  • William VerMeulen, Principal Horn with the Houston Symphony, coaches NYO-USA horn players Michael Stevens and Jennifer Bywaters in excerpts of two works by Strauss, the Horn Concerto No. 2 and "Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche."
Each summer, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute brings together the brightest young players from across the country to form the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. Following a two-week training residency with leading professional orchestra musicians, these remarkable teenagers not only have the opportunity to play on the famed stage of Carnegie Hall but also then embark on a tour to some of the great music capitals of the world, while serving as dynamic musical ambassadors. Someone replied that why wasn't Mr. Vermeulen wasn't in the Berlin Orchestra or somewhere (can someone say Chicago?) . I have thought the same thing. So wish I had him a teacher back in the day. I'm sure he has his reasons why he is happy making his music in Houston. His predecessor in the HSO as principal horn was Tom Bacon, an old friend of mine and also a great horn player. The HSO knows how to hire great horn players!
