- Underwater archaeology in the Mediterranean was born in the sixties, following the application of the scientific method of archaeology in underwater exploration. Terrestrial archaeology, on the other hand, has very ancient origins. Let’s try to imagine that Troy, the pyramids, the Etruscan tombs, Carthage, the Roman Forum, the Wailing Wall were not discoveries known and studied over the course of hundreds of years by science; let’s then think of the vastness of the sea, of the shipwrecks that took place in history, and of other marine phenomena, such as the submersion of entire cities because of submarine earthquakes, and we will have an idea of the enormous possibilities of this new frontier of knowledge.
The giant marble cross ∗ the shipwreck of the sarcophagi ∗ the path hidden by the sea ∗ Baia, underwater city ∗ submerged mosaics ∗ the Herculanea way ∗ the story of the Ulysse’s Nymphaeum ∗ the submerged breath of the Vesuvium ∗ the grottoes of the Romani ∗ the pool of the mooray-eels ∗ the fish-farm of the Emperor ∗ the Temple under the sea ∗ the harbour sculpted in the rock ∗ the garum industry ∗ the channel of the Storms ∗ the quarry of the millstones ∗ the route of marbles and granits * the small lighthouse of the ancient port * the submerged harbour * the vase of the tunafish merchant * the mistery of Capistello
