London Calling is an iconic album,,,,in it's entirety. An absolute piece of music history,,,,even if you're not a big Clash fan,,,,it reflects a time in history.
It’s such a classic album that I can’t even imagine it being a single LP. Sure some songs are better than others, but you can say that about virtually ever album.
Abso-fucking-lutely - it is amazing. The second verse alone makes it amazing: N Every gimmick hungry yob digging gold from rock n roll Grabs the mike and tell us he'll die before he sold But I believe in this and it's been tested by research He who fucks nuns will later join the church
That little blues lick solo bit in the intro of the song has inspired me to start exploring adding little lead lines into my rhythm playing, so I have Mick Jones to thank for that.
I'm sorry but I must disagree with "The Vinyl Geek" on side 3 of this classic album. Side 3 is the 2nd best side on the album. "Death Or Glory" is one of my favorite songs of all time!
Most if not all of my favorite Clash songs are on this album including my all-time favorite by them, Train in Vain. To me, it very much feels like a greatest hits album in disguise
Can we take a minute to realise that side 3 has 'Death or Glory' Which has one of my favourite lines in any song 'But I believe in this and it's been tested by research He who fucks nuns will later join the church'
This album is just so great, maybe one of my all time favorites. I got this on CD in Japan, over ten years ago, and listened the hell out of it in a CD Walkman, every track was like magic to me, especially the ska and reggae influences, which were pretty new to me back then. I finally got it on vinyl last year, as a birthday present from my sister. As I had lost my CD copy, it was the return of an old friend. The details I get on my different setups brought a lot more light on it too. It really feels like a rowdy album, even their disco-ish tracks. Great stuff from beginning to end.
I've only heard this album once and I admit that I had an aprehension because of the reputation of punk rock... I accidentally heard it thinking it was the song London Calling but I ended up listening to the whole album... I was very surprised in a very good way! I really liked this diversity of sound in it. Let's listen to it a second time :)
One of my favorite albums of all time I believe it’s #7 on the Rolling Stone top 500 albums which is crazy I just picked the latest pressing the 2014 180 Gram remaster!
Good review! I never knew much about the Clash, only heard they're two songs: "London Calling" and "Train In Vain" Might be work checking out the album!
Honestly I'm too attached to this record to hear criticism, I felt my heart rate go up. Every track I would give a ten (Even Koka Kola, even Lost in the Supermarket, even Four Horsemen). Every song has at one time been my favourite on the album (Revolution Rock is currently at the top, next to Hateful).
"The Only Band That Matters" That statement always gave me a laugh, but I think The Clash totally pull it off. They're so much more than just a punk band, and this album is a perfect example. It's tough to say whether I prefer this or Combat Rock as my favorite Clash album because both are loaded with classic tracks. It's been a while since I've listened to London Calling all the way through, but now I have to give it a play after watching this. Such a great album.
BEST REVIEWER EVER. Congratulations and Very Thank You, Mister Eric Callero. I Downloaded this Video and Recorded It in my DVD collection. This is HISTORY.
Hello, great double album, one of the best ever made. Clampdown, Guns of Brixton, Wrong 'em Boyo, Death or Glory, Brand New Cadilac, Jimmie Jazz, Rudie Can't Fail, The Right Profile, and the fantastic B-side to London Calling... Armagideon Time, all great songs not even mentioned in the review. So many different styles and emotions, just a fantastic double album.
YES YOU MENTIONED MY FAVS, IM NOT DOWN IS SO GREAT WHENEVER IM UPSET I LISTEN TO IT. & SPANISH BOMBS JUST MAKES MY HEART FLUTTER...THE GUITAR IN LONDON CALLING IS PURE ART
I'm in my early 50's and yes, it was an album that had to "grow on me" over the years. Honestly, considering how much I love this classic album, I really didn't like it all as a whole for many years. (Weird, I know, right??) For many years I considered the album to have one great song per side and that was that. These songs were "London Calling" side 1, "Clampdown" side 2, "Death Or Glory" side 3 and of course "Train In Vain (Stand By Me) side 4. While, for me, these are still the best songs on the album, I wouldn't have "The Clash-London Calling" any other way!
This is easily one of my favourite albums. It's one of the only double albums I've listened to without any weak tracks, and it doesn't get boring despite its length. So no, I don't think it should have been a single album :)
The album is a classic that moves through musical styles. Train in Vain was the birth of Mick Jones as a lyricist and Big Audio Dynamite. Great summary had to be a double album ✌️🤘🇦🇺
Just found you today and love your format! Honest, unpretentious and meaningful reviews. I discovered you by way of researching Tears For Fears, The Hurting -- and really liked your sit down with Jamar Rogers (who I had never heard of). I must say I like your interview format better, but you do a great job with solo reviews as well. Just subscribed.
+Don Knox Thank you. I enjoy doing the interviews more as well, and to be honest, it's less work for me haha. I have more coming up, so stay tuned for that. Thanks for your kind words!
you are partially right, side 1 and 2 are crazy stone cold classics, side 3 and 4 are a step down, but just barely. Record two is solid with great music, but can't quite compete with record one. Side 3 has Boyo, Koka Kola which are both good, and Death or Glory is one of the great Clash tracks of all time.
The album is perfect the way it was produced The punk genre mixed in with others, never sounded better. The lyrics scream at you, even if there were no music. I like your informative and entertaining review, but only wish you had spent more time in each track, as there is no weak track on the two discs. Like I said, it was perfect. One of Rock history’s classic double LP’s.
I love this record, one of my favourite Clash records. I have distinct memories of hearing lots of these songs during the summer growing up because the Clash were played on the radio here in London a lot back in the 80's. So this record just makes me think of hot indian summers, water fights, and BBQ's. And talking about lot of songs to take in, Sandanista! (their 4th record) is 36 songs on 4LP's
Jason Fisk Vinyl Rewind I grew up in a small town that didn't have access to The Clash until I suppose Combat Rock and to me The Clash were pretty much only "Should I Stay or Should I Go" and "Rock the Casbah." But, a friend of mine lent me a 90 minute cassette that was a dub of as much of Sandinista! as would fit. She got it from a guy who was probably five years older than we were and had a pretty epic record collection. That tape completely changed how I thought of The Clash, and it seemed like a kind of "underground" find that not a lot of people knew about. To me Sandinista! is still my favorite Clash album even with all of the oddball tracks on it-- the really heavy dub reworkings and the children singing and backwards tape. It's almost a Sgt. Pepper's in the catalog of The Clash. I really think that songs like "The Magnificent Seven," "Police on My Back," "Charlie Don't Surf, "Somebody Got Murdered," and my personal favorite "Midnight Log."
Jason Fisk Yes, Sandanista, I have yet to dive into that monster. I watched an interview when the surviving members all kind of looked at each when asked about that album. They were like yeah, it's a little long but that's where we were at the time. Man, we need more Clash on the radio. thanks for watching
Mike Roeder ah very cool to hear. I've heard mixed reviews on Sandanista but yet to really listen to it myself. I really like how you discovered the album. Definitely a relic of a bygone era.
I really can't pick my favourite out of all the songs in the album, but my fav would be among Koka Kola, Rudie Can't Fail, Clampdown and Revolution Rock
Nice review. I have the 180 gram re-issue of London Calling, and I think they did an excellent job on it. It sounds fantastic, they boxed the cover a bit, to give both LP's more room inside, and it's on a white Epic label that resembles a promo copy a bit. One of my favorite tracks that you didn't mention is their rockabilly cover of Ronnie Hawkin's Brand New Cadillac. It's a toss up between this and the American version of their first album for my Clash favorite. Keep the videos coming and take care...
Tim Allen Ah sweet, that's good to hear they gave those records some more room. It sounds like those labels are mimicking the UK pressing www.discogs.com/Clash-London-Calling/release/470912 Yes, I could (maybe should have) mentioned it. It's a great follow up track to London Calling, pulls an almost 180 on the listener. Check out this article on The Clash's debut www.stereogum.com/1808903/read-an-epic-records-execs-1977-letter-to-a-fan-explaining-why-he-passed-on-the-clash/news/ thanks for watching
Lesser songs? Side three not good enough? No mention of "The Guns of Brixton"... Please don't review Sandinista, you wouldn't get it either. It was heavily criticized then, still tragically underrated today. Cheers
No shit. This album has maybe two "meh" songs and that's only on a bad day. Every song is incredible. I must admit "Lost in the Supermarket" is phenomenal. Not including "Rudy Can't Fail" clearly shows, he doesn't get it. The song embodies everything, The Clash was. Sandinista? That album blew me away. Probably too political for most people, though.
SANDINISTA WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY ahead of its time !!!!!!!!!! It's too FANTASTICALLY LEGENDARY !!!!!!! The module of mechanical efficient engineering
Here's the deal, I personally think that nothing would be better as a single LP that was a double/triple LP etc. The vision may seem more scattered on a double LP but in the end you really just have more material from the band. Even if it's filler and stuff it's still _more_ that you get for your buck, so to speak.
London Calling earns all of its vinyl. Even the so called weakest side, side 3, contains 2 songs that most Clash fans deem indispensable in the band's catalog, Death or Glory and The Card Cheat.
Oh good grief. "Hateful" is polarizing? I said once - and I'll always believe it. Many (not all) people who didn't experience the 77-81 punk movement, don't know WTF they're talking about. Purchased when first released, and it has gotten better with every listen. EVERY song is raw, truthful, poignant, and artistically perfect.
I don't have to "imagine" when the song "London Calling" was new because I bought the "Train In Vain (Stand By Me) 45 single with "London Calling" on the flip-side way back in January 1980 and was floored by both sides!! It was fucking amazing!!!
You got a new subscriber! Just a little comment. I think it should be a must at least to quickly mention the huge influence black music had on their discography: reggae (Revolution Rock, Guns of Brixton), early street hip hop (Magnificent Seven, This is Radio Clash), ska (Wrong’em Boyo), funk (Overpowered By Funk).
My favorites on this album: London Calling Rudie Can't Fail Spanish Bombs Death or Glory The Card Cheat Train In Vain/Stand by Me I don't care for Lost in the Supermarket (Yeah, I said it) and Revolution Rock.
Great review for one of my favorite albums! You should eventually get around to making a video just showing some of your favorite albums. I'm always curious to see what people have on their list.
BEYOND AWESOME FILMS Thank you! That'd be cool. I did make this video awhile back ruclips.net/video/EtCCPBuzd6I/видео.html granted I own more of my favorites on vinyl, but it will give you a taste.
I’m glad it’s a double. No tracks on here I skip. Train in Vain and Spanish Bombs near the top of my favourites on here. Guns of Brixton one of my all time most loved songs.
Honestly, this is the only double album that is perfect to me. Exile On Main St is close behind but is brought down by some tracks on the tail end. But for me, London Calling is 65 minutes of pure perfection.
The reason I like vinyl so much is it forces you to listen to the lp the way the artist wanted warts and all, it's easy to stick on a CD and skip tracks you don't like with the press of a button, records like this and the clash Sandinista and the Beatles white lp should be enjoyed start to finish with the good the bad and the ugly tunes.
Remarkable record and the original UK Tim Young (timtom) cut lacquers produced amazing quality pressings - imho worth the $ 100 investment for a nm copy - you will not regret. Big full house shaking bass and crisp clear vocals that fill the room, zero harshness; can be turned WAY up like these songs deserved to be without fatiguing the ears.
Excellent video reviews on some of the best vinyl out there. I would love to hear your opinion on albums like Stevie Wonder's Songs in The Key Of Life and Marvin Gaye's What's Going On.
First band I ever saw live in 77. We were fanatical fans of the Clash, still are. Best live band on the planet. Theres no footage available that captures how electrifying the clash were live. You sir need to own a copy of white man in hammersmith Palais/the prisoner preferably with the green cover as every single released was just as important as the albums. They were major events on their own at the time. Guy pored the wine in to the piano not on the keys. It was the finest piano in London at the time!
Love this album...esp 'Rudie can't fail'...'Jimmy Jazz' and the fantastic 'Right Profile'. I was as you, in dismissing side 3 of the album, until I also bought the CD and started playing it in the car...have to say i love those tracks now and what is side 3 of the vinyl version is now my favourite side by far.
Thx to remember to the audience that punk wasn't about certains style of music ! I totally agree. that's something lot's of boring 2/3 chords typical punk band forgot. Doing what you want it's a good start if you got talent that's even better. the Clash had talentS and their albums take age very very well
This is an album that has been on my wish list since 2001. I always loved the song 'London Calling', and I heard of 'Train In Vain' because Garbage sampled the song back in 1994 on their hit song, Stupid Girl. I love the idea of double-albums, I tend to enjoy them alot. I always thought both George Harrison and Ringo Starr were idiots to say that The Beatles would've been better if it had been a single album, I disagree. My first album was released as a Double-Album, love giving people more songs to enjoy.
Paulina Angel Wow, I totally forgot Garbage sampled Train in Vain. I haven't listened to that song in ages, it sounds so different to me now. Double albums are great and I agree with you on The White Album. I can't imagine what they would cut out to make it a single album. I also understand where they are coming from: say more with less.
Spanish Bombs and Lost In the Supermarket are EASILY two of the Clash's best tracks.
I never liked the Clash very much. I'm more of a Misfits and Black Flag kinda guy.
Giant Squid oooo I love the Clash. But Misfits and Black flag are good too
I've always wanted to like Black Flag, but I just don't. However, the Misfits are great
theneedledrop Without a doubt
Hey Anthony, never knew you liked the clash.
London Calling is an iconic album,,,,in it's entirety. An absolute piece of music history,,,,even if you're not a big Clash fan,,,,it reflects a time in history.
Side 3 has no highlights? The Card Cheat is phenomenal!
One of the very best on the album in my opinion!
Wrong em fucking boyo
Chirag Singhvi, yup, my second favorite song on the album.
It’s such a classic album that I can’t even imagine it being a single LP. Sure some songs are better than others, but you can say that about virtually ever album.
yes i agree its an epic song,,,,,
Side 3 - Death or Glory?
The Keeping It Real Network right!?
Abso-fucking-lutely - it is amazing. The second verse alone makes it amazing:
N Every gimmick hungry yob digging gold from rock n roll
Grabs the mike and tell us he'll die before he sold
But I believe in this and it's been tested by research
He who fucks nuns will later join the church
That little blues lick solo bit in the intro of the song has inspired me to start exploring adding little lead lines into my rhythm playing, so I have Mick Jones to thank for that.
Side 3???? How is there a side 3????
JUST ANOTHER STORYYY
"The Guns of Brixton" man
You can crush us
you can bruise us
yes, even shoot us
but oooooh, the guns of Brixton
Best track
I'm sorry but I must disagree with "The Vinyl Geek" on side 3 of this classic album. Side 3 is the 2nd best side on the album. "Death Or Glory" is one of my favorite songs of all time!
Most if not all of my favorite Clash songs are on this album including my all-time favorite by them, Train in Vain.
To me, it very much feels like a greatest hits album in disguise
Clampdown? Anyone?
LedFingers taking of his turban is this man a Jew ?
Coming for a clampdown!
Judge says five to ten, but I say "DOUBLE THAT AGAIN !!!!!!!!!"
Can't believe no Clampdown mention. That fact and the song make me want to headbang.
It’s ironic that London Calling was played in an adversisment for the London olympics. It’s so dark and apocolyptic.
Can we take a minute to realise that side 3 has 'Death or Glory'
Which has one of my favourite lines in any song
'But I believe in this and it's been tested by research
He who fucks nuns will later join the church'
Atom Heart Mother Suite one of the best songs ever. Epic
Joe Strummer was a genius. Greetings from Brazil
+Gab Lunmac I couldn't agree with you more.
You should do anything by The Doors
Victor Nica sweet, will do
The best album of all time. Strong words but its perfect.
Imo, probably the greatest punk rock album of all time
But the vast majority of it has nothing to do with punk. I actually can't think of any aspect that is punk.
Pink is an attitude, not a genre
Nah clash is boring

Great stuff from beginning to end.
Mario Morales Glad you were able to get it again, and on vinyl no less!
So a discman..? Or did you put the cd in a Walkman
I've only heard this album once and I admit that I had an aprehension because of the reputation of punk rock... I accidentally heard it thinking it was the song London Calling but I ended up listening to the whole album... I was very surprised in a very good way! I really liked this diversity of sound in it.

My old works colleague mum dated Joe. Not a punk/ska fan but will give a listen!
It is good to see I'm Not Down getting recognised - it is one of my favourites.
My favorites on this album:
London Calling
Rudie Can't Fail
Spanish Bombs
Death or Glory
The Card Cheat
Train In Vain/Stand by Me
I don't care for Lost in the Supermarket (Yeah, I said it) and Revolution Rock.
Agreed. Imo I'm not a big fan of Spanish Bombs either. His Spanish is cringeworthy. Makes me wince everytime.
Apart from being a classic album, one of the things that helped sales in the UK was the fact that it was released at the same price as a single album.
Man I love your content! So great!
should review black flag damaged
It would be amazing if you could review the Kid A by Radiohead vinyl.
+Deacon Won you got it
Great review for one of my favorite albums!
Great channel, love your reviews
You should review The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators please!
great album
Also, I love The Clash and this album
Geez Louise!! What song would you leave off? A perfect lp as it is. Perfect!!!
I’m glad it’s a double. No tracks on here I skip. Train in Vain and Spanish Bombs near the top of my favourites on here. Guns of Brixton one of my all time most loved songs.
I love your set . It would be fun to have a whole time capsule house like that , expect , with modern wifi. Great Channel by the way 👍 cheers 🥃
How do you think about Clampdown, Koka Kola, and Rudie Can't Fail?
Remarkable record and the original UK Tim Young (timtom) cut lacquers produced amazing quality pressings - imho worth the $ 100 investment for a nm copy - you will not regret. Big full house shaking bass and crisp clear vocals that fill the room, zero harshness; can be turned WAY up like these songs deserved to be without fatiguing the ears.
Excellent video reviews on some of the best vinyl out there. I would love to hear your opinion on albums like Stevie Wonder's Songs in The Key Of Life and Marvin Gaye's What's Going On.
you got it
First band I ever saw live in 77.
One of the best albums ever 👍
Man have you ever listened to Badfinger's "Magic Christian Music"? I think it would be great for a review. Its got a great story and some great songs
Shakespeare no, I haven't, thanks for the suggestion!
Fax Lad Funny how an album can grow on you like that. Very cool, thank you for sharing
Nice! My dad has this album!
No standout tracks on side 3? Death or Glory and Koka Kola and their cover of Wrong Em Boyo are super rambunctious and thoughtful like the whole album
Always end up singing Lost in the Supermarket when I'm miserably pushing the trolley round, trying to get my head into the essential shop. :0)
Thx to remember to the audience that punk wasn't about certains style of music ! I totally agree. that's something lot's of boring 2/3 chords typical punk band forgot. Doing what you want it's a good start if you got talent that's even better. the Clash had talentS and their albums take age very very well
The only band that matters!
Could you review anything by Captain Beefheart please?
Petr Svoren sure thing
Guns of Brixton?
Eric...Nice to hear your view on this classic LP ....I would stick with the double LP format on this one. - VK
***** Thank you!
Agree with the fella below
Debut album from the stone roses in 1989
Legendary album and would be interesting to hear your opinion on the album
