Transylvania, a place we have all heard of…
A medieval landscape with mysterious tales of ghosts, werewolfs and, vampires… but is there truth behind the scary stories?
In 1456, a man of the Dracul family, Vlad Dracula came into power over these lands.
He had a particular thirst for blood… his enemies would be left out to die on long wooden stakes, around 80,000 of them in his time, gaining him the nickname Vlad The Impaler. He was killed in battle in 1476 at the age of 45, which put an end to his barbaric reign.
Stories passed down through the centuries talking of blood suckers and creatures of the night inspired a man named Bram Stoker.
While he was researching, he read of the atrocities that had been committed by Vlad Dracula and in 1897 Bram Stoker’s vampire novel, Dracula was born.
Draculas castle was described as being located high above a valley, perched on a rock above where the rivers wind in deep gorges through the forests, somewhere in Transylvania.
The majestic 13th century Bran Castle is the most fitting castle, in the right area, to match Bram Stockers description.
Bran castle holds a bloody history of its own, home to many kings and queens, its also seen many a battle.
The region feels like going back in time, horse and cart are frequent on the old roads, the unspoilt countryside is filled with farmers tending to their land and the smell of log fire fills the air.
We travel to the commune of Bran, a place that has morphed into a center for vampire tourism, a setting which inspired these frightful stories that have spread across the globe and contributed to so much of todays horror culture.

My lovely Romaina wife took me on the castle tour and this was one of them, really enjoyed it. Was going to retire there but she lost her fight with cancer the year I retired.
I’m so sorry for your loss 😢that sucks but glad you got to go somewhere with her before she passed…

Vlad never owned Bran. His main fortress were Peonari and in targoviste. He may have stayed there when Peonari was being fortified, others believe it was before his third ascent to the throne after he was released, right before his assassination. Most of the stories about him drinking blood, etc came from saxon and boyar propaganda of the times - which still lives today and sold many books. But it makes for good tourism . So fictional dracula that turns into a bat - Bram Stoker yes it is thought he picked this castle out of a book in a library (as he had never been), but not the real Vlad. I did enjoy as I do all your videos, and thank you for showing the beauty of the country that runs through 'my veins' :)

We had the privilege of going to Brasov and Bran in 2016 wow! It has never left our hearts and we are returning in March 2023. Draculas Castle is incredible, I would recommend everyone travel to Transylvania.

Sam N Jess, you have no idea how much I appreciate all you guys do. Being I have been confined to a powerwheelchair since 2017 bc of FSHD2 Muscular Dystrophy I can not travel across the pond anymore. Last place I visited was Scotland. So just know I live through YOUR videos bc you are the best on YT !😘😘😘😘

Beautiful video, thanks - but just a correction - Vlad Tepes ("Dracul") never owned Transylvania. He was the ruler of Walachia (which is the southern part of modern day Romania). He did spend some time in Transylvania and was born there, but that's it. I also wonder why he is associated with Transylvania instead of Walachia. So weird haha
Thank you for posting this information clarifying that this was not Vlad Dracula’s castle. I lived in Romania as a child in 1975, 1977 and 1982. We visited the castle ruins of Vlad Dracul where you have to climb something like a thousand steps to reach. It was thrilling! We lived in București and Cluj Napoca and stayed in villages all over the country while my father researched the folk legends. I love Romania!

Thank you for sharing this wonderful adventure with us!!! I love castles!!! Sooo very much maintenance has gone into this place!!! It would be constant maintenance 😳😜😝 The furniture was gorgeous!!! The solid Wooden doors… all handcrafted…simply breathtaking!!! Re-roofing those turrets & roof lines would be a nightmare 👍😰😂🤣 I would have never been able to experience those beautiful staircase’s… being handicapped as I am…if not for you Sam & Jess…sooo thank you from the bottom of my heart 👍❤️♥️
If only walls could talk…I’d be afraid of what they’d say😳😖 Such a different, harsh & unforgiving time back then…thank goodness that it is in the past!!! I, as you, hate spider’s & webs!!! I would have freaked out if I’d have thought that a spider was on me😳😜😝😩😰😢 The countryside was sooo very green & beautiful & the towns were all out of Hansel & Gretel👍❤️ Thank you Jess & Sam for helping me go on a trip of a lifetime!!! Too beautiful. The craftsmanship alone is astonishing! I'm glad Vlad did what was needed at the time it was needed. Times were different way back then.
Wow this is the best video of Dracula's Castle i have seen yet. You showed it as real. I can't help thinking it looked somewhat cosy inside. It is such a beautiful place and i would be all-over those stalls selling things. I love bazars like this. I probably won't ever get to see a place like this due to my disability, so you can imagine how much it means to me to enjoy this. Thanks Guys and brilliant work xx Oh and shared.
This is the castle that supposedly inspired Bram Stoker, but the actual castle ruin of Vlad Dracula The Impaler is in a different part of modern Romania.

Bram castle seems much more commercialised than when I visited 25 years ago. Entrance was free. I wandered round and a woman jumped out of a closet and tried to sell me a pair of hand-knitted socks.

I love this fascinating part of my family's ancestry. I'm bohemian Czech and Romanian on my father's side so this is part of my culture. Vlad was a cruel warlord but one who is still respected for his attempt at keeping my ancestors homeland free from invading forces bent on control and dominance.

Would love to visit Romania someday. My DNA Genetics testing and my genealogy research shows that I have Romanian blood and Vlad Dracul is one of my ancestors. So cool

Transylvania is amazing ,almost magical . for some reason I chose not to visit that castle, Stupid decision. I though there would be too many tourists , idiot me, it's wonderful.

No he was not a Vampire but one mean ass SOB for sure. If he were a Vampire how could he live in a castle with Crucifixes about the place ? No he was a Warlord but he sure lived the life of a very wealthy one & no one dared move against him unless they wished to meet the fate he was so well know to give. What a fascinating castle & it's funny i have a friend that lives in Romania & has all his life but he's never been to the castle . Folks in Romania view it as more a tourist place but they still must have a healthy respect for it. I don't envy the folks that have the job of maintaining this place & i sure would love to see it in person but this was a cool look at what it does look like these days. I found it sort of funny they didn't spend much time down where the Torture Chamber was. Can't much blame them.

Great video guys. I was up for Halloween on 29 October, amazing vibe and great party. Got a few drone shots when I was there on an earlier trip in July. I love your video from inside, really shows how narrow and close quarters it would have been for soldiers so many years ago.

After visiting a cemetery I was driving and my sister told me to pull over. As soon as I did she said "There's a huge spider on your shoulder". I screamed and tore off my sweater. Could have ended badly, she was smart ha. Still live through it when ever I hear scary spider stories. Thanks you guys that was fun!

Bran Castle and Vlad Țepeș were Bram Stoker's inspiration for writing the famous vampire novel Dracula, that's why vampires, bats and the former Wallachian warlord Vlad are associated with this castle.
