I've used dozens of Epson printers over the years, and each iteration has been a good improvement over the last. This is a capable photo printer that produces excellent quality results when used with the proper paper.
The printer is very easy to configure via WiFi. My Mac, Windows 8 PC, and iPhone all detected the printer once it was connected to my home network. The printer shows up as an 'air print' device within iOS and I was able to print borderless photos directly from my phone's camera roll. I did need to make sure my Mac was using the Epson driver vs. the air print default that OS X prompted me to use initially.
Photo quality is excellent on high quality glossy photo paper. To all but discerning eyes these prints will look close to what might come out of a local photo lab. A very close look at the prints will reveal very fine dots that comprise the image but it's very difficult to see those from a distance. The printer uses 5 inks: A high capacity black ink, another "photo black" ink, cyan, magenta, and yellow.
I am not crazy about the paper handling system. It doesn't hold much paper and the trays can easily be pushed in too far.
When combining the expensive photo quality paper with equally expensive ink cartridges, the cost per print is probably equal to or greater than the price of using a photo lab to make digital prints. So be sure to factor in the overall cost of ownership vs. the very reasonable entry cost of the hardware.

Thank you Lon - I was desperate 'cos I couldn't figure out how to open the output tray, so after two emails fired off to Epson Support I finally turned to RUclips and you, and you showed me how.

Just bought one from Walmart, I needed a new printer and I wanted to jump on the wifi band wagon for mobile or remote use.
I very pleased with ease of setup, I do agree with you about the paper trays. Thanks for your video post.

Thank you for you great review!!!
    I'm buying it!!
Finally decided to update my well used R220 that I have been using since they first brought them out, which is the longest any printer has lasted! Still going strong, too. Just want to upgrade. :)

"open the output tray manually" message. It took me two hours to work this out. When the display is horizontal and you're sitting at your desk with the printer on it, you can't see the tray that you need to pull out. Bend down and look under the display and you'll see the top tray that you need to pull out. On my XP-625 It's immediately below the two arrows with the disc image in the centre and tray looks like it has two fins on the underside. Pull this out and hopefully you'll never see the exasperating "open the output tray manually" message again.

Thanks for the good review Lon. I purchased one from Staples last night ($50 mark down) and have to agree that the paper trays (both in & out) are a bit tight and takes some time to master. But this is a compact printer, which is perfect for my purposes, so I still prefer it over the larger printers I compared. The print quality is well above average, 4x6 borderless being excellent! The xp-610 connected to my WiFi effortlessly, I then installed on 2 laptops and connected my Galaxy S4 Android with no issues at all. Google Cloud ready as well. One laptop I used the install CD and the other I just let Windows 7 find the drivers... both installs went without a hitch.

Great review as always. There is a iPhone/iPad app, VueScan that allows you to scan wireless direct to your device as well. I used this recently to scan some old photos to my iPad, crop resize and then family members could chose what ones they wanted, then print, job done. Handy

Thank you for the review. You saved me the trouble of taking back the Epson XP-620 thinking it was defective. I was stuck on the "open the output tray manually" error message. I spent 30 minutes on that.
Since when are trays a problem? Load the paper and print.
    But not with these Epsons.
(Anyway, I got the Epson to print graphics on blank CDs. We'll see how that works out.)

After an hour messing with this POS I decided to return it. If I'm having these kinds of nightmares now I can't imagine what I'd be faced with a few months from now. Heck, my 13 year old HP never had problems like this. I'll be shopping around for another HP after this experience with Epson.

I've got 2 of these. On both, within a couple of months of each other, they flagged up unrecognisable cartridge messages, even though only original Epson ink was being used. On both occasions, Epson replaced the unit which meant I had to remove the cartridges before I sent the units back. New (refurb'd) ones came back with a set of starter cartridges which, because I use both quite heavily, I managed to get through in less than 2 weeks. Went to replace them with the old set and... unrecognisable again! I thought it might somehow be a faulty cartridge but I tested all five (all of which which worked in the old printer perfectly well) and ALL of them failed to be recognised - £80 worth of inks made useless by being removed from the printer (although nicely wrapped up with a clean chip) for approx 10 days. Be warned!

I've owned this printer for about a year and a half. I love the quality of the photos, and use many different high end papers. Lately, however, there has been a photo-destroying black blob of ink on the paper. This will ultimately cause me to buy a new printer for my photos. It's fine for copying, since I don't do a lot of that anyway. I can't make the fax work. If I need to scan, I scan it to a thumb drive and then walk across the room and pop it into the back of my Mac. Also, I don't recommend buying ink from Epson. The issues that some people have reported (such as the priming process using up 1/3 of the ink in the cartridge) is accurate. I buy from the local office supply store and never have problems with ink. Overall, I have recommended this printer to several people. I will NEVER go back to hp after using Epson.

The output tray feels as though it should be automatic. There is that level of resistance that you can tell it is supposed to motorized but isn't.

I have 1 xp 405 and it works good though I would not recommend it. The wifi funcion works when it feels like it, sometimes it will and then the next time it wont, especialy the scan funcion is a headache.
When you print a photo one day (works great) and next day you want to print a normal text in black it will use all colours to create black!! instead of using black ink. You have to change the settings everytime if not it will burn through your colour ink cartridges very fast if you dont notice it on time.

I'm able to connect my Epson XP-610 to my wifi; however, when it goes into sleep mode it becomes disconnected from my wifi, and even when I wake it up, it remains disconnected from my wifi. Right now, the only way to re-connect it to my wifi is to turn my printer off, then on again. Once it powers on, it finds the wifi and re-connects. Do you know if there is a way to have it become re-connected to my wifi from sleep mode? My computer actually indicates that the printer is online when it is in sleep mode, but it gives an error message when I try to print something.

I'm seriously thinking of buying this model with the intention of printing DVDs and CDs. You don't cover this aspect of its operation and can only say that 'you don't have any blank DVDs'. Are they difficult to obtain in your locality? But you had previously warned that you'd used a third-party ink, which 'killed' the printer. Does this mean that it just isn't possible to use 'compatible' cartridges with this model? If so you should issue a serious warning! Your video is excellent otherwise, and it's a real pity that you've not covered these important points. Perhaps you could do an update? I'm sure many, like me, would appreciate that.

Just to let you all know it does not matter if you push the photo paper tray in all the way or wherever it makes no difference at all. The photo paper tray will be drawn inwards anyway once you print.
So no need to worry about pushing the photo paper tray in too far it will not harm anything and it is made to move with the paper, rather the same as the CD printer tray, it moves with the CD in it as does the photo paper tray.
So it is not a design fault at all and is just part of the way it works.
Also I can get 100 sheets of 80gsm paper in the paper tray so 50 sheets is not correct, it holds a lot more.
People who review these printers should take a lot more time to read the instructions properly and also get to know the printer before they review it here.
I have always used Epson printers with compatible inks too and this is by far the best printer I have the pleasure to use.
Simple to set up as it does everything itself especially connecting to Wi-Fi.
I think rather a shabby review and would put some people off.

***** True! That's why I'm here. I just bought the 620 & it's the first time I had trouble LOADING paper! On past printers, it was scanning capabilities. Now the scanning I can do blindfolded on my printer, but I feel I need a PhD to know how the paper tray must work.

i bought this printer yesterday and it is rubbish, there are no proper instructions and the set up is on a cd which is totally useless. ive tried to print stuff out but it keeps saying about the output trays and it is not clear what position these trays need to be in and the paper keeps getting jammed. If you are not a technology buff then you will need a lot of patience to set this up. Also beware that the display screen is extremely sensitive so u could end up choosing the wrong option. im very close to returning this to the shop

Does the output tray have to be manually opened every time you print? I just got the printer and cant find a clear answer. Ive read that it does come out motorized, and on here you say to do it manually. I cant find a solid answer anywhere else.

I bought this printer for the photo tray. I print out 4x6 and 5x7 glossy prints and this worked fine for a couple of weeks. Now it won't work. Even when I click on "use paper from Photo tray" it grabs the paper out of the main tray. And if I empty the main tray, it just sits and and says error. Any suggestions? Any help is appreciated. Great review; and I agree with you concerning the issue with the paper trays, although I've now got accustomed to it.
However, I do have one major gripe which isn't necessarily the fault of the printer. When trying to print a photo from my Windows 8.1 pc, it will only print a part of the photo before the printer display reads 'Cancelling' and stops. This happens every time. And yet I can print complete photos from my Motorola mobile and my wife's Mac. Any suggestions?

The Epson software shows I have the fully up to date drivers, I've done the inkjet cleaning & alignment and I can photocopy with no problems

I don't usually leave poor reviews, but take my advice, DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER. It is an ink eating monster. When I remove the cartridges they still have ink in them and need to be replaced much more frequently than any other home printer. Truly Epson should be embarrassed. I feel so ripped off. And I had poor photo quality. Just ended up printing my photos at the store.

Lon. I picked this printer up the other day and I'm having one problem I can't figure out. Every time I try to print something it tells me to "Manually extend the output tray". Isn't it supposed to extend the output tray automatically when it receives a print job? The main hassle with this is if I'm trying to print from my laptop or android phone from another room the print will not be waiting for me because the tray needs manually extended.

Never buy this printer, it is a piece of junk. It will not automatically get ink from the second black ink cartridge even if this ink is full. It will just keep taking ink from the smaller one causing you to buy ink unnecessarily. This is just the beginning, I've spent more time on the phone with Epson trying to fix stuff than I have actually using this thing. All they do if blame it on the program and pass the buck. "It is Adobe's fault, it is Apple's fault, Call Microsoft, your wireless has changed". I will never buy another one

This is one of .the WORST printers I have dealt with. You cannot print unless it recognizes or accepts all printer cartridges to be full. .i.e If one cartridge is empty you cannot proceed. your
printer may as well be dead. It will not print. My old Canon printed it just looked ugly. Like most GREEDY Businesses they live for income from you Needlessly having to buy ink THEIR cartridges.
I have installed NEW cartridges and it still gave me trouble. OTHER than that it is an OK printer for what I do.
