Once I’ve smelled the higher tiered fragrance, Naxos for instance, I no longer want the less expensive (pure Havane). It kind of ruins it for me? Almost alway, you see why the more luxury fragrance cost more.

There is a big difference between Naxox and Pure Havan and that is the dry down particularly after a few hours. All the Mugler A*Men have a similar DNA on the dry down that I find off putting and the Naxos is like heaven.

After 18 months collecting I have found that money does seem to make a difference in fragrances. Usually, the least expensive frags aren’t as pronounced, don’t have the longevity, aren’t as complex and just don’t smell as rich as the more expensive ones. I’m not saying this is true in every case but it’s more then not from my experience. One of the things especially I have found is longevity, niche (more expensive) frags simply seem to last longer, which is to me a major point of wearing a fragrance. That’s why I’m pretty much selling off most of my cheapies or designer scents and going more niche. I’d rather have 1 great bottle then 7 ok ones

  • @RichMitch
    @RichMitch 4 года назад +25

Depends really. Encre noire a la extreme smells better than 90% of what is released by niche houses that regularly go for 10 times the price, even at discounters.
The Price/Quality equation is a judgement call, with all the pitfalls that that entails

The three Encre Noires were among the very first things I got when starting to collect fragrances about a year ago. That was I think after getting Nautica Voyage, Chanel Allure Homme, and Terre de Hermes EDT. To start a collection without spending too much yet getting awesome fragrances, any of the following must be high on the list:
      The three Encre Noires
      Mugler Cologne
      Burberry London
      Bentley Intense

For me if I am going to throw down a lot of money it will be for a fragrance that doesn't smell like anything else. One can always argue whether or not Salome from Papillon Artisan Perfumes is worth almost $200 for 50ml, but one can't say that it smells like a lot of other fragrances that are priced much lower. And I am least interested in niche fragrances that smell like a designer fragrance only it's much stronger or has slight variations. Meh.

I’ve yet to smell a clone or a copy of a more expensive fragrance that (disregarding the price and going simply by quality) is better than the more expensive. Including price there’s plenty of options that are great alternatives to expensive fragrances but if you’re on unlimited budget if you’re rich go the expensive fragrance is will nearly always be better (either a little or a lot better) in my opinion

This topic will always come up especially with some of the newer clones which are killing it. I smelled Al haramin before Aventus and when I was finally at a store ready to pay retail for aventus I just couldn’t pull the trigger. There was not enough of a difference, now with the the armaf milestone and the supremacy line it’s really coming close to say that these companies are making 1:1 versions even in terms of quality. We can’t get mad at the clone houses we need to start asking the original houses what the heck are we paying for

That question always came to my mind since I entered this fragrance journey, and after a while testing several fragrances and their clones I came to the conclusion that there's no standard answer to this question. Some clones are woth and some aren't. And I totally agree with you on Armaf's Tag Him, this fragrance is pretty bad in my opinion and has absolutely nothing to do with Bleu de Chanel EDT.

I was hoping in this video you would explain what is meant when one uses the word “quality” when assessing a fragrance. As best as I can determine “quality” is either a surrogate for price or a justification for a higher price point. A lower priced fragrance invariably is lower quality. I would love to see a blind test where reviewers compared fragrances at two vastly different price points and determined which was the better quality. For example, if comparing Cremo’s Bergamot & Musk versus Roja Elysium, which is the higher quality. I think you would be surprised with your findings.

Honestly, it’s a mixed bag. Price doesn’t necessarily mean quality and fragrance likability is very subjective. Sample, sample, sample.

Great concept Ash! I hope this idea continues! Btw, Tag Him is garbage compared to a largely unknown Armaf BDC clone called Shades Blue. Give it a shot bro, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised! Goes for about $23 too!

Nice video as always. I was thinking, couldn't another "bleu de chanel" competitor be "acqua essenziale blu" by ferragamo?

Quite a different take on fragrance, interesting, I like it. Do this more often.

Great video like always. Pure Havane is also my choice for the price in that battle.

There isn’t much difference in manufacturing cost in cheaper and expensive fragrances. However, there is big difference in quality typically. It’s a matter of what you’re willing to spend. Personally, I will spend more if the performance is there. I’d like to use less sprays on expensive fragrances.

Everything is subjective. If you are willing to pay the high price, then it's worth it to you.
