I was that all or nothing perfectionist. Then I realized my time is finite. For me it boiled down to a cost benefit analysis and for most things that is almost intuitive. Recycling is important to me, but I am not willing to spend 10 minutes and 20 gallons of water to perfectly clean out the cranberry sauce can. The cans that I can swish in the dirty dishwater before emptying the sink get recycled, the ones that need special care go in the trash. 90% of cans recycled is better than no cans. I loved Cass talking about being kind to her future self and treating her as a friend and Kendra talking about being a friend to her current self. Would I force my best friend to stop reading her book in order to mop the floor to have a perfect house, no. If I wouldn’t do that to another person, why would I do that to myself? I can finish my book and mop heavy traffic areas and move furniture and appliances with next week’s moping. It took me a long time and a lot of feeling miserable to learn part of this for myself. Wish I had found a lazy genius decades ago (in my 70s).
I’ve just turned 60 yrs and only just realised no-one is “ marking me”, no one is going to check if I’ve cleaned under the fridge, I am not at school I’m not getting a gold star for laundry. I spent 30 years in a standard job and then went to university and became competitive and driven, and I struggle to shake the need to be top of the class😂
I have never heard of Kendra until I listened to this, but I wholeheartedly agree. We choose our priorities at the moment/in this time period. And yes, everyone chooses what matters to them, and it's different stuff to different people. In this season of life, even though I get judged for it by friends and strangers alike, it's my priority to spend time with my kids and give them all the attention and extra home-made everything a stay at home parent can give them, in spite of an advanced degree and having put a well-paying, respected, and also very time consuming and stressful career on hold. I am NOT wasting anything, I am just channeling it into a different place right now.
I heard a great line at a talk once (as a 'take the pressure off yourself' encouragement: "If a thing is worth doing well, it's even worth doing poorly!".... I was reminded of that during the conversation. Great guest. Love your vids, Cas. XG Ire
This is so good. We have been dupt into believing we have to be perfect in everything, esp. housekeeping or we have failed at life. Thank you so much for this video. I wish I had heard this 40 years ago. I guess at 80 it's never to late to change and enjoy life more.
I LOVED her!!!! I resonated so much about about being able to be present when things are tidy. My daughter always wants me to play in their playroom and I can’t play with her in there bc all I see is the piles of toys that need to be decluttered and put away. And as someone with severe ADHD and Anxiety, folding out laundry neatly and being OCD about some things is the only form of control I feel with my home while I’m working to get the other areas. It’s a hard balance to juggle.
Wow, I am so happy to have listened to this today!! I'm a 64 yo woman who has lived a lot of seasons, from a single woman in the 80's working corporate America, to married and having the awesome 'job' of raising 3 great kids as a stay at home mom, to now an empty nester who's retired. That lens of perfection has always been my view towards myself. My/me generation always had 'the plan' for moving forward in life, and you must not deviate from that 'plan'. Looking back, how limiting that mindset was. Today, I am going to be kind to myself and where I am at, today. Thank you!
Kendra Adachi, you're my favourite writer since your 1st book . I own your 3 books, am addicted to your podcast and loved this one with Cas. Well done you two, what a team ! Thank you
Thank you for hosting Kendra! I have her books in ebooks and audio books and arcs. I am so interested in what she is learning and sharing with us all. Lazy genius about everything including time and whatever. You have had a revolutionary experience with my understanding of how to understand the way we organize and how to help others to declutter their own space by asking questions and letting them decide what they want and honoring their choice about that item in that season. It’s been very helpful with my brother who has a developmental disability or more. He’s now been able to get a habit of doing things that keep his room clean and tidy. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences with us, so much.
The timing on this is impeccable, I really needed this. I just took over a management position at my job because my boss is on maternity leave... and I had a colossal meltdown last week by trying to do everything perfectly when I don't even know the ropes yet. Thanks for giving me permission to suck sometimes, the world isn't going to explode if I don't do everything perfectly.
Those first few minutes of insight are so valuable to everyone on the planet. We need shift from the patriarchal view of what is a priority, heroic and valuable in this world for men and women alike! Thankyou for this interview, both of you, and also the laughter and humour, too!
Thank you for this incredible discussion. I cried during the part where we are criticized for the wrong way to swim when we're just trying not to drown. 😢 As a Mother, I'm so thankful for this reminder that I don't have to do it all. I can confidently choose what matters most, and not apologize to myself or others for what I choose to let go (or do a less-thsn-ideal job at). Thank you both for your honesty!
I heard years ago the difference between men & women is a woman will say " I'm going to bed" on the way she takes care of the dishes, gets thinks ready for next day, etc, 1 hr later husband kisses her & says "I'm going to bed" & HE GOES while she's folding laundry. I make his lunch & a breakfast sandwich 5 days a week, while getting ready for work also (3 days); occasionally he will have a day off during week but I'm working. So I might ask him to do something(not all) for my lunch & he use to get tick at me. Needless to say I put things into perspective for him & in the last 2-3 years of our marriage I find he prefers to help more at supper . Thank you ladies enjoyed your talk, will have to check out the book.❤
💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 Uff! I feel so relieved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😄😄😄😄 Thank you that was amazing and exactly what I needed. Currently my inside pressure is so high😳 and I feel really stressed out and can't relax. If someone tells you you're allowed to listen to yourself and setting your own priorities it's easier to let go and slow down and be more present and not all stuck up in your head with the constant question "what's next"? Go go go! Get it done! Letting my laundry wash and hanging on the sofa was the best I could do for myself this morning😉😄
U know me w/ out knowing me! Thank u for this interview 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 finally I can see the light !!! THANK U FOR GETTING MY DAILY STRUGGLES! I found my people. I am grateful & thankful for ur support!!! ❤
Glad to have listen to this. Found Kendra’s take on productivity struck a cord, so I went and bought her new book when I finished the podcast. Look forward to reading the book. Thanks Cas for having her on your show
A moving finish line ... for sure! She is so right about the "plan" we are supposed to choose and then follow until death. Thank you so much for this video. I will probably buy her book. I hope you know the good you do.
Curious as to which area of the country Kendra was raised...the way she was speaking with such conviction; reminds me of 'old time preacher'! This is SO crazy! I literally just listened to Kendra’s audiobook this weekend at work and ordered her Lazy Genius Kitchen and it’s coming in a few hours from Amazon! I’m stunned that I opened up RUclips and here she is on your show!❤
I do think that this is helpful if you are working beyond your capability or to the point where it is unhealthy for you. I can also see how this can be viewed as permission to live in an unhealthy mindset. Life is more important than perfection in any area if that perfection takes away from your life. That said, it can be unhealthy to go the other direction. Someone who struggles with procrastination and is overwhelmed by things might view this as permission not to get a handle on clutter and general upkeep. There is definitely a link to good mental health when you are not living in clutter and mess.
I love all your advice Cassie about doing it badly - it’s helped me consistently work out and keep my home clean. I have yet to feel like doing any of it - but the action brings those amazing dopamine rewards that fuel me (not to perfection but my personal best) My motto is “you are Susan lol ! Help her” and there is a domino effect because then tomorrow me takes care of the following future me -not perfectly but consistently. Of course if you have a migraine like Kendra said - yes reach out for help from your other family members or friends - but on normal days - I’m taking care of Susan!! 😂 That podcast you named a future person - still makes me laugh out loud.
Yes! So Cass, I am like her! My kitchen and living room are always comfortable and clean. The rest of my house, eh, not so much. So what is my style called and how do I get to the rest of my house?
Dude!! I've had to put an expiration date on my chicken carcasses. 😂. I give myself, let's say 30 days to make it happen. And if it doesn't, trash. It takes up too much space. I love the, "Not everything can matter." That's powerful stuff.
I don't agree that I have to trade anything to have an organized sock and underwear drawer! It doesn't take that long to do. I'd rather spend a couple extra minutes on the front end than spend time rummaging through my drawers to find what I want. So you could say all I am trading is aggravation later!
Maybe what you missed here is that the whole house was a disaster. When your whole house is a disaster, it really is good enough to just have your socks in the drawer. When that person gets their house more under control, maybe she’ll decide that folding underwear is important. Or maybe, like me, she’ll decide folding underwear isn’t really necessary.

I can live with my whole house being a disaster, I’ll get to it. But having my drawers organized make my day to day easier and it’s easy to maintain so I’m with you!
What they are saying is, if your whole house looks like it’s been burgled by 5 criminals, and you are carefully folding your panties, what are your priorities? They’re not talking about YOU.
Unfortunately, it matters to me to dispose of things in an environmentally responsible way. It’s one of the things I care deeply about. The thought of things going to landfill absolutely kill me. So I recycle everything I can, I compost, whatever. But I know that’s making it so much harder for me to get rid of stuff I don’t want or need. I really am struggling, and I doubt my situation will improve until I figure this out. Sometimes I think I should go ahead and, just this once, toss what needs to be tossed, but I struggle. It really kills me 🥺
My husband's family is so judgmental and I realized they are also extremely judgmental of themselves. They have such high expectations of themselves and other people that they literally don't leave their house. It's been a good example for me of realizing that it's ok not to be perfect as long as you are LIVING
Not folding your clothes means they won't fit, so you throw out half your clothes. It doesn't take that long to fold a load of clothes. It also gives you a break from vacuuming, dusting, and cleaning the bathrooms. As for a load of laundry every day, the bath mats, decorator towels, or curtains count as a load. The sheets on one bed count as a load. I may have 2 spatulas, but one is plastic, and one is metal; this makes a difference. I do a lot of cooking from scratch. I don't do mail-order meals, so if I have multiple pots and pans, it's because I use them. If you cook in bulk for large groups, you do have a use for multiple crockpots. Cooking for one means you need small containers for single meals. And they do not need to have their lids on them. If you can grab it in 5 minutes, then the containers are stored right. If you have a complete set of sheets, mattress covers, etc, it is right if you have to change that bed at 2 am. and get back to sleep ASAP. When you are doing taxes, you don't want to go through a box of paper for one document. That is the purpose of file folders. Your camera bag and laptop bag should have the appropriate cords and cables with the equipment. When you have to evacuate, it's a grab and go moment. There is no time to look for the one cord or cable in a box. If you're going to make a mess cooking, make a BIG mess to store in the freezer for future meals. My spaghetti sauce provides 6 meals. A pasta pot is not a single use item. It can be for boiling a chicken to make soup, boil corn on the cob, and potatoes for mashing, making potato salad, and boiling artichokes. I use my food processor for chopping onions as well as mixing cookie dough, and my potato masher for mixing juice concentrate and a bread or cake without butter. Finally, the pasta fork can be used to grab that item just out of reach on the top shelf.
My kids were my number one. I worked and after work being in my kids activities was the most important. My house was a wreck. Now they are older I wonder why I did that to them and me. They got fed really well and had clean clothes but nothing was tidy. Now in this stage of my life because I lost my job due to injury I choose to tidy and declutter. But I will drop everything if I am needed for family. Things are things. So watching these videos are new and my house and self have become neater and tidy. So enjoying this video.
I am so proud of you Cas! You are helping inspire me on my journey and you are crushing being an inspiration and support for all of us and encouraging us to press on but love ourselves along the way.❤
Sure. Recycling is good. WHEN YOU ARE OKAY!! If youre struggling, it doesn't matter if you throw something away instead of recycle it. That one specific piece of trash will not hurt a turtle. But it's hurting YOU by being in your house. Chuck it.
Not me staring at my spotted bananas wondering if I should put them in the trash for tomorrow's pickup because banana pancakes haven't happened yet... the moment you talked about rotten bananas. 🤣 Off they go. 🚮
I am a woman with a partner who washes up and tidies up. What's my excuse for not being on top of things? Women are different: not all are mothers who look after families and their partners. A side note: Cold showers help build resilience against colds and flu and strengthen your immune system in addition to any mental benefits.
I love, not, the way she blames men and “the patriarchy” for women holding themselves to unrealistic standards. 😂😂 That’s crazy. Sorry but we women do this to ourselves.
I was that all or nothing perfectionist. Then I realized my time is finite. For me it boiled down to a cost benefit analysis and for most things that is almost intuitive. Same! That may be one reason I like "coworking" (working remotely with someone while reporting progress)
This made so much sense to me.
I love “The Lazy Genius” books, listening to them on repeat. Soooo helpful!
Listened while throwing out crap and decluttering. Tackling things now so I’m not stressed for the holidays!

She's awesome, isn't she? I think you'll really love her books!

I love this! And now you know what you said helped a fellow 60 yr young woman who wants everything perfect!
I love this! My 2 favorite things I'll start with are: Loving myself where I am and getting mad at my 'stuff' so I can let it go. 🤗 Big Hugs ❤️

Gonna listen while I start cleaning up the mess that happened over the weekend, since I woke up with vertigo. Fun!
Oh God, I love this. Sometimes I'm so exhausted I don't even think i have the capacity to be nice to ANYONE!
Oh, Kendra! Your laugh brings me such joy! It's boisterous, authentic and contagious!! Thank you for being so real!

Just bought The Lazy Genius Way as a Kindle version while watched/listened to this podcast!!
32:27 whoa Cass!! This is huge thank you!! I love you and Kendra SO excited about this talk
❤❤❤❤❤
Love the perspective of choice ❤️♾️❤️ Truly choose what's important! 8:30
Great podcast!!
30:43 that’s why I SOOOO appreciate that you offer this wisdom all for free!
You help change lives and patterns and we dont have to feel guilty for “buying one more thing” (unless you need too 😉). We can do this!
Thank you loved this podcast and will apply the practices to my life. ❤
Thank you ladies so much! This listen was amazing!! I needed this so long ago, but I'll take it now. So helpful. Such insight.

Thank you for this podcast! Kendra said the quiet parts out loud so now we can all acknowledge them.
What an awesome conversation!! I'm going to listen to this everyday until it's second nature in my thinking process. Thanks ladies!!
I love being able to trust tomorrow me to do what I can’t today! I think we need that too sometimes
I’m listening to this for the second time!
💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 Uff! I feel so relieved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😄😄😄😄 Thank you that was amazing and exactly what I needed. Currently my inside pressure is so high😳 and I feel really stressed out and can't relax. ❤
I love Kendra!! Her podcast is awesome and I've learned so much from her. Thanks for having her - loved the show!
Oh my goodness. This is one of the most useful podcasts I’ve listened to. God bless you both and thank you!
Loved, loved, loved this!
As a child who was raised in Appalachia, a few minutes through the podcast my attention was quickly given to her and thus, felt like she was speaking to me. This is SO crazy! I literally just listened to Kendra’s audiobook this weekend at work and ordered her Lazy Genius Kitchen and it’s coming in a few hours from Amazon! I’m stunned that I opened up RUclips and here she is on your show!❤
This was wonderful! So supportive and life affirming. ❤
This video had me thinking about what was said long afterwards such that I had to return to say that I LOVE IT! It me permission to be me
This was an awesome listen. Exactly what I needed to hear. I'm going to check out Kendra's books!
Excellent podcast! ❤
Love love love this!!!❤
This was really powerful. I needed a brain surgeon to teach this to me!! Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Love Kendra so much! ❤❤❤
Thanks cas❤❤❤ and kendra lady....I've not been aware of. Til now. Broken butterfly
I will need to listen to this again.💜🐞
KENDRAAA!!! Yay! Thank you for interviewing her! She heals my soul 🤪😎🥰
Wow 🤩 she is SO SO wise and insightful - I feel like I just had an epiphany 😅
I do think that this is helpful if you are working beyond your capability or to the point where it is unhealthy for you. Good podcast but spare me the patriarchy speech 🙄
❤❤❤ Kendra!!!!
Let's just be a person today ❤❤

I folded (some) clean
clothes that have been in a basket for the last month 😂
But I spent 3 weekends in a row traveling
My kids were my number one. I worked and after work being in my kids activities was the most important. My house was a wreck. Now they are older I wonder why I did that to them and me. They got fed really well and had clean clothes but nothing was tidy. Now in this stage of my life because I lost my job due to injury I choose to tidy and declutter. But I will drop everything if I am needed for family. Things are things. So watching these videos are new and my house and self have become neater and tidy. So enjoying this video.
So, I’m watching this Cas and I’m wondering, how are your fitness goals going? I hope you are crushing it! 💪💜
I'm so much stronger! I haven't lost weight, but I've gained muscle and stamina, so that's a huge win for me.
I am so proud of you Cas! You are helping inspire me on my journey and you are crushing being an inspiration and support for all of us and encouraging us to press on but love ourselves along the way.❤
@@ClutterbugPod 👏 Awesome

I love the line, "Stop shoulding all over yourself". "Should" to myself or from others, is q red warning flag.
The best thing is: don’t put it down, PUT IT AWAY! Second, if it takes less than a minute DO IT NOW.
Sure. Recycling is good. WHEN YOU ARE OKAY!! If youre struggling, it doesn't matter if you throw something away instead of recycle it. That one specific piece of trash will not hurt a turtle. But it's hurting YOU by being in your house. Chuck it.
Omg truth!!!!!!
❤
Not me staring at my spotted bananas wondering if I should put them in the trash for tomorrow's pickup because banana pancakes haven't happened yet... the moment you talked about rotten bananas. 🤣 Off they go. 🚮
❤❤❤
Eye opening: Time management books written by men, bought by women.
New goal: immediately put the syrup in a place where the children will never find it by themselves.
Thats me exactly, my underwear drawer is perfect, the rest of the house is a mess
Volume went down , couldn't hear

I am a woman with a partner who washes up and tidies up. What's my excuse for not being on top of things? Women are different: not all are mothers who look after families and their partners.
A side note: Cold showers help build resilience against colds and flu and strengthen your immune system in addition to any mental benefits.

I love, not, the way she blames men and “the patriarchy” for women holding themselves to unrealistic standards. 😂😂
That’s crazy. Sorry but we women do this to ourselves.
🕗❄🚿? Nooooooo
Honestly. I used to watch you all the time until you started using swear words. Sorry, I have to stop watching your newer videos.
She has stated that she does not have God in her life.
