- Pretty unique stuff, LNER A4 Pacific 60009 Union of South Africa in steam towing 4468 "Mallard" from York main line station to Shildon for the last Gathering of the 6 A4s. This vid has it all, two iconic engines, a touch of last minute drama (failed headlight) noise, steam, wheel slip, and fantastic whistling. It was hauling Mallard to this event

That smell of coal smoke and hot lubricating oil is unique and instantly brings back memories of my childhood in the 1950s. I saw 60009 going over a viaduct on the West Timperley line when I was about 9 years old - I was a train spotter and this loco made a real impression as it was so unusual to see such a loco in that area near Manchester and even the number was easy to remember. How amazing to see this beautiful machine again some 60 years later. I wonder if there is a log of all the journeys this loco has made since she was commissioned?

Had the joys of seeing Mallard on the 88 run at Ribblehead. A mere 5 year old then. I'd rather Flying Scotsman be stuffed and mounted than Mallard
@@Guard_Amos I agree - why the NRM continue pouring OUR money into that bucket of bolts instead of Mallard I don't know. (For what they have spent on it they could have built a RELIABLE replica).

@@lucamarmiroli4563 I think William means that Mallard should be being steamed and not just towed, a sentiment shared by many British steam fans. Your misunderstanding is probably caused by William's efforts to keep his comment short, something not really required here.

just looked at yours, yes very similar viewpoint.
4468 is in good buffers with 60009 pulling/shunting her. 60009’s tender is the only surviving piece of the famous Gresley W1. So actually there are three Gresley designed steamers here: LNER A4 Union Of South Africa, LNER W1 “British Enterprise” and LNER A4 4468 Mallard. The W1 was to be given the nameplates of “British Enterprise” and her name plates were actually cast, but they never were applied. The name plates are now at NRM York, albeit in storage.
imagine if they make the replica of LNER W1 but in A4 style
@@xjxnebxg the closest thing we have to a full size replica of the W1 is a large scale model of it which was once displayed here in America but it has since returned to England and now is on display at the Darlington North Road Station Museum aka Head Of Steam.

60009 Union South Africa is retirement at moment is at bury railway museum on display
60009 is on permanent retirement.

Mallard needs to be restored to working order. How hard can it be? It is obviously fit to be towed. If they built a new A4 Pacific like they did with Tornado I reckon that it would easily pass 130mph.
Parknest at minimum it needs a brand new boiler
The NRM are restoring Sir Nigel Gresley so Mallard might be next when it is done.
They won't be restoring her anytime soon, she is the most original A4 left and it earns the NRM money if it is sat at York.
The Sir Nige won't be finished anytime soon. Mallard's running gear must be fine if it can be towed so a total resto wouldn't be necessary. Just enough to get it in working order and to be able to get a boiler ticket. I once saw Sir Nige going through Leeds station and I managed to get it on video:

Mallard hasn't steamed under her own power since 1986-1988, with the Union of South Africa due to be retired in 2019, may be its time for Mallard to return to running order. To be honest the most original A4 left isn't Mallard it's the 2 North American Based A4's Dominion of Canada and the Dwight D Eisenhower, as Mallard had her boiler redone in the 80's.

well it cost 4.000.000£ just to refit the flying scotsman but with mallard it would probably cost more than that so it's highly unlikely that mallard will ever return to steam cuz she last ran in the 1980's and that was the last time she was on the track before being put into the NRM

A year or two would be pointless. If you are going to do it you might as well make full use of the ten year boiler ticket.
Mark Atkin I thought about that as I was making the comment.. but to be honest having 4468 “Mallard” and 60103 “Flying Scotsman” ( yes I am purposely leaving out 60163 “Tornado”) in steam for Mallard’s full (and last) decade of steam tours and visiting heritage lines, it would be amazing! Even a double header of the two would be amazing and historical!
Why does mallard have no outside cylinder motion?
+Some Clan Because it has no boiler certificate, is not capable of raising steam, and as it can't steam it can't lubricate the cylinders, so when being towed its decoupled. And if it was coupled you wouldn't see it anyway, because Mallard wears its wheel set valances, and Union of South Africa does not. Valance-less was how they were run in their later years on the main line, for ease of maintenance.
Mallard has that certain mystic quality about it. Why not convert a steamable A 4 into her and place the other engine in the museum as a representative of the class. Failing that idea. Just what is stopping Mallard from steaming again. Surely it could be repaired to a “ low steam” state just for exhibitions

The fenders which covered the wheels on the "Union of South Africa" were removed during the second world war for easy access and never replaced

Valances were removed, i.e., not refitted, after maintenance during WW2, to keep costs down and service times short.

It’s the expense. They’ve just completely rebuilt Flying Scotsman and it would cost as much to get Mallard going again. She will one day.
Niall Don’t you think the money would be better put into other projects though, since we already have a few A4s in running condition? Why not bring back a locomotive that is a sole survivor, or put the money into rebuilding a long gone class?

The only ting that could beat Mallard at 200 kmh towing 1,500 tons would be the giant Antonov plane & that would need 2 journeys , I remember as a young boy my late dad giving a pack of cigarettes to driver & stoker I boaded the footplate of Mallard & tooted her whiste he took me there on his Douglas Dragonfly , wonder where the bike is now , cheap & fairly fast for a 350cc , comfy too , copied by B.M.W , now a Dougie costs @ £40,000

now both mallard & union of south africa will both have to be towed, because they both need new boiler,s & they say its not fesible to give them a new boiler plus any other work that needs doing, i would much rather see both these great engine,s out doing what they were built for, than sitting silent in some museum, prob to never steam again, back when these were built, if any steam engine happend to need a new boiler, then it would get one, but thats when things were done properly, not like now, where everythings all to cock.
You know what I wish for? Steam and Diesel running along side electric around the world
