This is how my Grandmother always made hers, she never bought real butter only Oleo, (margarine). But always used Crisco Shortening for her pie dough and frying her Chicken. My Grandmother was a young wife during the depression so she did things the old way which I admired, she ALWAYS used canned milk in her coffee too. She bought milk in cartons, but never broke the habit of canned milk use. Oh how I loved her. She was an angel on earth all her life. Her name was Irene. 🙏💓💓💓💓
As with EVERYTHING you do, this tutorial is absolutely, hands down...the BEST!!! I just can't thank you enough for all of your amazing recipes. My family has come very excited when it comes to Rachel Cooks with Love night; we have them often and we have never had anything that wasn't just out of this world. I know you work hard doing all of these Tutorials but please know that you have and continue to help so many people! Thanks again
My grandmother’s recipe was nearly identical to this one. She put her shortening, usually lard, in one tablespoon at a time then used the pastry cutter. When it was time for the ice water, she also did that a tablespoon at a time and continued to use the cutter until all the water was in then switched to a fork. For the holidays, I may need 15 or so crusts. Around the beginning of November, I measure out all the ingredients and put flour, salt, and shortening in a small Zip-lock bag, one bag for each crust. It then goes into the freezer. When it’s time to make pies, I remove the crusts and finish them in the food processor adding the ice water through the chute. Back into the bag and the fridge until I’m ready to roll it out. My grandmother believed the less your warm hands cam in contact with the crust, the flakier and more tender it would be. What would we have done without our grandmothers?
I 'm going to make your pie crusts.I see what I did wrong. That trick with the measuring cup for the Crisco, I have always done that with honey but never Crisco. Thank you for the wonderful tips. When I watch you, you take me back to being with my Grandmother who taught me the love of baking, canning. She died when I was 10, but she gave me so many of her basic ways of cooking. Thank you for everything.
Rachel, two yrs later and you are bigger and better than I could have imagined. Rachel I love your recipes. I have cooked things I never dreamed I would have been able to. Thank you for helping me cook out side the box.
My grandma always used shortening and had a very flaky crust most people use butter. It's not the same. Thanks for the recipe. I'm sure her's was probably the same. Im going to use this recipe. Love your recipes
I like all your recipes they are delicious, but I'm a disabled man and takes me awhile. So I bin wanting to make a chicken pot pie, and I know this pie crust is going help me out. Thanks Rachel
Genius idea for getting the shortening out. Im so addicted to your videos. Your recipes are so much like my grandmas. And very similar to my own by watching others. Because of you, I'm back to making homemade tortillas.
My mother never wanted to really share her recipe for her pie crusts. And I must admit she made outstanding pie crusts. My daughter makes her pie crusts from the recipe on the label of the Crisco can. I’ve been known to use the recipe on the Crisco can also. But I’ve also been known to buy already made pie crusts. Tomorrow I’m going to make your recipe for pie crusts. I want to be known for my outstanding pie crusts. I’ll edit this comment after I make my pie crusts in the morning.
Thank you for all your recipes. You make everything so much more peaceful to make. I'm really enjoying cooking and baking more these days. Thank you for getting me back with cooking with love.
Hi Rachel, I love your channel. I'm a Chef and I still learn many things from your videos. I just wanted to share with you a tip I saw on another channel, when making 2 pie crusts divide them into 2/3 and 1/3 that way you have a bigger piece for the bottom and smaller for the top because you need a bigger piece for the bottom because the sides angle out. Keep up the good work.

lard makes amazing pie crusts.
You are correct. My grandmother always used lard. It is definitely a cut above Crisco@@MargaretCutt-um8iq
So, you use lard INSTEAD of shortening? Ty
