I was obsessed with The Beatles when I first became a fan when I was 12. They helped me through the absolute roughest years of my life. Bullying, no friends, awkward kid who thought they had no one in the world. But The Beatles were my love and brought me so much joy. John was my favourite and I always think about that time in my life. They were such a light to me. I'm a lot older now and much, much happier. I think about them all of the time like old friends. I miss you John and George. John, you should have been able to live and enjoy life with your family and be a very old man. I'll never not be upset about the way you died. Thanks for the music and being there for me when I had no one. I'll always love every member of The Beatles.

Young Alan White is amazing on this track. Bassist Klaus Voormann credits the great drum sound to Phil Spector who "produced" this record. If you look hard enough, you will find interviews with Voormann and his recollections of the recording sessions for this song.

Every time I listen to this song, I cry emotionally.
One of the many, many things I've always loved about this song is the way it turns rockstar ego on its head. Lennon snarls "...who on earth do you think you are?/a superstar?" Could come from any self-absorbed ego-tripping rocker but Lennon has something else on his mind: "...well alright, you are." Followed of course by one of the transcendent choruses in rock music: "we all shine on/like the moon and the stars and the sun"
