This documentary proved prophetic. He was forced to retire for driving a car without a license. Sumo are to adhere to strict social standards. Part of their ranking is based on their character as a person. When his coach was talking to him about being a respectful wrestler- he was worried about him.
I fully understand where his coach is coming from. The coach was not only drawing from his own experiences but also from what it takes to make it to Yokozuna. Grace is one of the ingredients.
What’s crazy is that seeing this documentary I immediately thought “he won’t make it.” He he made it to the top divisions proving me very wrong. I hated to see him go out like that. It says a lot about the strict principles upon which they are expected to adhere…driving a car without a license is enough to get you forced out.
I know it's controversial, but "outsiders" are on even more scrutiny! Imo, They should work twice as hard to prove they are better then some stereotypes!
Otake is such a great teacher! His eye for details and concept of practicing Sumo with heart is appreciable. Japanese culture and their setup for developing sumo wrestlers is too good.
He is the pride of our nation. I never get tired of watching this video over and over again. Celebrating his success half way across the world and wishing I could show more support
I also want to became a sumo wrestler but I live in India and my mom dad will not be going to allow me but if I get chance I'll do my best . Sumo is every thing for me
My name is jayesh Bothra I live in India, delhi mansarovar garden 2nd floor I really want to become a sumo wrestler. But my mom dad doesn't like this game .I love this game . sumo is every thing for me. I love you sumo. If anybody can help me with some advice . if I get a chance I'll do my best.
right. demostrating the sports to spectators is the number one duty of rikishis. even winning cannot top it. he doesnt really understand what it means to stand on the dohyo.
Hang in there Boody, we all know it's tough but you are writing your own legend. You have fans all over the world. I'm from Brazil and you have many fans there. Stay strong, take Egypt all the way to Makuuchi! :D
I hope he is still fighting , I believe Sumo would be more popular if gaining muscle mass rather than fat gain were the priority { along with calasthetics and weight traing } ; I hope he can be the example " you " don't need to have such a high fat percentage to be successful in Sumo .
He's been doing really well. He's been ranked in the second division (Juryo) for a total of almost three years. So he is a sekitori and considered a pro, making good money. Though it took him six years to progress to that level. sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=8899
I think Osunaraashi has been thrown out of sumo by the association for conduct unbecoming of a rikishi. I don't know the details but I'm sure he is out. So much for having a good heart.
Sumo wrestlers are not allowed to drive a car. Osuunarashi was driving and got involved in an accident. This was after an injury had dropped him out of the top division. It is unclear if he could have healed up and returned to the top division.
He's been up in the highest division (Makuuchi), but has fallen recently due to injuries and his somewhat limited fighting style. He is now in danger of being demoted out of the second division (Juryo), after posting a losing record in September. This would mean the loss of his salary and other privileges.
I always was fascinated by this sport. What I will never understand how some people can follow this sect created by a pedophile. Today the bastion of terrorism.
Seemed like he had such potential, but don't forget, he was a young man and in a different world than his home. Shame he was banned because of a traffic law
Ol' Sandstorm is a nice guy and all of that, but he's not a very exciting rikishi. His little trick with the elbow only lasted one basho in the Makuuchi before the other rikishi took notice of it and developed countermeasures.
No sympathy from me. Go hard or go home man, you have to live and breathe Sumo, you have to go past that point, be selfless, and something this guy couldn’t do without- pride.
He’s weak and ambitious person, that’s way he never became greater Sumo rikishi, and main things he’s coward and spineless! Lake big dram- a lot of noise, but no useless!
I am absolutely enthralled by sumo. I want to watch as many sumo matches and documentaries as I can.
Have you ever try sumo wrestling before reformed? My name is Kevin
Me too
What a bittersweet documentary to watch, knowing the fate of Oosunaarashi, makes me see this as such wasted potential.
the teacher is so heartfelt. He really is pouring his life into the sumo atheletes. I hope he can realize what he's doing for him. it's very touching.

unfortunately the future aint looking too bright at the moment
"Hold on to what you feel right now" Nice thing to say after a win.
Feel sorry that he eventually failed his coach and let him down. Sumo is more than just winning the matches.

Awesome documentary probably the best on RUclips!!
Where ever you go, God bless you Osunaarashi..
After watching this video, now I highly respected this sport. 🙏👍

He never understood what sumo is. What he thought was a victory only. He failed. Naturaly

There is much to learn on all sports. It's not just a game is a way of life.
Unfortunate, Hes now forcibly retired; March '18; caught driving without a license. Going to fight in MMA
What a noble sport!

The name is not "rikshi". It's "rikishi". They should have someone comment that actually bothers to name things correctly.
his favorite wrestler was takanohana who was the same man that measured his height.
Im so proud of that japanese to take in the egyptian that he saw he had a great passion for their art.

Dude sumo has some great core values
I love their culture. They grow wrestlers and great men at the same time
What do you think? I am now 17 and 6'7". Maybe Japanese Sumo life is too hard for a Canadian boy? Continue to work hard I will be cheering for you!
You can do what ever your mind is set in. Go for it.
hey, you're 25 now at least, hopefully you did strongman or powerlifting?

Does anyone know what happened to Ginseizan?

I just saw "The Normal Life" with Kyokutaisei Takuya. The coach for Oosunaarashi is a thousand times better than what Takuya had.
i agree. i was thinking the same thing
Sam Oosunaarashi certainly has a better dad too.
Takuya is still a Sumo

He retired
@@ItsJustBen.e In sumo, you can be forced to 'retire' to avoid public embarrassment. (Harumafuji also retired and everyone knows why)

The master was Right. 'it was unnecessary push down and 00su needs to learn from it.'
BTW - he's no longer in Sumo so,, he didn't learn after all.
He was only 20 years old
Good luck in Makushita!

are there weigh divisions in sumo?
no, it's open weight.

Why is the treble so incredibly loud in this? I had to turn it down a lot on my equalizer to save my ears from that female voice.
Can you really observe Muslim religious requirements in Japan? Even the chicken / beef not slaughtered in a halal manner?
who gives a shit?
There are more and more foreigners in Japan, including Muslims. Halal food isn't that hard to find... Or eat sea food, for the protein. Salam.
