    I would wear that diamond brooch! It's beautiful and I absolutely love it. The opal is also quite stunning, but if I had my choice, the brooch is the winner in my personal opinion.

      @ all diamonds contain carbon 14 which cannot be older than 10’s of thousands of years old due to the half life of carbon 14. I can prove what I “believe”. Can you?

    That opal was absolutely stunning.The play of colour!*fans self*.I'd go for that first.But unlike the owner,I don't think the diamond brooch/pendant was hideous,I quite liked it.

    Opals are simply beautiful. So many colours, every opal is unique in colour pattern and they change colour depending on which way you look at them. By far my favorite precious stone. 4:10

    I suspect the diamond brooch was called "the soup plate" because, at some time in the past, her Mum looked at the piece and said, "Lord love a duck. That stone's the size of a soup plate!" or something similar.

    The English have the habit of under-valuing precious jewelry.
    That opal alone is worth triple or more of what was quoted. And same for the brooch. 8 carats $35k. ? Worth so much more.

    I believe she's undervalued the opal. The opal alone is worth £5K. With the diamonds it would be significantly more.

      @ - Yes, you are correct. I listened to it a few times, you are right. I don’t understand why she would value the opal/ diamond brooch that low? The diamonds alone would bring more than that, even if a poorer quality, then the massive opal would bring much more. I suppose it’s the market. If nobody wants it, the price drops.

      Jewelry made at that time was often made from cast silver then coated with a layer of gold.

      Platinum was not used in jewellery before the very late 1800s, and very rarely in association to an underlay of yellow gold (which it does not structurally need). Also, you can see the oxidation/tarnishing in the setting of the centre diamond.
