Roku and Amazon have become the new cable companies. I think it's time to get an Android TV box. Every time some streaming platform announces they will have Studio Ghibli films I get excited because then I can watch Grave of the Fireflies...... every time I'm disappointed.... but Hulu has it! It just sucks that it can't be listed alongside the studio's other classics, which makes it almost forgotten.
The Criterion Channel is my favorite streaming service available (Though its failed predecessor Filmstruck will always occupy the biggest space in my heart), so thanks for giving it a shoutout! I love seeing the selection of classics on HBO Max, but it pales to what the CC offers. HBO appeals to me mainly as an animation fan but I don’t know if I can justify based on that solely. But in that spirit I’m always so excited to see a person about to take a dive into the Ghibli’s for the first time! I’m most anxious to see your takes on Mononoke and Kiki. You couldn’t have two films more different but I treasure them so. Best of luck on that journey. :)
I would recommend starting with Nausicaa, just because it’s the first one I saw back in 1985. The newer Disney bluray transfer has muted colors and not as saturated than the original Japanese though. Weird..
Thank you so much for covering everything so thoroughly! It means a lot that you’d actually take your time to compare crunchyroll vs hbo’s selection even though anime is a medium you don’t personally watch. It really helps me personally and I’m sure a lot of others feel the same way
I’m so excited you’re getting into anime, I got into it like a few months ago and I’m literally obsessed. My favorite studio Gibley is princess Mononoke, with Howells moving castle at second
Here in my country we get Studio Ghibli via Netflix. There are many International programmes and movies also available. For me most importantly Netflix has TNG. I don't know if HBO max will be made available here later but there is nothing there to excite me.
I mostly got HBO Max to catch up on Doctor who. I fell off a few years back and I'm trying to catch up without having to pay for every season individually on Prime. I also want to catch up on Cartoon network stuff and watch the Ghibli and classic movies I haven't seen. After I finish that I don't see much else that will make the price seem worth it. I hope they add more. If it really was a portal to get the entire library of the sub channels it would be more than worth the price.
6:33 Hey Dan. I noticed that the 1954 A Star Is Born is not logged on your LetterBoxD, definitely stream that, it is packed to the brim with great and memorable scenes
Wow this was a great review of the streaming service. I love how thorough you were about what's offered and what wasnt. Also the fact that you acknowledge what you arent an expert in. Great job Dan!
Contrary to Disney+, which I bummed we don't have access in my country, HBOmax is really unnecessary since HBO content is already available on other services and stuff like Ghibli studio are on Netflix. If they are planning to go to more teritorries they will have to have more compelling original content that will worth the extra cost.
Ghibli films I would recommend are Porco Rosso, Howl's Moving Castle, Whisper of the Heart + Cat Returns (sort of sequel), The Wind Rises and Spirited Away of course. Have seen all buy Yamadas and liked them all except Ponyo but the rest are good to amazing. Love to see you review them all.
Dan, have you ever watched Search Party on TBS? Some really underrated content from Michael Showalter. HBOMax picked it up for a 3rd and 4th season. TCM movies really make this worth it though
As a huge anime fan, I would only recommend Konosuba, and Princess Mononoke. There are some others definitely worth mentioning, but those are the only 2 i would recommend to non anime fans. Btw, this was a great breakdown Dan! Ive honestly gone through alot of articles around HBO max, and i feel like u did a better breakdown than all of them combined
As someone who does not watch a lot of movies, loves animation, and got in at the promo price, I think it's a good deal. At least for me personally. The classic movie selection alone is going to occupy me for a long while because I have not seen most of those movies. I do agree though that the lineups for the DC and Cartoon Network/Adult Swim channels are disappointing, or at least a work in progress. There is so much good material they could pull for both of those but just is not there right now. I assume the reason for that is some material may simply be tied up in other streaming agreements. Here's hoping we see stuff like the animated Justice League show, Batman Beyond, and Harley Quinn in the near future.
Thanks for the great overview Dan. There is one HBO Original Movie that I have always loved, called "Something The Lord Made." It contains great performances from Alan Rickman, Mos Def and Mary Stuart Masterson, among others. I looked for it as you were scrolling around the content but didn't see it near Billy Crystal's "61*" and other HBO original movies. That being said, I also didn't see The Sopranos, The Wire, Rome, Deadwood, Entourage and lots of other stuff that I would expect to be there when I did see Game of Thrones, Watchmen, Westworld and Sex And The City. Are all of their original series on HBO Max? Arli$$, Dream On, and some of those other early series were groundbreaking. I own "Something The Lord Made" on DVD so whether it's there is inconsequential to me personally, but if it is, I wondered if you would be interested in doing a re-watch and review. It's worth your time and it might be something else you can recommend to people who are getting this streaming service. Thanks for the great content and look forward to your future programming.
How have you not watched any Studio Ghibli movies before this? I see a blue ray of Totoro in the background lol. Also please do review the movies as you watched. I just started watching them myself and would love to have a reviewer to watch as I do!
Also worth mentioning is that non-HBO series don't have new episodes/ current seasons. Even with something like Doctor Who which ended season 12 back in March, they only have up to season 11. One would have thought with how much they played up a title like Rick & Morty that they would have had season 4... Or 4a ( the fall half. )
UK wise, HBO Max content is part of the latest deal with Sky for HBO content/co-productions, which runs till 2024. So you'll likely get any HBO Max exclusives on Sky Atlantic
I can't access HBO but here in the UK a lot of the well known ones, Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke etc are on Netflix, surprised it's not the same in the states
I can't wait for it to come to Latin America. In Netflix Mexico, Rurouni Kenshin season 1 is missing while in HBO Max/Crunchyroll, all the seasons are there.
I'm glad you brought up the Criterion Channel as a recommendation. I support that endorsement. It's a great, affordable, and insightful service. I hope you have a great time with Studio... Gibbly?... Gibbli?... I've seen two films and they were both great.
Spirited Away is one of my favourite movies ever!!! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts! Also, I made a little squeaky noise when I saw that copy of Casablanca behind you because I just saw it for the first time and adore it.
I got HBO Max and I agree with your overall analysis. They have a lot of content but it still seemed lackluster to me. Nothing really jumped out at me as a "Oh! I HAVE to watch that!" I'm excited to see some of my favorite movies there and a lot of classics that I haven't seen. But I'm disappointed that there are no extras or special features available. And I'd really like them to at least have trailers for their shows and movies so I know what they're about before I watch them.

HBO MAX is not on Roku unfortunately.
@KingNelo_ P4P#1 its on it now
I would recommend starting with Nausicaa, just because it’s the first one I saw back in 1985. The newer Disney bluray transfer has muted colors and not as saturated than the original Japanese though. Weird..
Im really liking how the background changes according to the subject of the video. Great video Dan
Thank you so much for covering everything so thoroughly! It means a lot that you’d actually take your time to compare crunchyroll vs hbo’s selection even though anime is a medium you don’t personally watch. It really helps me personally and I’m sure a lot of others feel the same way
This is the perfect video to share with friends and family members that aren't sure about the service. Very well done Dan, as always!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS REVIEW. I was about to pick up HBOMAX and watch all the DC stuff on my firestick. You saved me some money
Imagine getting to experience Ghibli for the first time.
I envy you Dan, Princess Mononoke is an absolute top ten movie for me.
This is a fake account right? I know it's stupid to ask, but I just gotta know
Are studio Ghibli films not available on Netflix in the US? They are in the Netherlands where I am watching the catalog
Nope, there are some anime in Netflix US, but not Ghibli.
It would be fun to see you review some studio Gibhli movies, I'm sure you're gonna love some
Contrary to Disney+, which I bummed we don't have access in my country, HBOmax is really unnecessary since HBO content is already available on other services and stuff like Ghibli studio are on Netflix.
Really good video Dan. Too the point but still in depth. Keep it up
I must have that Snape/Hans Gruber picture. Where can I get one.
I bought it from an artist at Comic-Con. I need to track down their info!
Looks a bit like 'Jim'll Paint It' but probably not.
Great breakdown, Dan, very thorough. Keep up the good work!
Dan, have you ever watched Search Party on TBS? Some really underrated content from Michael Showalter. HBOMax picked it up for a 3rd and 4th season.
TCM movies really make this worth it though
For ghibli films on the international market it's up on Netflix. Same 21 films. So VPN is your friend if you are already subscribed to Netflix.
Yes please do a Studio Ghibli series!
Thanks for breaking it down Dan. Might check it out but not rushing.
I noticed that a lot of the shows you featured here, like Loony Toons are missing episodes.
Is your Ghibli series going to be called Danime Reviews?
This is art.
Love the totoro figure on your table! Looking forward to your Studio Ghibli movies review.
That Blu Ray belongs to Mara - she’s been pushing Totoro for a long time!
If you live in Canada you can get some of the HBO Max content through HBO's partnership with CraveTv 😊
I will really like to listen to you after you watch Spirited away, Howl's moving castle or Princess Mononoke!!!!
Was waiting for you or SJU to explain this. Thanks! Now I'm thinking of at least trying it for Ghibli and other animated series.
This is one of the most useful videos I’ve seen. Thank you Dan! I love your channel
You are in for such a treat with the Studio Ghibli collection!
Thanks for the walk-through and review Dan.
