  • The late British rock star and popular music historian Ian Whitcomb interviews legendary ragtime era songwriter Shelton Brooks in 1972. Originally, Ian asked me not to post this video because Brooks was elderly and it does not represent him at his best, but I recently realized this is still a rare, historic document that should be shared. Included are the stories behind Brooks's hits such as "Some of These Days" and "The Darktown Strutters' Ball." Pianist Dave Bourne also appears at the end of the video.

The smile on Shelton Brooks's face tells us that it is wonderful to share good stories, and perfect or not, it's the sharing, not the perfection that counts.

Let us not forget the classical ballet prima donna who, when 95ish, and wheelchair-bound, when she heard the music she danced to before, she began a lovely dance in her chair just as elegant as she could. It's the same for Shelton. We must treasure this video.
