Pulse Polio is an immunisation campaignestablished by the government of India toeliminate poliomyelitis in India by vaccinatingall children under the age of five years againstthe polio virus. The project fights polio througha large-scale, pulse vaccination programme andmonitoring for poliomyelitis cases.
History
In 1985, the Universal Immunization Programme(UIP) was launched to cover all the districts of thecountry. UIP became a part of child survival andsafe motherhood program (CSSM) in 1992 andReproductive and Child Health Program (RCH) in1997. This program led to a significant increasein coverage, up to 5%. The number of reportedcases of polio also declined from thousandsduring 1987 to 42 in 2010.

In 1995, following the Global Polio EradicationInitiative of the World Health Organization (1988),India launched Pulse Polio immunization programwith Universal Immunization Program whichaimed at 100% coverage.
The last reported cases of wild polio in Indiawere in West Bengal and Gujarat on 13 January2011.[1] On 27 March 2014, the World HealthOrganization (WHO) declared India a poliofree country, since no cases of wild polio beenreported in for five years.

The Pulse Polio Immunization (PPl) aims atcovering every individual in the country. It aspiresto reach even children in remote communitiesthrough an improved social mobilisation plan.
Not a single child should miss the immunizationand leaving no chance of polio occurrence.Cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) to bereported in time and stool specimens of them tobe collected within 14 days. Outbreak responseimmunisation (0RI) to be conducted as early aspossible.
Maintaining a high level of surveillance.Performance of good mop-up operations wherepolio has disappeared.
