Michael might not have created the moonwalk but he did make it very popular. Anytime someone here's the word moonwalk we can't help but to think about Michael.
I keep seeing this perception too often around MJ dance videos, people think MJ copied the backslide which is incorrect. Michael had, in essence, created a completely different version of the backslide which became phrased as "the moonwalk". Although the backslide and moonwalk are very similar moves, they are much different on a technical scale, the backslide requires you to drag your feet back one at a time to create a dragging backslide effect, it can come off as rather clunky, however MJ completely changed this by forcing you to push off with your standing feet to further create the illusion of "walking forwards but moving backwards". He also added the neck movement to further elaborate the dance move and progress on the theme of "walking forward". I'd go as far as to say that Michael created a whole new dance.
That's just like saying "Eddie Van Halen or Prince didn't create the guitar, they just played it better than Jimi Hendrix." Jeffrey Daniels TAUGHT Michael Jackson how to do the Backslide as you see MJ has done throughout his career. MJ fanatics will come up any lame ass excuse to take credit from the original artists and give it to MJ. Next thing you clowns will be saying MJ wrote the guitar part to "Beat It" and had to tell Eddie Van Halen how to play it.

For me seeing Dancer Bill Bailey do the exact moonwalk moves in the 1943 film "Cabin in the Sky" 15 years before Michael Jackson was born and again in the 1955 Apollo Theater clip, three years before Michael Jackson was born eliminates the need for discussion of the origins, the history, where Michael Jackson got it, what he said in his autobiography, the kids in the street who developed the dance,l Cab Callaway's claims, and all the other discussions. I'm going with the picture.

I used to have a vhs video of the Electric boogaloos, who were a major popin dance group (active from around 1970s), and I belive it was an interview with popin pete or Skeeter rabit (a crew member), they were explaining the origin of popin dance, much of it was inspired from studying old school pantomiming, and they specifically, studied videos from a French pantomime performer, called Mercel Merceau, from videos they borrowed from a local library. When you look at popin dance, and the moon walk, the 'illusion' is a big part the dance, and when we compare the 'illusion' to pantimime, to me the connection is very clear. Popin taco, who was a member of the Electric boogaloos (and also starred in a film called 'Breakin' 1984) was officaly hired by MJ as a choreographer, for a period of time. MJ actaully shared a stage with Mercel Merceau, once, later in his career in 1995. A simpler version of Backslide probably always exsisted, but then when the popin-dance movement happened, street kids who were incooprating pantomime techniques into popin dance, most likely merged the two into a moonwalk. Also, popin-shrimp (another memebr of Electric Boogaloos) who went by the name of Turbo, did a moonwalk in the film 'Breakin' (1984).
