Saving Private Ryan is a 1998 American epic war film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Robert Rodat. Set in 1944 in France during World War II, it follows a group of soldiers, led by Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), on their mission to extricate Private James Ryan (Matt Damon) from the war after his three brothers are killed in battle.
I remember when this movie came out, there were interviews with WWII veterans who were part of D-Day, and one question that was asked was how realistic was this scene. One veteran said the only thing missing from this scene was the stench.
No matter what side of the war youvon on, if you served and somehow miraculously made it out with your sanity and morals intact, i salute you.
Nothing more like hell on earth than a battlefield...

He knew that. He was just talking about the general attitude of those in combat.
I think he was speaking based off of his own experience as a Marine. And yes, while the Marines were mainly conducting amphibious assaults in the Pacific, there were Marines present on D-day. I believe they were working on the USS Texas and there were some detachments on board ready to be deployed to reinforce the Rangers if need be.
I had the chance to see this in the theatres when SPR was released in 98', it was an amazingly immersive experience. I was really curious about what I was about to see because Spielberg had released Amistad the year before, and I was aware of his background, his father serving in the war and all. I knew it was going to be special just because of Speilberg and his team, but I didn't expect how spectacular it was and is. I once heard a story of some kids had vandalised a WWII statue or something like it. This was around the time SPR was out in theatres and the judge sentenced the kids, with other caveats I'm sure, to see this movie and learn the stories of american soldiers and their sacrifices.

My father was the eldest of three brothers and he enlisted in the Marines after Pearl Harbor anyway. Served in the Pacific from 1942 through 1945. My grandfather was so pissed that he enlisted (Grandfather was a farmer so my father would have been the only other family he would have had to help on the farm during that time.) that he refused to even speak to my father until 1948.

Semper Fi. This Marine understands. When I saw this the 1st time I have to say I cried. My great Uncles were in WWII. Not in the D Day campaign but served nonetheless. That generation, they gave what they had to give. Especially in the east.
WWII vets said this scene was 100% accurate.
From an old Devil Doc, SEMPER FI. My father served with the Marines in WWII as a Corpsman. I did 6 cruises. From Vietnam to Afghanistan. Nothing as this intense, but we did get the job done
The Americans landed on Omaha and got the worst of it. They had no idea there were, I think, 1,000 war-hardened Germans waiting there (the Nazis were deliberately misled about where the Allies were landing, but they had defense up and down the coast). The French and British suffered losses, of course, but the Americans got ripped apart, as seen here. I can't even f'ing imagine being in this. I always say this generation is called the greatest for a real, damn good reason.
Sorry, I said French, but they were Canadians. I think there were some French mixed in with the Brits after Dunkirk, but don't quote me on that!

One thing is always missing from every movie, and that is the smell, flesh, gunpowder, vomit, and blood. Once you experience it, you never forget it, enough said.
I shipped out to Army Basic Training a few months after this movie was released in theaters in 1998. Whenever we had down time during training, which happened a couple of times, the Drill Sergeants would march us into the Post Theater and we would watch SPR. One of the senior ones was a Vietnam combat veteran and was a short time away from retirement, and he told us that the violence and intensity of the movie come close to real combat, but real combat is much worse. I did not experience combat situations myself during my military career, but I imagine that he was right.
No Marines were at Normandy only Army. And behind enemy lines the 101st and 82nd Airborne jumped in just before the beach landing

Crazy how the plan itself was considered genius, yet fuck all went wrong several hours into the invasion.The main reason being the bombers kept missing their targets to give adequate passage to airborne and grounded units. The germans were confused, but so was everybody else.

Almost 133,000 army soldiers from the United States, the British Commonwealth, and their allies, landed on D-Day, and 0 Marines.
Army did the bulk of the fighting in the pacific as well, they just don’t go on about it.

If you look at Western Europe today, all of this sacrifice was for nothing.
USA lost in WW2 - 418 000 people. Young guys.
Russia lost - 27 000 000 in WW2 and they won it!
That's true. If Hitler had not turned toward Russia I wouldn't be here. We in the west faced 50 German divisions and had our hands full. The Soviets faced 160 German divisions. And won. Most Americans are not even aware.

American boys who died in Europe. Allies from European countries are no different from the Russian guys. The Americans are sure that they won the war. A young nation with an instinct for domination. My city in Russia is over 300 years old. United States, whole country - 245
