  • In 2019, I hiked 2,192 miles from Georgia to Maine on the Appalachian Trail. This is part 1/3 of the full length documentary of my thru hike.
    Background: My name is Emory Sharplin, also known as "Ten More" on the Appalachian Trail. I started in Georgia on February 28th and finished in Maine on September 19th. The trail required 471,712.6 feet (143,778 meters) of elevation gain, more than five million steps, and spanned 2,192 miles (3,527.7 km).
    Godspeed to the class of 2020, and happy hiking to all!

    Sandi and I met Emory this past September 2023 in Golden, Colorado. As a six continent world bicycle traveler, I have never met such an extraordinary, enthusiastic, astounding and dynamic lady as Emory. She exudes energy, humanity, intellect and adventure on a level that inspires all the rest of us mere mortals. Her other love of sky diving, base jumping, and other spirited sports...delights all of us to be our highest and best. We wish her abundant health, energy, friends, laughter, love and joy on her life journey. May the Great Spirit be with her on her amazing trek through life. Much love and joy to her, Sandi and Frosty Wooldridge

    The second I heard, "I told you, Billy Joe, and Lonnie that..." I knew the story would end with a bang.
    All stories with a Billy Joe must end with a bang in rural locales.

      @@hikertrashproductions6078 It was still cold in Georgia in April. Had to wait out some heavy rain and snow in Franklin on Easter. Southern Virginia brought 8 days of heavy rain also. But then I got the heat wave right in the dry part of Pennsylvania. Oof. With heat indices up near 108 degrees I was night hiking, sleeping a few, getting up early, and then napping midday. There were a few really cold nights (low 30s and windy) just before Monson but then it warmed up to nice hiking weather. Even Katahdin wasn't too bad.
      I watched your other videos and really enjoyed experiencing your hike. I'm glad you had some of the not-so-good days too as that's real. Looks like you might have missed the peak of the incredible fall colors though. The view from Abol Bridge with the trees changing was jaw dropping.

    I enjoyed all three parts but where were The Whites, Mt. Washington, the Huts, Blue Ridge Parkway and all the cheeseburgers, the thunderstorms, the most important part of hiking, The Food, and your first hiking partner? There was so much missing from the video that are very much part of the trail.

    • @hikertrashproductions6078
      @hikertrashproductions6078  3 года назад +1

      The people were the most important part. I started alone (and wouldn't have it any other way) but the people I met changed my life for the better. People are really good. The trail itself taught me what I was made of. I still look back and think, "Jesus, how did you do it?". Kiwi is back in NZ and doing great, we still keep in touch :)

      Thank you very much, and congrats on your progress so far! I hope you'll get better weather in Grayson Highlands than I had. As for that ending in Pennsylvania... I was honestly terrified they'd drive into our tents or something. Hiking the next day was miserable because we were all exhausted, but the story kept on giving for the rest of the trail. I learned the term Pennsyltucky too... so I could call it an educational experience... if I were, you know, really optimistic or a liar.

Usually most places in Tennessee would always be so friendly and lovely. Here in the Volunteer State, the people are usually friendly so I'm sorry that wasn't your experience.

    The permits for thru-hiking in Great Smoky Mountain National Park...are they obtained in advance of the thru-hike or at some site adjacent to/on the trail?

    • @hikertrashproductions6078
      @hikertrashproductions6078  4 года назад +1

      Most hikers acquire them in NC at the Nantahala Outdoor Center (the NOC). I think it was $20. Thru hikers get to skip the permit line, so don't even worry about it :)

At the very least I'll try to edit in some dates to the full length version I'm working on. I'll think about doing real time updates on the PCT too!
