The main prize of this year's Irish Symphony Championship went to County Clare!
There was a great night at the National Concert Hall in Dublin on Sunday, 2 April 2023, where eight groups of talented young musicians and singers gave high quality performances as they competed for a prize fund of €4,500. Finally, the 'Binneas' group from Co. Clare as national champion and were awarded the Gael Linn trophy and a cash prize of €2,500.
Siansa has been run by Gael Linn since 2002, with the support of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta and Irish Music Magazine, and is one of the main music and singing competitions in the country. The Symphony Championship is one of the major events of the year and it was a privilege for Gael Linn that distinguished guests were present and the 70th anniversary of the organization was celebrated.
Áine Hensey, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, did an excellent job of the presentation on the night and the station broadcast live on the radio and Molscéal streamed the concert live on Facebook (link here ) . Each group, 'Binneas', from Co. Clare; 'Early in the Morning', from Wexford; 'Gaoiseach', from Tipperary; 'Anord', from Cork; Gadgets', from Waterford; 'Armón', from Mayo; 'Saolach' from Limerick and 'Misneach', from Co. Laois put on a great show in front of the large crowd that was present.
There was fierce competition between them for the €4,500 prize fund and it fell to the renowned musicians Niamh Ní Charra, Mark Ó Ceallaigh and Declan Masterson to choose the winners of this year's competition. There was great celebration among their supporters when it was announced that 'Binneas' from Co. Clare took home the top prize. There are eight young musicians in the group - Conchúr Parry, Eimear Nic Flannchadha, Ríona Ní Éilí, Evan Ó Cualáin, Caoimhe Parry, Jeaic Ó Duilín, Abhainn MacAnna and Éimear Ní Laogharnáin. The mentor, Killian Shannon, was very proud of them!
The second place prize went back to County Mayo and €1,250 was awarded to Dara Ó Muráile, Méabh Ní Aoláin, Molly Pittendrigh, Cáit Ní Ghiolla Kenny, Aoibhín Ní Dochartáigh, Marc Ó Boligéar, DIarmuíd Ó Fuada and Tomás Ó Míolóid - members the group 'Armóin' who came from different towns in the north of Mayo. Third place went down to Limerick to Áine Ní Shíocháín, Michéal Ó Fearghaile, Louis Ó Murchú, Adam Ó Dulaíoch, Eoin Mac an Báird, Luighseach Pinsent, Liam Mac Giobúin and Lucia Ní Murchú from the 'Saolach' group and a prize of € 750 on them.
In addition to that, each musician who took part in the Championship received a commemorative prize.
While giving a warm welcome to the special guests of the night, The President, Micheál D. Ó hUigínn and his wife Sabina, Réamonn Ó Ciaráin, CEO of Gael Linn, said:
'Gael Linn is delighted that the President and his wife Sabina are among us and we are especially delighted because we all understand that he is a man of music and that he would be very fond of the music that was on the stage tonight'.
He welcomed Robert Heuston from the Irish Music Magazine, Gearóid MacDonncha, Head of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta and Pádhraic Ó Ciardha, Cathaoirleach of Gael Linn.
He gave special thanks to Gearóid Mac Donncha and the RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta team for all their work towards the Symphony Championship. This collaboration contributes greatly to the competition and Siansa would not exist if it were not for all the work that the radio does to support us. He also thanked the Gael Linn team who were present from all over the country helping to run the event.
