A theory I heard that went around to explain Superman’s super weakness and his design in season 1 made a lot of sense to me, the fact that he’s suffering from the drawbacks of the krpytonite missile from the end of superman the animated series. Since it dealt such heavy damage to him, it weakened his body, so a lot of his usual strengths and abilities are missing, hence why he got knocked around so much.
The mention of the Cardboard World speech. That still gives me chills to this day. The fact that everything he was able to do was him holding back was great. Last year the tabletop game Heroclix made a Justice League set based on the DCAU, the Superman in the starter box has his power names as lines from that speech.
Justice League and Justice League Unlimited combined are my favorite show of all time. Not in a Marvel vs DC mentality, but in a “this show has some of the greatest writing, characters and storytelling I’ve ever seen” mentality. It blew me away as a kid and now at 27, I’m shocked almost at how well it continues to hold up, especially in light of WB and Zack Snyder’s bastardized attempts to turn these heroes into his own personal Watchmen fanfic
I mean Watchmen is basically the same bastardized version of Charlton comics with few DC comics charecters thrown in. Alan moore originally wanted to use Charlton comics charecters, but the head of DC at the time (who also was a writer & the head of Charlton) refused because it disrespected the original charecters, so moore gave some cosmetic changes yet still obviously the same characters and presented that to the head, who while reluctant gave permission to publish them. Also Zack snyder's Justice league isn't the worst version that honour would go to Frank miller's Justice league where Superman is a emo rapist and Wonder woman a abuse & rape loving bullshit feminist BTW I am not making any of that up.

Fun fact about this show, the creators said in every fight scene Wonder Woman was in, they made sure she was the star in them and kicked the most ass. Because Wonder Woman is awesome.

@Will N I rewatched stuff, but yeah, it wasn't always clear to me that 2 years or so had passed. 8:20 Actually that bit with the signal watch is one of my favourite things in this story - Batman's casual reaction of "Right" is just so him. Even if he DID end up using it - guess he kept it in the utility belt just to humour Superman?
Its weird that Kids WB was hesitant to do a DC animated show where the cast is mainly adults as opposed to kids and adults, considering Superman the Animated Series was produced for Kids WB. Sure you had Jimmy Olsen and Supergirl, but the cast was primarily adults and the main character was of course a grown man.
When exactly was this pitched to WB? They did have a period of utilizing action shows around the turn of the millenium, but they were slowly sinking back into comedy shows. Not to mention they were trying to find the next Pokemon with only one successful series in Yu-Gi-Oh. They weirdly reran the first season and a half of Teen Titans at some point. Bunny thing is, when Kid's WB left the airwaves, they did rerun one of the Justice League cartoons. I think it was during Saban's short lived Toonzai (or whatever it was) block.
Man does the justice league animated series still hold up well to this day. I really love it. Many of the episodes are fantastic, has a great voice cast, and a kick-ass awesome opening.
Two little factoids that Linkara didn't mention: - Senator Carter was named after the title character from John Carter of Mars. - When Superman is at the UN talking about "earning humanity's trust" and the US general guy saying how they can't trust Superman is meant to be an allusion to the finale of Superman: TAS, "Legacy," where Superman was brainwashed by Darkseid in to conquering Earth. There was dialog that would have made it more explicit, but the writers figured that not everyone had seen "Legacy" and didn't want to confuse new audiences.
Michael Rosenbaum being the flash and then later being Lex Luther is awesome. One of my favourite lines from the show is still “I have no idea who this is” awesome suit.
It’s still a bad sign for DC’s films that an animated show did in three episodes and the Arrowverse did across multiple crossovers what they could not: tell a satisfying Justice League story. Also anyone love Carl Lumbly and Phil LaMarr’s cameos on Supergirl?
@@YourUncleBenis And Elseworlds, and Infinite Earths and most of the crossovers, minus that one involving Vandal Savage. Seriously I don’t think anyone remembers that episode.

Justice League Secret Origins pays not-so-subtle homage to previous Mars sci-fi films/programs. For instance, the way Carter was replaced by a Martian comes right out of the Gerry Anderson series Captain Scarlet when in the first episode the leader of an earth expedition to Mars is replaced by a Mysteron, the most evolved sentient life forms on Mars that can replicate anyone or anything, but only after destroying the original. And by-the-way the inference is that the real Carter was killed and replaced. Then, as the host says, the meteors come to Earth and morphs into killer tripods comes straight out of War of the Worlds. Kind of cool the way they worked these two tropes into the Martian Manhunter origin story and this series kick off. And the Imperium looks like an upside-down ripoff from Marvel's Supreme Intelligence.
This show is so nostalgic for me. It was honestly my introduction to the wider DC universe and a shared superhero universe. I knew about Batman and Superman but the Justice League tv show was my introduction to rest and they did it so well.

No word of a lie: the WB JLA Universe is THE best adaptation of comics into any other medium ever. It was good for both adults and children, dealt with some interesting concepts, and despite changes to the characters, it stayed true to the essence of those characters. It is the purest distillation of DC comics, and far better than anything DC has put out since it finished airing. Batman, Superman, JLA/JLU, Static, Batman Beyond... it was an amazing creation, and I doubt we will ever see anything like it again. Attempts to reboot it have had mixed results at best, and Marvel knows not to try and match it, but to do their own thing rather than drop out a pale imitation.
It truly says something that this show *still* stands the test of time and contains many of the definitive versions of these characters and served as a gateway for introducing the less popular ones.
As one of the guys who commented on remembering The Mighty Heroes last time, I'd be surprised if me and the guy who Patreoned the review weren't the only ones that remembered it. The key difference between the Justice League cartoon and that show is that WB will never stop marketing the DC super heroes and will continue to release the series on DVD, Blu-Ray, streaming and whatever, and Viacom looks at thew Terrytoons characters and says, "Nah! We have Spongebob."
... damn it... now i'd like reviews of "Injustice For all", "Wild Card", and/or "A better World" or whatever the Justice Lords stuff was called again... or maybe Star Crossed... Lord Batman's Verbal spar with League Batman... "They would have loved it here, wouldn't they?" "Who?" "Mom and Dad." "Just drive..." after League Batman had lost the first round.

I just want to point out at 8:06, when you posed as "Batman," saying how awkward it was for wearing the Superman jacket (I apologize if guessed it as the wrong kind of jacket,) there was a cake company a long time again that had molds of a superhero with his positions having his hands on his hips and his cape flying around. They also had plates of Batman and Superman's face and logo, using the frosting to create the outfits. There was a time I was at a birthday party where I saw two cakes of Superman and Batman as the birthday cakes. Believe me, my my mother made those kind of birthday cakes for me (and yes it was the Batman cake). T^he interesting this is when when one cake was finished with the other one, the mother of the birthday boys that I went to the party at the time, had the Batman face on the Supoerman cake. Kind of interesting. It would be amazing if you had a Batman and Superman Mego action figure and switch costumes around. But if you remember in Superman, in his animated series when he dressed up as Batman because Bruce Wayne was taken over by Braniac with nanobots, and how in the Brave and the Bold TV series and the Batman II Lego video game (don't get me on the Batman Lego Movie. I LOATHED IT!!!) how they switched uniforms because when "Superman" was hit with Kryptonite, he was still able to punch the enemy, being that it was Batman in disguise as Superman. Also, Martian Munhunter did the same tactic in a later episode of Justice League to bring Lex Luther to prison for the first time. But back to that cake company, they also had a mold for Wonder Woman, which they had a heroine mold, with the face and logo of Wonder Woman. I think the baker would do the coloring of the hair. Which I believe could be very creative as for being Wonder Woman's own black hair; or if they want blonde, brunette, or red. Which I will say would be Artimis in I believe 1993 or 1994. However, that would be until all the DC Legends molds would be out of stock and you might have to get it a Flea Market or possibly Ebay.
This series was great, this show along with Teen Titans and Static Shock taught me most of what I know about the DCU, and the rest I learned from watching your reviews Linkara. :)
Well, yeah. Reviewing the opening of a beloved series, pointing out both good and bad, also providing behind the scenes info on how certain parts of the show came to be (creation, voice cast change, Superman being too weak in S1).
This show was amazing. The Death of Ace. Golden Amazo. The Question. Wonder Woman and Batman. The end of Batman Beyond. The Justice Lords. Solomon Grundy and Hawkgirl. I could go on but it was one of the best shows I ever saw.
Maybe it should've been Diana that John contacted telepathically that way she'd felt it more as a call to arms and answering a cry for help. Plus given their close friendship later on this would've been a great start to it.
@17:42 The DC heroes have always taken liberties with the no killing rule so long as the enemy isn't human. Even the backlash to Diana killing Max was because Max looked human as opposed to everyone else Diana had killed before then.

Ah, the series that introduced me to much of the larger DC Universe. I still remember watching this on Cartoon Network, and later, on Toonami (which I say, was a fitting place for the show). (Rubs hands together) Ah, this is going to be fun. 0:20 Because Superman needs better media than the movies. 6:26 I suddenly have the image of the Doomslayer in DC. I knew he was working on his space elevator, but I didn't know why. A good start to a great show.
I love how many references you can see in these episodes: Superman 4, War of the Worlds tripods, the astronaut is named Carter as in John Carter of Mars. This is how I first learned about John Stewart Green Lantern, J'onn J'onzz, and Hawkgirl. Wow. That's actually kind of mind-blowing when I think about it.
I think the in universe explanation for Superman being weaker and looking more gaunt in the first season was a retcon that he was still suffering from some residual effects of the Kryptonite missile that almost killed him near the end of his own series. I genuinely think that Justice League/JLU is one of the top 10 greatest American animated shows of all time, possibly top 5, but then I'd say that of almost any of the Timmverse shows.
After watching Justice League fully I gotta say this is my favourite episode of the show it feels like an actual justice league movie more than the whedon or Snyder cut imo
So the aliens at the beginning: -are called the "Imperium" -shapeshift like skrulls -use both War of the Worlds AND Body Snatchers tactics -and are weak to sunlight Honestly that is some badass fodder if you ask me.
I actually found the Imperium rather creepy as a kid honestly. Their weird, organic, almost living technology. Their faceless and completely alien appearance. The fact they can shapeshift so convincingly they can be anyone. Their habit of imprisoning still living people in giant red cocoons to FEED off of by leeching off brainwaves. And then there's the little fact they caused the complete genocide of J'onn's people. Then there's the head Imperium himself, whose torture scene of J'onn was just a whole lot of nope.
@@GeneralKenobi75 The Imperium are nasty yeah. But they also aren't original and to be honest they are meant to be bad, bad, baddies for the heroes to beat up in the beginning of the series. And they also aren't built to be completely original (we both listed off things that aren't original ideas) but they took these ideas and put them together in the best way possible. They also sorta remind me of the magic aliens from ROM: Spaceknight.
"I guess when you get frequently invaded by aliens and demons and stuff, landing on another planet just seems pretty mundane." Very mundane in our world too. After the first two moon landings, interest in moon trips became basically non-existent. Cape Canaveral's tourism industry was hit hard by it and it caused many knock-on effects in the nearby towns and cities.
God, this was a trip down memory lane. Is it wrong that I want to see you review more episodes? The Savage Time would be fun. 1. While the Imperium and his army are okay, they feel somewhat empty compared to the Green-White Martian Civil War and Malefic from the comics and other sources. 2. I actually don't mind Cyborg being part of the Justice League. He and Shazam becoming friends was something I wished the Animated movie universe had explored more. Plus one DC cartoon, I think based on Imaginext or something, teased a good side plot out of it. Victor and Robin started off as basically junior members to the League. At the ending Robin said that, once they got enough experience, they would go and form their own team, briefly showing the other Titans.
Your look reminds me of a very old comic I read. I don't remember all the details, but due to growing horns on his head, Superman swiped a Batman cape and cowl from one of the many hero museums the Pre-Crisis DC Earth had. In the Tripod books, aliens basically nuke humanity back to the medieval age and use these mind control caps, and the titular Tripod vehicle, to rule over the population from their domed cities that emulate their planets atmosphere. what made the book interesting to me was how the author described modern day objects that have been forgotten to time, the aliens city, and even other people. Just an interesting note on the Martians using paralytic gas. The big reason chemical weapons are a war crime isn't cause "chemicals bad mkay" but because they are indisctimiate: they will hurt civilians. So in a scenario where there *are literally* no civilians its not really a war crime.
I had to double take at the White Mountains reference; I haven't thought about that book in literal decades. On a related note, I'm pretty sure the hand grenade scene in the War of the Worlds remake was directly taken from the climactic battle of that book.

Two little factoids that Linkara didn't mention:
- Senator Carter was named after the title character from John Carter of Mars.

But neat.
One of at least three references including the Tripods and the invaders using black smoke.

In Justice League Unlimited they do explan that the Wonder Woman suit was originally made for Hippolyta.
It truly says something that this show *still* stands the test of time and contains many of the definitive versions of these characters and served as a gateway for introducing the less popular ones.
Young Justice did it to a certain extent with the newer Blue Bettle and characters like Geo-Force and Halo.

@@larrylaffer3246 It _does_ cross back into BB at one point, so if you want to avoid confusion, it is worth watching as part of a full binge. Still worth it on its own right, of course.
I remember catching the first part of Secret Origins on TV and never seeing the follow up episodes. Then when I was 15 I was able to buy the DVD and the DVD for Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker when my family was on holiday to Movie World (An Australian themepark on the goldcoast for Warner Bros. stuff, IDK what the American equivalent would be) and finally watch it through. Good times.
11:06: Seriously? Did you just reference the Tripod books? Dude, I read those books when I was in High school. They blew my mind as a kid with how creative they were.
I thought it was a loose reference to meet the Robinsons lol
@@elieeee6 No, though I wouldn't be surprised if Meet the Robinsons had some influence from the Tripod books.
There's this guy named Beanpole because he's tall, and he speaks in an accident making his real name sound like Beanpole (His real name was like Ben Paul or something. I think he was Scandinavian or Swedish.).
I remembered the books, but I could seriously not remember the titles or author.
There were a lot of books I read which that happened to, because I had teachers who would let me read any book in the back of the class provided I finished my classwork correctly. (They eventually regretted this decision as some other students begged for the same deal, and it made the teachers look bad they had students ... essentially speed-running their classwork.)
11:06 - A reference to 'The Tripods' from 1984-85? Didn't know anyone else remembered that series. Neat! ^^
Alright, DCAU review and on monday no less.
AWESOME!
Just an interesting note on the Martians using paralytic gas. The big reason chemical weapons are a war crime isn't cause "chemicals bad mkay" but because they are indisctimiate: they will hurt civilians. So in a scenario where there *are literally* no civilians its not really a war crime.
He did say they were desperate.
The guresome thing with martain manhunter is most likley the he's not human so it's ok classic kids show rule.
red blood bad
green blood good
@@jesusmora9379 blue blood is ok. Not as common but works fine.
I had to double take at the White Mountains reference; I haven't thought about that book in literal decades. On a related note, I'm pretty sure the hand grenade scene in the War of the Worlds remake was directly taken from the climactic battle of that book.
You really should have used HISHE "Because I'm Batman!" clip when asking how Batman escaped.
You were on fire with this one. I always love your back and forth between Batman and Superman.
The jokes kinda write themselves when watching the DCAU.
