His use of Genesis 15 to describe a covenant just blew me away. I totally glossed over that part anytime I ever read it. That is the most profound foreshadowing of Jesus I have yet learned.
When Genesis 15 was unfolded, I simply wept. I went back and listened again 2 days later, and again wept. I’ve been a Christian for 44 years, and now the gospel makes full sense. Covenant Law AND Love. Jesus is made all the more beautiful. Wow.
Everything Rev. Keller said was a distillation of books of theology. But more importantly deep understanding and personal experience that the heart can feel of what covenant is. I rarely hear any preacher mention what convent is, let alone a whole sermon on it - I do not recall I have ever heard one, other than this one. This is one of Timothy Kelley’s best I’ll listen to it again to really absorb its depth. God bless you brother.
To this day this is the most inspirational sermon I have ever heard. When Tim got to the part of God "walking between the pieces", I got chills down my body, and in my mind's eye I was standing in Abraham's place watching the God of the universe swearing to bear the burden of the covenant whether or not I kept it. :)
A gem of a sermon, Pastor Tim. Praise the Lord our Father for giving men like you utterance to talk to our hearts about our faithful Redeemer, Christ Jesus. Praying that He is feeling very close at every moment in your season of anguish.
Thank you so much for this eye opening truth Dr Keller. I now understand the gospel of Jesus Christ a lot better. That Yahweh desire a covenant relationship with me. Wow!!!!
Thank you Reverend Tim Keller for this sermon Covenant Relationship 💖 Listening all your teachings since 2020 Praying for you and your wife . God bless you all the time. 💞
Thank you Tim Keller, I listened to the first 10 minutes, and as rich as it was I was convicted to stop to look at how and if I am applying the truth of that covenant with my wife with God and with others
I have read Genesis 15 at least a dozen times - and l just did not get it, until today. Awesome and stunning. Scary. What you know you are responsible for, in the sense of "response-able." God reveals covenant but without my response, it will not benefit me.
I didn't follow your connection between Jesus taking the punishment of the covenant and then unconditional blessing for all of us. Without consequences for sin, what incentive is there to stay from it? What benefit is there to stay from it? Paradoxical obedience is not a concept I remember reading in the bible. The first part of this sermon came straight from the bible, but the second half is analysis I cannot find directly mentioned in the bible.
Andy Sparkman He is simply referencing the very scriptural fact that sin requires a sacrifice, and Jesus becoming that sacrifice is what justifies us and frees us of the punishment for that sin. It is absolutely the gospel. It shows clearly how God is keeping his word on both counts by guaranteeing that there is the required sacrifice for the sin without compromising the covenant of love He made. A just God who also is a loving and forgiving God. To understand the context one must truly understand the difference between covenant and mere relationship.
With his perfect life, Jesus Christ completely fulfilled the terms of the covenant. And with his sacrificial death, he completely fulfilled the curse of the covenant. And that leaves the blessing for you and I
I wish we could forger the terms conservative and liberal. Nobody is fully either or in all situations. Also because people show partiality, favoring some over others, against the Word. This divides people into two mountains; of the blessed and cursed, abandoned sheep. So on which mountain do we have a responsibility to worship on? Cursing or like Jesus, blessing? It really is a choice. God blesses everyone, and specifically instructs us to do the same. It is men who resist or curse each other, for whatever reason they can imagine and more, even despite the cross, will the pharisees hinder others, from entering a brotherhood on the terms of presence and mercy, like God intended. Jer 29:11 is not fulfilled, because of partial people claiming the authority belonging solely to Jesus and denying His redemptive power. And then asking for the Holy Spirit for guidance! Do not repay evil with evil, the vengeance is from God. No doves were cut in two (!) only the offerings of sacrifice, which the Spirit Himself dealt with, without the interference of man. God does not need the ’help’ of man to fulfill His Word, but for us to do the teachings of Jesus as prescribed.
Crying here in 2024 because God is so gracious and yet so just and righteous. His love is deeper than anything there is.
🎚Tim Keller espouses the Gospel with bell-ringing clarity. Really a blessing.
