  • You may have heard, "shift your chest forward" when making the transition from plank to chaturanga. How forward should go? Do you need to have that "90 degree angle" in you wrists in elbows?     I meant to comment on this months ago. As you know, I always appreciate your tutorials. This has helped me a lot in my vinyasas. Also, one thing I learned from Fiji is that you don’t need to come down halfway. Less than halfway is fine. This has helped so much with shoulder pain I was having before!

    I've been teaching this way and this is an excellent reminder of why - you explain so well! I also activate a lot with the feet - i push the heels back so the pressure is not all on the hands and wrists

    I cannot do the 90 deg elbow because I felt it makes my arms uncomfortable. I do it the same as the way you shown here and have been training myself to get stronger arms.

    I really appreciate this explanation. I'm a yoga instructor. Im not buying that 90° for our wrists is healthy. Yes, we need alignment but if I'm collapsing in chaturanga, I'm going to avoid it instead of teaching or practicing it

    Thank you for this, great video. I sometimes wonder how much of the 90 degree was actually to do with cosmetic/display side of things than functionality (or, as its harder, to prove you 'can').

      Yes, I've wondered that too... the "preparation for arm balances" justification seems a little thin to me. And yes! That little masochistic "because it's hard...." has also crossed my mind. I did get a comment from @toolatte2864 that the 90 degrees was helpful for his form and supporting the health of his elbows, which is definitely good intel ~ though I may not rush to think that that experience is the dominant one...but perhaps good keep the 90 degree version in our back pocket and not toss it entirely ;)

      @@RachelScottYoga Yes, thank you, good advice. Thinking of @toolatte2864 comment, I guess it highlights the importance of listening to our own bodies, to know what is working for us and what not. Personally I'm not a fan of 90 degrees (doesn't feel 'balanced') but I realize that that is perhaps a personal preference rather than any awareness of what is 'right'.

    I definitely agree with you on this. I wonder whether pushing way forward prior lowering is done more by Iyengar teachers than other traditions. I was taught this by an Iyengar teacher but not by my Ashtanga teacher or Hatha yoga teachers.

      Hi there! Hey there! I’d probably suggest something like, “shift forward slightly as you… “Or “root through your inner hands and keep your collar bones broad as you…” 😃

    I personally disagree with this, not adhering to 90 degree led me to poor form which resulted in tennis elbow issue. When I fixed my form, my elbows feel much better.

      This works for me better, too, Rachel. The 90 degrees always bothered my wrists and shoulders. Once I backed it on up 😂 and didn’t come as far forward with my chest, it felt much better and helped me get aligned better in upward dog. ✅
