I really wanted a Probe for ages and, when I could afford it, I finally bought one (second hand obvs). Had it for about 5 years and absolutely loved it. Should have kept it really. Oh well, memories...
Vauxhall Vectra, Corado, Celica, all now forgotten. Probe: ridiculed and underated. Yes it has its faults but there are no classics without faults. But, it is a classic and no one can deny it.

Go the Probe GT! Great handling car, awesome gear box, stock fat Michelin P Zero’s that struggled to grip with the acceleration off the mark. The seats were hugging and gave that sports feel when cornering.
I had a 1994 24v Probe, I had endless problems that cost me a fortune. That said, it was nice to drive, and cornered well. He is probably right about the ride though, long journeys were exhausting. But the best thing was that V6 engine which was so silky smooth and free revving.
The Probe still is a handsome car, a cousin of mine had one. black GT with a manual transmission. I thought it was the coolest thing back then. He eventually sold it and jump into a 1998 Mustang GT convertble. That car was also a beauty, it was lowered and had the gray 17 inch wheels with black interior that made the car look so awesome. His last cool car was a 2001 Trans AM WS6, SLP exhaust and a kick ass sound system. That car was badass, it had so much torque and it sounded mean as hell. Recently he fixed his 1967 Mustang Fastback. it took him 12 years, a Coyote 5.0 liter V8 seats under the hood of that puppy. The same engine in my 2011 Mustang GT. growing up around cool cars is why I love cars today.
@@SofaKingQuick My cousin's love for cars is why I have a 2011 Mustang 5.0, a 2004 Mustang GT, 2007 ZX6R and a 2020 Indian Scout Bobber Twenty. I'll be buying a GT350 in a couple of months. I create my own dreams but also appreciate the influence that I had from older cousins growing up. I am 33 by the way, not a kid and you can see my cars on my youtube channel. I had a 1993 probe GT with wing delete and side bumper delete.. 240k on the original clutch. Started blowing distributors so she went in the salvage yard. Still a better looking car than most even today
My dad had a black Probe and it really was the best car he’d ever owned. In fact i got him to take me to my school prom in it just for the sheer appeal. But the only drawback he found was he felt the styling on the outside was half-done. It was pretty, but it felt like the ‘default’ car you get in a game where you have to add more style and appeal to it. He described it as ‘lovely to be in, nice to look at.’ which says it all.
One of my friends had one when we were teenagers, it was a neat car. I wish Ford and GM had found better success with their more different and interesting cars.
If only this car was given a better name....they could've called it the Comet and done a cheesy rebadge and that would've helped so much in this cars meme like reputation all because they called it a stinkin PrObE. I still want another one.
that currently the ford probe is really underestimated, within 10 years we will realize that this car is now very rare and its price is likely to rise sharply, friends who love the probe buy now while prices are low ! , I'm willing to bet that its value will increase
I loved mine a 1995 2.5 V6 in Blue, had it stolen, police found it in perfect condition about 6 weeks later, insurance had paid out by that time, I lost my no claims and they wanted to sell it back to me for pretty much what they paid me for it, told them no, hope it went to a new owner before the scrapyard in the sky, N304 AAR i think from memory.
Had the same as that blue one, was a great Tourer, 2 years old and sold it at 4 years old, they should have tuned the engine quicker, if RWD it would have been a winner
That's correct. Because of the complaints about it being FWD and not having a V8, Ford decided to sell it as the Probe and dress up the Fox body at the last minute. That's why the 1994-2004 Mustang chassis is nearly the same as the 79-93. They only had time and money to make visual changes after the Probe debacle.
I rather liked the Probe (apart from the silly name - what were they thinking!) Still rather have a Calibra though as they are very pretty cars, reasonably quick and cheap to fix with MK3 Cavalier bits. Shame that just like the Cav, finding one that isn't rotten is a challenge. It wasn't until the late 90s that car makers really cracked decent rustproofing.
Why has Clarkson always given so much importance to top speed. Most people who buy these cars or any other car don't come close to it anyway, except maybe in Germany. Top speed is the last thing I ask about in any car I buy
Man the ford probe is cool but not take over the mustang cool. I personally love the foxbody platform until the end of the sn-95 because of the looks but the performance sucks when tested by time. 1969 fastback mustang is almost my favorite car being behind the 1972 split bumper Camaro and 1969 dodge Daytona.
Wasn't a bad looking car... but performance was no better than a v6 mondeo ( which it was based on ) ... no WAY would it hit 60 in 7 seconds like the video says the corrado is the one I would have then and now ;)
Wrong, it´s basically a Mazda 626 base, basically it is a complete Mazda wich makes it surpringly cheap in maintenance if you find a mechanic who can divert from the Ford logo. The tuning possibilitis are only limited by the cranked up space in the motor departement and the heat.
Ahhh my bad it is based on the 626 ! the duratec v6 is a decent engine but the only way to get serious power from it is to turbo it, yes you can use bits and and bats from the mondeo st200 lump but even with them it still will not hit 60 in 7 seconds... im not knocking it I like fords had a few fast fords myself shame the probe never really took off :)
Geeteebloke The 626/MX-6/Probe platform cars were no exception to any other 6 or 4 cylinder car in that boost is needed to make serious power. However, the probe was a good performing car at a competitive price point. The probe unfortunately never got the JDM spec MX-6 KL-ZE engine. Instead it got the KL-DE which only had 164 hp. While not a bad figure for a 2.5 liter V6 at the time, the KL-ZE made 200 hp. It would have helped the probe surely compete with the competition and it is very common for people to swap in the KL-ZE.
That VW Corrado with such a massive flop here in the US because of its dated styling and Amazingly badd reliability. VW dealers Would have to year old models on their lot that they couldn't sell even with massive discounts. They didn't get anything from auction either so after while the VW dealers just stopped ordering them. If they did order any it was because Volkswagen would threaten to cut back their shipments of gulfs and VW jetta

Ford Probe - a great car! I've got the same model, built 1995. 21years old now but still in good shape and well polished.
I'm proud to have it. :-)
Thank god it´s more a Mazda than a Ford. I´m having a lot of fun with mine and the design is still an absolute eyecatcher. Cheers!
