Ruger steel is actually harder and stronger than colts. Most colts will not handle the loads I run through my Rugers. That's what gives Ruger the edge over colt and SandW is their capability to handle max loads.
You can’t make the assumption that every forging is stronger than any type of casting. Ruger pioneered using the investment casting process for firearms parts. Not even for a moment have I thought “gee my Ruger Red Label shotgun receiver is cast so it might blow up on this shot.” The best process also depends on the part and it’s function. You can’t really cast spring steel, so no cast 1911 extractors for me. (That part functions as a spring.) And don’t confuse the investment casting Ruger uses for receivers with metal injection molding - which is a form of casting… sort of. There are a LOT of MIM parts in the new Colts.
3" GP100 was my first carry gun, also bought back in the late 90's during the AWB. Still love it. I do want the Colt also though. Mostly since I'll never justify paying for a python.
The Ruger is better known and has a continuous history. The Colt is basically a new company since they don’t have anyone who knows how to build their guns from way back. I’m an S&W guy myself, except for single action, (then it’s Ruger all day long). The Colt is way prettier, but I’d rather have the Ruger even though I absolutely dislike the extra weight and the ugly grips. That’s why everyone always does an undercut on a Glock frame when they have it stippled; it should carry over to anything else that’s beating on that knuckle too.
I like the weight of the gp100, I like the finish of the King Cobra and the trigger feels marginally better in my opinion. Neither feels as good as a S&W 686/586 overall but Colt makes a very nice looking gun.
Actually got me thinking: I have a Smith 36-1 Square butt 22 oz. With Underwood hard cast SWC Keith load 158 grains at 1100 FPS, that should be more than enough for barriers, large mammals etc. That's one more gun I don't need to buy then!

Ruger hands down.....i put a 10 pound TRS in mine and a 10 pound HS.....action is smooth from the factory.....combined with the springs....its fantastic now....mine is the 3 inch fixed sight....
I have purchased the new editions of both in the last month but the 7 shot GP100, when I broke down and paid for a FOID card in IL, I love both of them equally kinda like my children , great video
OTOH the SP101 4 inch has great sights, weighs less, has less/no sharp edges. Might be more aftermarket possibly. Also costs less. One less round, trigger probably not as good but.....
I own one Anand have shot both. The frame on the GP is MUCH bigger than the Colt. The Colt feels much more like an old K frame. If you actually wanted to carry one of these, the Colt would be much easier.
The GP100 is great except for the ugly flat area above the grip. I wish the line from the grip to the hammer flowed more directly instead of the abrupt sideways cut. I have a Gp100 and a 686, both fine guns.
This is an unfair comparison due to the fact that Colt is offering a pseudo King Cobra. It is really just a bedded up d frame revolver, marginally acceptable for 357. The old King Cobra was more of an L frame S&W, Ruger GP Ruger size. Colt should have offered the King Cobra with a Diamondback barrel as 38 plus p , and scaled up the frame into a Python mid frame revolver.
Seems to me that Colt is taking their time getting back into making these revolvers and starting with the simplest designs. One can hope we will have a modern version of a python in a few years...
Ruger all day. Tougher and stronger. Plus while Colts are beautiful and I’d love to have one....they are over priced and you just pay for the name. It’s not like the materials they use are made of wolverines claws lol. I’ll take the one that’s built strong and affordable. If I can use stock sights and hit a paper plate at 100 yards, I’m happy.
I've owned 2 different GP100s and still own one of them - a Match Champion in .357. I also own two SP101s. They are great, rugged working guns. But the King Cobra I just bought (3" version) is definitely a cut above any Ruger I've owned in every regard. Much higher quality fit and finish, and the smoothest, best trigger I've ever felt on a production wheelgun out-of-the-box. Trust me - you're not just 'paying for a name' with the new Colts. I think the additional price is very much worth it in my experience, but whether those details are worth for anyone else, over the typical good and solid Ruger, is up to them to decide.
Not tougher or stronger . Cast iron is a cheap weaker form that’s why ruger has to make the gun so big . Forged is rock solid and 40 percent stronger . Don’t go by weight and size and think because it’s beefier it justifies it being stronger or more robust .

King Cobra was never designed for steady .357 magnum use. King Cobra is more closely akin to SW 66 which like the King Cobra is an intermediate or mid-size frame. King Cobra and SW 66 are both a slight step up from their little brothers Colt Cobra and SW J-Frame respectively which are designed for .38 Special. A better comparison of true .357 magnum revolvers: Colt Python vs SW 686 vs Ruger GP100. Any true gun enthusiast would have all 3 in their collection. Each has is own specifications and design that make them unique. There is no BEST one. However, Colt Python aesthetics are truly extra-ordinary, vented ribbed barrel. SW 686 has its own thing going with high refinement and simple lines. Ruger GP100 is the blue collar champ and rightfully earns the moniker Built Like a Tank. Get all 3 then you won't be disappointed !
I agree! I'm a fan of guns and not a brand snob! I own S&W 686 plus and a Ruger GP100 and a S&W 60 and love all of them. I would love to get a Colt down the line.
When you compare in your hands the King Cobra and the Python, both are 6 shot 357 mag revolvers. However, the King Cobra is a much more dainty revolver. Smaller frame, smaller cylinder, smaller diameter barrel. While the King Cobra is chambered in 357 Mag, I would not recommend a steady diet of 357. The Python on the other hand looks like in can digest a steady 357 Mag diet with no problem. With the King Cobra, I shoot 38 spcl most of the time and save 357 Mag for when I truly need the extra power.
@@dougr5379 However Nutn or some other reviewer pointed out that the new KC is 30% beefier compared to the original. Also it's forged not cast so ounce per ounce should be about as strong as the GP100.
After shooting both, I shot the King Cobra better so that is what I got. I have a Ruger Redhawk in .44 Magnum though that I adore. Ruger makes excellent guns.
That's the great thing, there's plenty of stuff out there that we can choose what we like/shoot best. I like both of these but the Ruger to me is much more comfortable to shoot. But they're both dead sexy.
you don’t want to dry fire empty with a revolver from what I’ve been told from gun retailers, as it damages the primer strike pin both internal and external and you should get some snap cap bullets to practice dry firing on so you don’t damage the firing pin hammer.
These are transfer bar guns. Not a problem. In fact dry fire scan smooth out the gun and is actually VERY good for your gun as long as you keep it under 20,000 per year for the next 50 years. (Bit of exaggeration but is you never live fire you could probably still have a functioning gun after that kind of use, albeit a bit loose and possibly badly timed).
It would be a mos just comparative between a Ruger GP-100 and an old Colt King Cobra from de 90s, they were more similar in Size. The New King Cobra is more comparable with a Ruger SP-101.
@@OBNXS1 Do you mean larger in the barrel?, because larger in the frame I don´t think so. The New King Cobra has a frame similar in size to the Detective Special. The old King Cobra (the 90s King Cobra) had a frame similar in size to L frame S&W and Colt Python I frame.
I think the GP100 is better of the two in this video. Once you get into Pythons or Anacondas (yes I know it’s a 44) they’re a bit better and the 80’s 90’s versions are the best up there with my S&W 686 (pre dash/ locks)
The Colt look much better and slimmer. Ruger is more like a L frame or even a bit more while the Colt like a K frame. Ruger just recently came up with 7 shot GP 100 in 357. Would be interesting if the King Kobra is even smaller than a S&W 19/66!
Gieszkanne the Ruger is definitely beefier but they’re both L frame territory. There isn’t a whole lot of play with the Colt in a Ruger holster. I’m going to range day for SHOT Show so hopefully they’ll have the Python and King Cobra there for a side by side. They’ll definitely have them at SHOT on Tuesday though.
@@OBNXS1 There isnt that much difference from K to L. When I see the cylinder of the Cobra at 3:59 I can see the difference. There is no space for a 7th shot. the cylinder is slimmer it looks tight like a K frame cylinder and if the cylinder is smaller the frame also is. The Corbra is just beefier on the top. I once shot an 70ies Python and 70ies S&W 27. The mechanic is like butter. The Python is build like tank. You will see the difference if you get the opportunity to compare them side by side. I have seen two videos one where somone compared it to an old King Cobra and you can see that the old is bigger. In another somone compared the new 2 inch King Cobra 6 shot with the 5 shot SP101 and its only slightly bigger.
@@OBNXS1 Hickock45 has allready a video where he showed a King Cobra next to a SW 65. And he said that ist a bit smaller and lighter. I also just read it in a forum where somone even measured the cylinder of a K frame and KC. I think its great and a good idea from colt. They also made the Python again and if you want something bigger you can go with it.
Unless you think your Wild Bill Hickok walkin around Dodge City with a big ass heavy revolver I dont see the GP 100 being any use besides hunting or target shooting. I had the Match Champion for awhile and I liked it but it didnt serve any purpose for me.

That was a true statement when the firing pin was on the hammer.
It’s a good deal larger than a SP101
@@OBNXS1 Do you mean larger in the barrel?, because larger in the frame I don´t think so. The New King Cobra has a frame similar in size to the Detective Special.
The old King Cobra (the 90s King Cobra) had a frame similar in size to L frame S&W and Colt Python I frame.
I mean overall. The SP101 is pretty small.
The colt tigger pull is much better.
I think the GP100 is better of the two in this video. Once you get into Pythons or Anacondas (yes I know it’s a 44) they’re a bit better and the 80’s 90’s versions are the best up there with my S&W 686 (pre dash/ locks)
The GP100 is a gun everyone should own.
I have a 3" SP101 and a 686 Plus Deluxe. I'm planning videos with both of those and the Colt but it probably won't be until after SHOT Show.
👍
I like both but the Ruger looks unrefined and crude next to the colt.
I've always liked the look of the Ruger. I don't like revolvers without a full underlug though.
I heard that the new Colts (king Cobra) are not forged but it’s casted!!!
Where did you hear that?
Ruger GP100 FTW!
Grips are pretty but,,,,,,,,, painful on the middle finger. Surprised they haven’t corrected this .
Agreed, it needs a better undercut on them. They beat my knuckle worse than Glock.
I am planning to lightly modify with a Dremel bit. Every little bit will help . I will post after I do it.
I would think you’d need to do the frame as well as grips. The trigger guard is what’s biting me.
I want both.
iron monkey solid choice. 🤣
Ruger all day long....
I've loved my GP100 since day 1.
@@OBNXS1 I have a 3 inch fixed sight gp100 357 and 2 ,2.25 inch barrel sp101.....a 357 and a 38 special only.love them all...
Should've done a comparison between the Ruger SP101 in .357 Magnum and the Colt King Cobra Target. Would've been a more apples to apples comparison.
The SP101 is WAY smaller than the Colt, though I may do that video yet. My SP101 is 3" though.
No not really..
correction super blackhawk
I just bought a gp100 match champion...
Nice!
I did too, but traded it since it was just ho-hum on accuracy.
COLT is better. I own both.
Ruger cast frame is not as strong as a colt forged frame
Debatable without testing to destruction.
No it's a fact jack
The Colt sooner or later will have timing issues. Never had that happen with Ruger GP 100.
It’s a new production, I’d be surprised if it suffers the same faults as the older ones
Not even a comparison. That colt king cobra takes 1st place
It’s always a comparison, plenty of people think the Ruger is better.
@@OBNXS1 well those people dont know what they talk about. 🤣 kidding.
@@OBNXS1 rugers are very reliable and strong but most of them are ugly looking to me. Esp the 357's some of there 44 mags are beautiful
Ruger is boss!!!
This GP100 will always hold a special place in my heart. It was my first BBQ gun.
I found a clue ! blues clues blues clues !
A colt 4:31 is still a Colt and a ruger is still just a ruger.
Unless you think your Wild Bill Hickok walkin around Dodge City with a big ass heavy revolver I dont see the GP 100 being any use besides hunting or target shooting. I had the Match Champion for awhile and I liked it but it didnt serve any purpose for me.
Hate to break it to you ruger fanboyz but the only reason its "beefier " is beacuse its made of cast. Not stronger than a colt
Well there’s Ruger only loads so...
The Ruger is not even in the same league as the Colt.
Correct. The Ruger is way heavier duty and much cheaper.
The Colt is a wee bit over priced for what you get. Smart money is on the Ruger.
"Beefier"

I might sell my king cobra..
