I don't know anything about music. I know I like music, and I know the music I like. This song is a damn masterpiece.

I'm obsessed with Lizzy. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of a fully produced track, but I strongly recommend you check out In What World. It has some lovely progressions. And Headstones and Land Mines has really interesting subject matter. Oh and I'm partial to Same Boat. Honestly, I think there's something special and unique about all of her songs.

god, I fell in love with Lizzy McAlpine last year when she released her debut. Incredible songwriter. Her other recent single 'erase me' has been stuck in my head for weeks. Doomsday is great too tho. If I'm not mistaken the music videos to those two singles are narratively tied and the doomsday video happens after the erase me video.

Lizzy is an absolutely brilliant songwriter and vocalist and she’s teamed up with brilliant musicians and producers to create two brilliant albums. You can appreciate her voice in the acoustic versions of songs like “Ceilings” which is incredibly beautiful.

Thanks for this great breakdown. I found her new album and was instantly hooked by this opening track. I'm mostly a blues fan, so I think you nailed it that the bluesy interplay between major and minor was what hooked me, and then the way her voice and the production are so precise while still having a ton of feeling kept me invested. She has a unique sound, but it's one where you can hear bits and pieces of her influences. She clearly has a thorough knowledge of both classic and current singers and songwriters, so she's blending the best of the old with the best of the new in a way that sounds fresh and compelling.

On this new album five seconds flat I heard a lot of Billie Eilish influence in the vocals and production. On her EP When the World Stopped Moving, which is really stripped down and intimate, I heard a lot of Norah Jones influence. It's going to be really interesting to see what else she has in store.

I had never heard of her. But I have now. Like you, I'd rather teenagers didn't feel suicidal over their first break-ups, but she told her story in a remarkably powerful and convincing way. First love is intense, and overwhelming, and the loss of it is can feel catastrophic. She clearly had it big, but in time I expect she will be more than okay with not having married as a teenager. What is it like to be the subject of one of these tortured confessions? Is he a narcissist? Maybe, but lots of teenagers are: a preoccupation with self is a stage we go through as we turn into adults and try to work out who we are, what we like and where we want to go in our lives. Making relationships, experiencing sex, getting educated, living independently, living with other people, choosing a career, starting work ... it's all of plenty, without having to choose a partner, and co-producer of your babies as well. Grief is the flaw in love, that's a lesson we all have to learn at some point, preferably without killing ourselves. The person who ends a relationship rarely gets much sympathy for leaving behind a teary mess; but very often they have taken responsibility for making an appropriate and necessary decision. They are learning too, and trying to work out answers to their own questions. They made a choice that they are allowed to make; they don't need to be told that making their choice equated to killing someone. Other people often make choices we dislike, but if we value our own agency, we must also respect theirs. The heartbroken teenage girl seems to be a significant trope in contemporary pop, and those feelings are valid to explore through music and song-writing; but does her sadness make her a victim? Or the other part a villain? The answer is usually no, and we have to be careful not to demonize an individual whose story probably won't be turned into art. If she learns that her happiness and wellbeing is not entirely contingent on any man, and that she does not have to be a victim of his choices, those are valuable lessons. Making a choice can be difficult, but not as much as tolerating a situation that is unsatisfactory, especially when one is young. Learning to make mindful, honest decisions is important, and so is learning to deal with them. The lesson may be a rite of passage; but it should not be pathologized as trauma, still less homicide. That isn't healthy. It doesn't equip young people to explore relationships safely, and nor does it help the victims of abusive relationships, who do need recognition and support. That's a general feeling about these sorts of songs, rather than being specific to this one in particular. I don't know what happened, and don't particularly want to. She looks very much alive, and she told her story magnificently, with abundant musicality. On this evidence, she is an exceptional talent.

Your comment about the blues influence points out a bit of the connective tissue to John Mayer, who is a huge fan of Lizzy's and has played with her. The Billie Eilish comparison is appropriate since she also worked with Fineas on at least one song. It's obvious that her musical upbringing comes from all directions from singer/songwriter, folk, pop, musical theater and hints of country.
