I think the funniest possible option for sans being in chara's role is that the entire time, despite being brought back to life thanks to you, he just judges and complains about your actions, knowing he has no real way of stopping you until you reach the absolute. the most he can do is deliberately narrate things in an annoying way, like forcing you to solve an overcomplicated equation to find out how much an item heals, giving you long strings of dialogue that you have to sit through, or just straight up lying about certain things, like mixing up the names of the items in your inventory, lying about the stats of a weapon to make it seem useless, or even counting the amount of enemies you killed in an area wrong with no indication of if he's lying or not until AFTER you clear it out fully. Assuming that papyrus is flowey, the moment you kill papyrus and sans gets brought back to life he just fucking throttles you before performing a true reset, you dont even get a choice not to, he just goes "heya, im sans, you just killed my brother and made him believe it was me, *burn in hell.* " and immediately kills you.
Man ABSOLUTELY. This made me think about how it would go if the player decides to fuck him over by resetting before he gets the chance to gain the upper hand. Then he'd be forced to witness each reset, each ending, and each massacre over and over again, until he either finds a loophole in the game and permanently restricts your access to it. Or he just gives up on trying to make you feel bad because clearly, you're not gonna be affected by it, and you're probably gonna keep coming back if he yaps about new crap/he'll stick to his original dialogue
I think a Sans > Chara shift could work, if you wanted to keep everyone in character then Sans would still be aware of resets in this universe-- and that knowledge gives him a sort of flowey-like mentality regarding how he sees the world. Reading every book and burning every book, seeing everything and learning how everything works and so on.
