My own situation of becoming part of a community, was not out of any sense of responsibility. By nature, I tend to be introverted; l always thought of myself as insignificant, unnoticed by those around me and a 'wallflower at family social gatherings. My introduction to community occurred very subtly, from going out to just watch my wife play netball; then approached to score for her team, eventually giving and being asked for advice on game play. Was asked to umpire training sessions, then thrown in the deep end to umpire a regular match; overtime, enjoying this, I eventually got into coaching. Became a member of club and Association committees, which lasted over 30 years; even though we never had children of our own, I settling into coaching and umpiring children. Seeing my approach and encouragement bringing achievement and joy to them, gave my a feeling of appreciation and recognition; no money in the world could have bought that sense of pride.

I’m not too sure it’s about being “thrown in the deep end”. It’s more about “Don’t be a bludger”. Stop gawking. Stop “Twiddling your thumbs”. We’re here for a reason. Get the job done. We’re not here to fuck spiders. We’re here to support a charity, then we’re going to the beach (or the pub). Don’t take it personally. No one particularly cares that you did a shit job, they just care that you “showed up”, and “had a go”. Many hands make light work. Good on ya mate.

We waited for the tow truck driver to come from just outside the town where we live. Even though we found out later that our car 🚗 was totalled, he managed to get it back on the road and onto his truck. My cousin recognised him as an old high school classmate, and they had a nice chat. Our friends have a border who let us into their house so we could spend the night. My cousin's husband picked up some pizzas, and then we hung out for a while. The next morning, my cousin turned up in their car with their belongings and drove us to Townsville. With her husband in the truck. A few days later, they drove us home. Picking up the cat on the way.

With the gun culture and the idea of suing each other Americans have battened down in their houses and distrust of others. Having to double lock the houses and the distrust of government when in Australia there are places you can leave you house unlocked when you go out knowing the chances of being robbed are very low. The voting system has the option of a 3rd party with it's preferential system where no vote is wasted.

I was a member of my rural town's volunteer fire brigade , 30 members in a town of 500 and all the surrounding small towns had similar numbers ,men and women aging from 14 to 70. 195,000 volunteers around Australia, about 4.5% of the rural population , probably double that counting former members. All with some training in CPR, accident rescue, structure fire dynamics and most importantly recognising what an incident is and how to deal with it. And by the way no money is paid for the volunteers or charged for a callout

In the mid 1990's I worked for an Aussie company that was bought out by a US multinational. The US sent us a CEO who was a New Yorker, he was on a 3 year work visa with his family. When he started he couldn't get his head around the fact that we would start at about 8.30 and knock off at about 5-5.30. He would demand that we put in overtime, and we wouldn't. He couldn't believe that if we worked on a weekend we recieved PENALTY RATES. He couldn't understand the 4 weeks annual leave the min of 10 days sick leave (accruable). He kept on calling us backwards, country hicks and lazy. (BTW this is in Melbourne!)
Cut a long story short, he was due to go back to the states at the end of the 3 years and at his going away, I said, "Hey Rick you must be so happy to go back and leave us lazy, backwards country hicks" the whole room went silent waiting for his reaction! He looked at me in the eye and said...
"Nic, Australia is everything America wanted to be, I'd rather live here"....we all stood there with mouths agape...I'll never forget that.

It makes me smile, and it’s really nice seeing peoples wall crack when this big long haired bearded guy with the blue eyes is smiling and nodding at them as he strolls along. At one stage, I made made the real estate agent laugh when I said the following to our cat 🐈. " Well darling, this certainly wasn't something that we planned." Anyway, my cousin's husband turned up in that truck. The farmer showed him how to drive into that paddock and was driven there. He wasn't that fazed by what had happened. It was a case of "Here we go again." Then he moved his cows to another paddock. My cousin turned up and told me to sit in their car while they helped my sister put our belongings in the truck. Then, the real estate agent went home. One last comment.

I know of a couple of times that someone has stopped their car to help my sister and I. Recently, my sister, who was driving and I crashed our car 🚗. We were taking our cat to Ravenshoe, Far North Queensland, because we were driving to Townsville and couldn't leave him at home by himself. Ravenshoe is a small town in The Atherton Tablelands, which is up a mountain range behind Cairns. Our town is up there, too, only the local cattery closed down years ago. There's a particularly dangerous turn just outside of Ravenshoe. When it rains, it's quite often very misty. Our car is one of many that have crashed our car into a certain farmer's cow paddock. But all three of us were alright. But our car.... To be continued in another comment.

I called my cousin, who lives in that town. But I handed my phone over to the real estate agent so he could tell her where we were. There's also a couple who are mutual friends of my cousin, her husband, my sister, and I who live in that town as well. My cousin works for them. They own an auto electronics business. We were all headed to Townsville for a religious event. Our friends had already left, but they let my cousin's husband borrow they work truck. My cousin texted me to let me know that he was coming. So, the real estate agent went to let the farmer know what had happened. To be continued in a fourth comment.

When the initial shock wore off and we realised that we were okay, we calmed down. Even the cat 🐈 didn't panic and just calmly laid down in his cage. My sister got out to survey the damage, so I put his cage on the driver's seat. Then, I got out myself. A man with advertising for a real estate business on his car came over to ask if he could help us. At one stage, we three people were standing around in that paddock talking on our phones (cells). Including to the RACQ to report our accident and have our car towed away. As well as the cattery, the man who owns it came picked up the cat for us. Here comes a third comment.

Before even watching this clip - and with lovely American relatives and friends - I know the answer is Australia.
Yes, I purposely used “know”, rather than “my opinion”, for FOUR main reasons.
Here in Australia we rarely have to worry about gun violence, (happens, but infrequently), and our health care and voting systems are WAAAY better, (not perfect, but we generally don’t bankrupt ourselves for medical care, nor have millions NOT vote).
The fourth reason however, trumps the others and just alone, would disqualify the U.S. from even entering - let alone winning! 🤪 - any “best culture” competition. Trump. The orange stain on humanity and his millions of enablers, who are either stupid, deluded or INCREDIBLY self-centred, means America’s “culture” needs a MASSIVE amount of work. Are there problems with our culture in Australia? Sure. Plenty. But we don’t have “him”, or the nightmarish chaos he’s brought to the world, not just the U.S., though you all suffer the most.

As to stopping miles from anywhere. We know if no-one stops they may be stuck? Who knows, next time it may be you stuck. The breakdown vehicle may be hours away, their phone may be flat, so we check. We don't have a lot of mexicans to do things for minimum wage, so we learn to be independant, we have to help ourselves and others. Learn anything we can, so when we need to we can do just about anything. We do have some sketchy individuals, so we don't leave people stuck, to their sketchy mercy. It may take days for the next person to come along we may be able to show the way or make a phone call, some folk could bodgy the car to get there or tow them, restart the dead battery or what ever is needed and follow until they get to help. Don't leave your car in the desert, the sun can kill. Take along enough water and food to survive days. A torch/flashlight, hat and a proper spare tyre. Maybe extra petrol/gas?
