Happy Birthday Bill Stewart! Drum Licks and Crosstalk Groove - Multicam

- Jazz drummer Bill Stewart is 46 today! (Oct 18, 2012) Bill has easily been the greatest influence on my jazz drumming. The first clip is a lick he uses sometimes during solos. I play it fast, slower to give a good view of the sticking, and then full speed again. The second clip is another idea he uses during solos and he orchestrates it in many interesting ways; two of which I demonstrate here at fast and slow tempos. The final clip is a short demonstration of a groove he plays on a track called 'Crosstalk' from his own album 'Snide Remarks'. The end of the clip shows the sticking at a slower tempo. This video is the fourth installment of the 'Drummer's Birthdays' series on mikecarroll.ca/
UPDATE - I've added notation to the original post. You can see it here: mikecarroll.ca/...

Awesome video. I wondered how those licks we're done exactly. Now it's time for me to practice.
Thanks for the share, Shraunbone! I'm glad you find it helpful.
wow - that's a LOT of info! love all of these licks... and those cymbals are just gorgeous!
Glad you liked it Eduardo. I'm really enjoying your videos. Great work!
such a nice job drum friend! Thanks for uploading this!
Hi elsegno! They are both 22" Dry Complex Rides. The one on the left is thin and the right is medium thin.
Great great great great! Amazing drumming, man!
Crazy, Mike! You're a fantastic player. Hope to see you again at the Whittle one day soon!
Thanks Beechnut75! I am using two complex rides. The left is a 22" thin 1st gen, and the right is a 22" medium thin 1st gen. I'd really like to get a 20" 2nd gen like you have!
Thank you very much for writing and watching, Jankely Felix del Aguila!
Thanks Keith! The bass drum is muted with a single moongel placed near the lower edge of the batter head. Stay tuned for a follow up to this video to be posted soon!

Hi keshavbatish!
Thanks for watching. From left to right, the cymbals are:
14" A Zildjian Quick Beat Hats from the '70's I think
22" K Custom Dry Complex Ride Thin
22" K Custom Dry Complex Ride Medium Thin
19" A 'Beautiful Baby' Ride w/ 3 rivets
Glad you like them. I sure do!
very cool
Thanks zu0832!
Thank you Cesar Bonfa!
That a Gretsch hit? Great sounding kit!
It is a Gretsch New Classic in the standard bebop configuration. The snare is a Ludwig 6 1/2 x 14 hammered bronze supraphonic. Thanks!
Is that Maple? Supraphonics are normally an aluminum mix, right? Thanks man!
The snare is bronze. The exact same model that Bill Stewart uses. The toms and Bass are maple. The supraphonic designation simply refers to the type of strainer. Hope that clears things up! : )
Check out the link in the video description. I've just added some notation to the original post. Thanks for watching!
Are you playing two 20'' Dry complex rides?
Hugs.
Wonderful! Is the BD muted and if so, how?
How would you notate the first lick?
