The justice system in this country is pathetic, a hard working man like Terry gets penalised for doing his job. Absolute joke the law is pitted against law abiding citizens like Terry but protects the dregs of society. He got bad legal advise - looks like the lawyers aimed to close the matter quickly and at minimal cost. Had he fought the matter he had a good chance of winning or at the least in a worst case scenario of getting the same outcome - a conviction leading to a criminal record which he could then appeal etc. A custodial sentence was never likely on the agenda in such a trivial matter so it looks like the damage here was self inflicted on the back of bad advise. I very much doubt that Daniel would have taken the guilty plea in such a situation.
