West Germany won the World Cup in 1974, beating Holland 2-1 !! Meanwhile, East Germany became 1976 Olympic champions beating Poland 3-1 !! This was the finest era in World football !!

I was young when I watched that match, and I thought it was a surprise that the GDR won, having been underdogs on the eve of the match. Then, as time went by, I saw it and saw it again several times (you can find it everywhere) over the years and everything was clear. Just look at the attitude of the West Germans throughout the match and even after Sparwasser's goal. Not at all upset nor desperate or angry. It's the missed goals almost on purpose in the few opportunities created... Why is everything clear? If they hadn't lost, they would have won the group and then they would have met Holland, Brazil and Argentina in the final group: with that Netherlands (which was then beaten in the final, but in a match that I would define as strange given how it went...) but even that Brazil, I am convinced that they would have been eliminated. Instead, as runners-up, they meet Yugoslavia, Sweden and Poland... quite a difference, isn't it? That World Cup at home, the West Germans COULD NOT AND SHOULD NOT FAIL, in any way. So, what importance could it have to lose against our poor neighbors to the east, when we had a practically certain path to the final with such an easy group? For the GDR, however, beating the West was a question of political pride much more than sporting one. For Lorie, the world championship had already been a success with that victory and could have ended there too, their great feat was accomplished (in fact, in the group with Holland, Brazil and Argentina, they only achieved a draw with the Argentines and 2 defeats.. ). Therefore, a match that went down in history above all for the GDR, rather than for its real result, which instead became decisive for the West Germans. The best (and most true) thing about that match was the beautiful goal from Sparwasser, who was a great player for Magdeburg, and it was no coincidence that he had won the Cup Winners' Cup a month earlier by beating Milan.

Lo más probable es que sean parte de la "nomenklatura", o sea funcionarios del Estado y miembros del Partido que tienen privilegios como poder salir al extranjero sin problemas.
