I just came back from an overnight stay at a lake. I just bought a Garmin Vivid 5, so I can make my own bathymetric maps. I noticed in water that looks like it's about 5 feet, it shows to be about 10 or even 11 feet on the sounder. It's shooting through almost six feet of soft vegetation and marl before it gets a hard enough bottom! Really good to know.

Ok, so if I understand your video correctly thick dark bottom on Garmin echo means soft (muddy) bottom. How it looks on the screen (color and thickness) when the bottom is hard? Because one of reason for buying echo is to recognize bottom hardness from the screen without need to drop something down on line.
By the way in the Garmin webinars they say opposite. Dark thick bottom line means hard bottom. So who is right?

      1) this is a Garmin Striker 4 not an Echo. 2) No-one in this video says anything about a "thick dark bottom" being equal to a soft muddy bottom. 3) In our experience, and what we are showing on the video, is that the number displayed in the top left corner seems to match with where the forceps stop (the hard bottom), and that can be deeper than where the bottom shows on the display. In the example shown in the video the forceps disappear at approx 22' but continue to fall into the soft bottom (out of view of fish) another 2ish' confirming that the top of the soft bottom (where the fly will be visible to fish) matches with what is displayed (where the blue meets the red), but the the actual hard bottom is a couple feet deeper as indicated by the number in the top left. 4) Nothing has to be dropped to know where the hard and soft bottoms are ... just look at the display, soft bottom starts where the blue meets the red and the hard bottom = the number in the top left. We only dropped the forceps to demonstrate what we were explaining. 5) I don't think there is a conflict with what we are saying vs what Garmin writes in their manual, likely the confusion is in the terminology, but regardless you are seeing a live demo showing the forceps fall into/through the soft bottom (as displayed on the screen where the blue meets the red) and landing/stopping at the hard bottom (as indicated by the number in the top left) so I don't think there can really be any confusion ...

@@BCFlyguys great explanation Rob, and clear as mud ! ;)
Did you get the upgraded transducer for this model, and if so, which one ? I'm looking to purchase one, and the Garmin site always talks about upgrading the transducer. Thanks
