- Kirill Gerstein '96 performs the original 1924 jazz band version of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," with a 25-piece ensemble that includes Berklee faculty and an eight-piece student string section.
This performance rings with excitement, spontaneity and syncopation - a true jazz feeling. I loved it.
fabulous version. fabulous performance
Loved this, best performance of this ever.
That is one of the most outstanding performances of this piece I have ever heard. Absolutely stunning. Thank you.
@9:53-10:35 - what welcome interpretative decisions! Gerstein first sets a near-stride, then leans into a "swing drag" and then subtley transitioning into a covert tango. All in 42 seconds!
Pure emotion!
That Borat-looking guy at the Banjo must have had the time of his life throughout the piece :)
I was there it was phenomenal
Great moment at 4:19 when the clarinetist takes a moment to appreciate it herself. (start at 4:05)
Really great!!1

Delicious.
Starts at 0:38 seconds!
Is that Charlie Lewis and Lin Biviano on trumpets?
Wonderful Performance! I am currently a graduate conducting student in Canada and am looking for this arrangement to conduct for my final recital and am having no luck. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you
The arrangement can be found, online, from many sources. I found dozens. The most authentic recording would be the Gershwin piano tape with Michael Tilson Thomas and the L.A Philharmonic. Very fast tempos, and the fastest recording. Get a copy of the movie "King of Jazz" to see Gershwin and Paul Whiteman play the Rhapsody in Blue. As I remember the movie version was faster than the piano roll. Have fun.
I wouldn't have picked Flava Flav for a Gershwin fan.
Tom and Jerry vibes
