for me the saddest part of the finale is Gi-hun cried for il-nam, sae-byeok, sang-woo, it's really mentally exhausting for him, so much so that when he found out his mother is dead, he's too tired to even cry at that point and just mourn in silence, laying beside her on the floor :(

Also, about Sang-Woo killing himself - ultimately his main goal isn't winning the Squid Game. His goal is to get the winnings (or at least a part of them) to his mother. At the last moment, when Gi-Hun wanted to end the game and forfeit the winnings, that wasn't a choice for Sang-Woo at all. If it were anyone else, Sang-Woo would probably have used the knife to kill them rather than himself - mostly because he wouldn't be able to trust the other person to take care of his mother.

Yes he wanted to save his mother, but he was also willing to kill himself in the beginning and abandon her to deal with it all herself anyway. Ali was a good dude, and you KNOW he would have honored Sangwoo's request to take care of his mother. He could have asked him to do that, and played fair.

Okay, dope, I haven't seen anyone mention it, so I'll go for it: all of the main character(ish) deaths in the show were foreshadowed in ep. 2, "Hell."
Gi-Hun: swore on his mother's life to let go of his grudge against Sae-Beok. He immediately went back on it, and while he was trying to get money to save her life, she died.
Sang-Woo: was going to commit suicide to escape his guilt for betraying his mother, died by suicide to make sure she got the money she needed because of his betrayal.
Sae-Beok: threatened to cut the smuggler's left carotid artery; died when Sang-Woo stabbed her in her left carotid artery.
Ali: stole an item of value from a man who took advantage of him; had an item of value stolen from him by someone who took advantage of him.
Deok-Su: while running from his debtors and those he betrayed, he jumped off a bridge to escape them; he was made to fall to his death by a woman to whom he not only owed a debt, but also betrayed.
The Detective: was searching for his brother and found a lead via a connection to the Game; "died" upon finally finding his brother.
Il-Nam: had a conversation with Gi-Hun trying to convince him to rejoin the game; died while having a conversation with Gi-Hun trying to convince him of the validity of the Game and to use the money he got.

Sang-woo is the best game player through and through. As horrible as he did to the other players, he operated within the confine of the game rules. Even till the end he rather off himself to gain something to benefit his mom than walk away with Gi-hun with nothing. His entire focus is on winning the game from the start to the end.

Gi-hun was in a really dark place after winning the game. the old man's disgusting last ditch effort to play another game with him by betting on the drunk laying outside in the cold actually helped saved Gi-hun out of his depressing situation i believed. Gi-hun was wallowing in how inhumane the games were and how humanity was lost by the actions of the players, but seeing that there was still someone out there with compassion and kindness that saved the drunk from the cold proved that there was still good in humanity and it allowed him to move on. i was afraid that no one was going to save the drunk and wanted Gi-hun to go out there and save him himself but Gi-hun stood there waiting for someone else to do it and now it makes sense to me. because yes, he could have saved the person himself but he NEEDED someone else to do it. he wanted to prove the old man wrong and was holding out hope that there were still good in humanity. it allowed him to get out of his deep depression and use the money for the better.

I’ve watched reactions to this episode over a dozen times and I only just thought of something. It hit me that Gi-Hun walking away from the plane to the disappointment of not being there for his daughter is, at least to him, in the name of helping someone or some people dying. Which is the same thing that happened when his daughter was being born. He wasn’t there because his coworker was dying

    [Long comment ahead]
I don’t think there were stunt doubles for this show. The actors mentioned that they did their own stunts, like the glass bridge game was a real set, though the drop was much smaller, and the actors’ fearful reactions were real. And then them pulling in tug-of-war was real and apparently the hardest scene to film for most of the main cast as they were actually pulling against a machine and could not overpower it. I highly recommend watching behind the scenes and making of Squid Game videos and interviews with the cast. It’s very heartwarming and wholesome. Honestly it’s like therapy after how depressing the show is.
And Gihun and Sangwoo are great character foils for each other. Both took advantage of their moms, had stable lives and jobs until things out of their control happened and left them in extreme debt, and have especially hellish lives. But Gihun and Sangwoo have different mindsets, like what we see when they confront each other in the aftermath of the glass bridge game. Sangwoo thinks he worked hard to get to that point and he’s deserving of his spot in the final 3 whereas Gihun knows that Sangwoo, Ali, Ilnam, and the others who helped him along the way are why he got to that point. A selfish/competitive perspective vs. a selfless/cooperative perspective.
Additionally, the title, “One Lucky Day,” was a spoiler that the Korean audience understood. It refers to a famous Korean short story about a rickshaw man who has a wife and a baby. The husband has been struggling to financially support his family and care for his very ill wife. His wife asks for beef soup and for him to not go out for the day because she’s in pain but the husband refuses. So the wife asks him to at least come home early. The man then goes out and has great luck, receiving more money than normal because the rainy weather got him more customers. He feels conflicted when he’s invited to go out drinking, remembering that his wife asked him to come home early. But the man decides to stay out late, get drunk, and use his money to buy his wife the soup she wanted. However, he comes home with the soup to find his wife dead and baby crying. In the end, the man curses himself and says he knew it was such a lucky day. Essentially his luck was too good to be true. It’s the same for Gihun, all that money was to help his mom with her diabetes. But he comes back with the money, emotionally numb and traumatized, to find that his mom died, probably alone and thinking the worst of her son.
Also, there were actually a bunch of clues that hinted to Ilnam being the mastermind of the games. Heavy Spoilers has a few videos on it if you feel like watching/reacting to them! And good job on noticing that they purposely didn’t show Ilnam getting shot and theorizing that he’s the one behind it all!
And the way the characters die is foreshadowed in episode 2.
    - Ali stole his boss’s money, albeit money he was owed, then Sangwoo stole Ali’s marbles.
    - Deoksu escaped the casino debt collectors by jumping off a bridge, then died when Minyeo fell with him off the glass bridge during the fifth game.
    - Saebyeok threatened the smuggler with a knife to his neck, then Sangwoo slit her throat with a steak knife before the final game.
    - Sangwoo planned to commit suicide in the bathtub while wearing his drenched suit, then killed himself in the rain wearing a tuxedo during the last game to ensure that Gihun would win and use the money to help Sangwoo’s mom.
    - Gihun swore on his mother’s life to not bother Saebyeok about the money she stole from him and didn’t keep his word, then his mother died, presumably during the fourth game with the marbles since Sangwoo’s mom said it was a couple days since she heard from Gihun’s mom.
    - Detective Junho killed the soldier and tossed his body out to the sea, then he’s shot and falls off the cliff into the ocean. Though many people like me hope that he’s alive still because the front man was able to survive his bullet in the shoulder.
    - Though we didn’t see Minyeo outside the games in episode 2, she promised she’d kill Deoksu if he betrayed her and also mentioned feeling powerful when they leaned back during tug-of-war, and then she leaned back when she killed herself along with Deoksu during the bridge game.
I’m glad that you understood Gihun’s mentality during the ending! A lot of people who don’t like the ending mainly complain that Gihun didn’t get on the plane to see his daughter and are upset that the story doesn’t end on a happy note. But it’s tragically realistic and in character. After Gihun sees so much death in these 6 days and people at their worst, resorting to outright killing one another for a better chance at winning the prize money, he’s severely traumatized. Especially considering he already had PTSD since he saw his coworker die when they were on strike before and just went through seeing all the other players, and even his childhood friend, die in the games. Gihun missed the birth of his daughter due to doing what he thought was right in protesting alongside his coworkers against the corrupt practices of the car company he worked at and now he’s going to miss his daughter’s birthday to attempt to stop the games.
Yes, he could get on the plane and then come back, but since the 6 games take place in only 6 days, 455 people will have died by the time he gets back. Even though Gihun didn’t actively kill anyone during the games, their blood is still on his hands. As the sole survivor, it’s his duty to not let any more people die for the sake of rich people’s entertainment. Gihun still has his morality and humanity, something the games and Ilnam tried to take away. That’s why he also tried to enact the third clause during the final game, so that the money would be given to the families of the dead participants like Saebyeok’s brother and Sangwoo and Gihun could still live. Neither would have been able to pay off their debt, but Gihun was trying to do the what he thought was best. Though it sucks that his daughter will be disappointed again, Gihun has always prioritized doing the morally right thing, even at the cost of damaging his personal relationships. Xiran Jay Zhao has a great video on how Gihun’s backstory is related to the real life Ssangyong Motor strike in 2009, which I also highly recommend watching!
Personally, I really liked the ending. I don’t think we could have gotten a typical happy ending with Gihun feeling victorious and returning home to save his mom and keep custody of his daughter. It would have been really unrealistic and kind of justify killing off all the other participants. You can’t just ignore all the death and trauma that the games have inflicted on so many people. There’s so much depth and social commentary in this show regarding capitalism and corruption and a typical happy ending would have taken away from the show’s overall message. It’s a modern tragedy.
Also, the director, Hwang Donghyuk, purposely left this series open-ended and didn’t plan on doing a second season, since most Korean shows tend to not do that. However, he has recently confirmed that *there will be a second season!* We don’t know when but he’s in the planning process. Some interviews mentioned exploring the the corruption of Korean police, the front man, and the salesman/recruiter more. Since there’s still so much mystery about them and the pink soldiers, I’m really excited. I just hope that they take their time and not give in to impatient fans. Quality takes time. In fact, the director wrote this story long ago and was constantly rejected by studios for 10 years until Netflix picked it up. Hopefully no one rushes the next season to come out too soon!

I find it hilarious people are more mad at Gi Hun for not getting on the plane than they are at the people who run Squid Game about to sacrifice and kill hundreds upon thousands of more people just to appease their bosses.
Getting on the plane would have been an admission that they’re correct to do what they’re doing. It would have solved nothing in the long run. The morally correct thing to do would be to turn around.

No one who had any hope outside the game would choose to go back. Most, if not all, of the players had already signed away organs. Also a large part of the reason things are the way they are is because the super-rich hoard money. I concur with the other comment that Sang-woo was the truest player in the game. The one moment that would have led him to win it all, he killed himself…and it’s led me to reflect on why he would rather die (like in episode 2) than win the money and go back home.

i still want Inho to be "good" (as far as that's possible after shooting his brother and running the games) but i feel like he's also trying to take down the games. he obviously didn't spend any of his prize money and this whole equality thing seemed to come from him rather than from Ilnam. i can see him teaming up with Gihun for season two, but at the same time i could see him being just in wayy too deep and going full on villain.
and yes, i hope they didn't actually kill off Junho, it would make sense for him to come back

I'm Korean the last epsode's title 'One lucky day' is old Korean novel name. Hyeon jin gun's '운수좋은날'. But the story doesn't show lucky day. IT IS PARODOX.(Story is that One man got big money and he feel he is lucky one . But he went back home . And found his wife dead. He cried.)
So Squid game's this episode is the same. Gi hun won the game and got big money but the way back home. HE HAS NOTHING. mom is dead.

A HUGE percentage of things we buy are produced through exploitative labor. When you get a piece of chocolate for $1.00... consider, that is someone's life that suffered to get it... I hate it. It's so depressing. But that's the thing - squid game is our society. we could all vote to change it... but people don't care. they think they're gonna win in the end. so the game goes on.

    • @emilyclark5960
      @emilyclark5960 3 года назад +3

but you're missing the other piece of the metaphor - sure, the players in the game did terrible things to win money. but they were deliberately put into that situation out of desperation, taken advantage of by people with inconceivable amounts of money and power. the players DID choose to end the game at first - but it didn't matter because they were just as powerless outside as they were inside.

    • @NirvanaFan5000

@@emilyclark5960 that’s not true at all, you can’t make that statement. The only person who’s circumstances we know that got screwed over was Ali. Gi hun is a deadbeat who refuses to work and uses his kids birthday money to go gambling. Sang woo stole millions of dollars and belongs in jail. The thug dude stole from his boss. Saybeyok even if she had noble intentions was trying to pay for human trafficking. her situation is messed up and so is Ali’s. Rest are scum and we don’t know the circumstances of other people. You can’t say they’re all victims who were taken advantage of and beat down by society

    • @emilyclark5960
      @emilyclark5960 3 года назад +1

@@homielander5924 I have to disagree with that. "gi-hun is a deadbeat who refuses to work" remember when he had a job, went on strike and then he watched one of his friends die in front of his eyes? can you imagine the trauma and distrust in companies that must've implanted? can you imagine the working conditions that must've led to that strike? and then he tried to open a chicken shop that went bankrupt for unknown reasons? addiction is a mental illness. we don't know when or how gi-hun developed an addiction to gambling, but his life circumstances clearly did not help him recover lmao. I can't imagine he would have had many resources available to him. and when you're already in the shit, gambling is appealing because you're just waiting for that "one big prize" that will finally solve your problems.
I'm not saying he's some flawless guy. it was incredibly shitty of him to steal from his mom and gamble birthday money. but as someone pointed out in another comment section, the amount of money he won wouldn't have been enough to pay for a nice dinner and a present like he promised his daughter, so he turned to gambling because he thought he could ultimately win more money and keep his promise. I have thoughts on the other characters as well but I've written too much already lmao

The show is so packed with meaningful symbolism and expert timing, that I don't think anything comes about by chance. The reason for Il-nam to create the games is bullshit because the whole game and all those deaths are meaningless, and that's the point. It's part of the futility and dystopia, there is no higher meaning.

My take on Gi-Hun's decision to turn back and return to the games is slightly different from what I've been reading so far. Gi-Hun has good morals and his heart is in the right place. But he's also a gambler. Sure, he wants to vindicate what happened and perhaps help to end the whole thing. But I also think he somewhat got addicted to the deadly games in a morbid way. A bit like the character played by Christopher Walken in The Hunter, where he turns a traumatic experience (being forced to play Russian roulette) in a way of living. He couldn't escape it.
If we think about it, this duality is foreshadowed when the old man is dying. He plays one final death game with Gi-Hun and Gi-Hun goes along with it. Gi-Hun desperately wants the poor guy on the street to survive, but if it was only for the sake of humanity, he could've easily gone outside and help him himself. He didn't. He played the game. The old man still won in the end.
