed
the secret behind great u2 songs is the simple tasty melodies played in such a cool way. it's really fun to watch this guy play guitar.
one of the most true guitar artists ever...he doesnt just play, he designs his sounds and form
I really love this set. I have to make myself a home studio exactly like that. Beautiful rug, cozy chairs, guitar stands, low lightning. So soothing.
He invented a new guitar sound and style,
His airy chords along to the colours he adds to the band's songs are spectacular.
If you are even an intermediate player you could play these things...but making them up is whole other story....love it.
this is why i picked up the guitar and started playin...... thank you edge !!!!!
a very talented guitarist ,hes amazing at writing melodies and rhythm playing he deserves his success x
Creator of a unique sound. Reason why so many love U2.
I love the tones that he makes..gives me goosebumps every time
A few ridiculous comments here. He is a guitar player. He loves what he does. He has a load of iconic riffs. Whether you like U2 or not, they have had hits over 3 or 4 decades. They are obviously talented. He just does what he does and is a likeable guy.
I could listen to this all day long. It so friggin beautiful.
His sound is so awesome and unique. He may not play a million notesva second but he doesnt have to he has his own unique style of being reserved an finding the perfect sound, never trying to copy anyone else. A true musician if you ask me. Full of soul.
Until the end of the world is such a good song an riff
A-freaking-MEN Ben Evans!
Thanks for your insightful and well-informed reply
Slowly and cleanly is fine. But the guitar has a range of emotions that require both 'slow' and 'fast' playing...the Edge is definitely lacking one...and I love how ones with this lack of versatility lean on the 'slow playing is more soulful argument'. Yeah, I believe it when it comes from the mouth of a guitarist that can do both, but you have to be suspicious of a guitarist that can't play fast dissing fast playing.
krelbar I can do both, and spent my earlier years on the latter, actually, and there's the live solo to Bullet The Blue Sky, if you wish to see
krelbar Not sure which one you think he is lacking?
Great rhythmical/percussive playing. He really knows how to turn the delay in to an "instrument" unto itself.
unforgettable sound.amazing
I choke up. Dunno what to say. Bad might be the most beautiful song since Claire de Lune. Thank you Irish no ones for speaking for us everyones. ❤️❤️❤️
The Pride intro gets me every time
He wrote those riffs. Remember that. He made those things up one day.
+Stuart Hardy Cull No shit man thats why he is playing in a band
That’s how writing songs works? He sucks though.
What do you mean? His shit is the fucking easiest to copy.
Yes!
LOL
Amazing guitarist of our time and for the future.. thank you for posting.. wish we had more
i love how there is nothing but comments praising The Edge, and very much deserved... nothing but Legend
Farm Box shoukd have come 2 years ago....the real "guitar virtuosos of this planet" really dedicated their time in the hate comments. 😂
hahahaha i can only imagine
I love the band but his guitar is what always stands out to me. My god, my brother brought home the album boy on leave from germany and I have been hooked ever since.
Wow, I havent seen this video in wuite sometime. I really enjoy it. Love to hear you talk. Love your Irish accent. Think you are the greatest guitarist ever.
He’s my favorite guitarist of all time.
That's sad
He is a scientist, pure and simple. Man I love watching and listening to him work.
Whether or not you respect him as a guitarist, you have to admit that what comes out of the speaker sounds beautiful🤷♂️
As a rock fan, seems like The Edge isn't a super skilled guitarist like a Page or Eddie Van Halen, but he gets cool, meaningful sounds....thats what an artist does
And his use of harmonics is so brilliant
Absolutely
the best sound architect ever! thanks Edge for everything!
My most favorite thing about The Edge is....his beanie. It's like super glued to his head. I wonder if he showers with his beanie on and goes to bed with it on.
He wears it not because he is cold, or thinks it's cool. It's because he has a massive slap head
+tom richardson yeah I know, it's just so a part of him. It's hard to imagine him without it
+tom richardson he hasn't enough money to transplant new hair?
That's not the issue his head was made for hats and making musical wonder.
He looks about 80 when the hat is off. Bald as a coot x
i could listen to this man play guitar all day long. if i got the chance to meet him and he was playing id literally just sit down, smile, keep my mouth shut and enjoy every damn second. God.... he's an artist in the purest sense.
I'd love to have a whole CD of just Edge and his riffs
Fantastic bonus footage, thanks for sharing! Couldn't stop smiling during Pride. What tone, what an iconic part.
If you can recognize a guitar player from the first few phrases of a song, then it's a sign of a truly brilliant artist. The Edge is exactly that.
+Vader-I-Vader that was awful lot of sarcasm. And i spotted it through the internet.
well I guess your the expert and everyone needs to confirm with you on everything
