  • 🌟 My final week of the Clutterbug Holiday Challenge Laundry Overhaul & Festive Flourish! 🎄✨
This week was meant for a family room deep clean that I sprinkled in Christmas cheer. But, I changed my course of direction, and decided the holidays are getting so close that it was time to find a new focus. (I guess starting several weeks behind really does hinder one's success at the challenge).
🧺Instead of deep cleaning the family room. I give you a Laundry Room Marathon: The laundry room, my stress zone, took the spotlight. Over 15 loads of laundry later, I can proudly say I've conquered the laundry mountain! 🚀
🎄 Before we bid adieu to the Clutterbug challenge, I managed to weave some holiday magic into the family room. Because why not embrace the joy of Christmas in a clean and cozy space? 🏡🎁
As we wrap up, it's not just about physically decluttering; it's about freeing the mind. Join me in bidding farewell to chaos and welcoming a space that radiates serenity.

I shake out my laundry before it goes in the dryer. However, it's only my husband and me, he does his own laundry. I asked him to do his stinky, wet tennis and basketball clothes. It just grossed me out. He gladly did it and then did all his clothes. Boy, if I'd only known! It feels so good to complete a task! Take care, Linda 🦋

Best way to get cat urine out is to use that descenting spray that you find in the hunting section for removing scent from hunters clothes. Kinda spendy, but cheaper than throwing out clothes. Just soak the area with the spray, let it sit overnight, then wash it.

I found it helpful to add a couple of the wire shelves on the wall where I could reach them to store cleaners and such (got them from Walmart and it was easy to hang). Also 10 loads--I too would be overwhelmed. So I reduced the amount of clothing I had and over time I’m down to 5 loads per week for 3 people.

Great job! Not sure how you feel about it but you could just take the doors off the cabinets so you don't have to open them to sort the laundry. Our family is very out of sight out of mind so if an organizer isn't immediately available then it just gets piled to be dealt with later.

I shake out the towels before putting them in the dryer so that they dry quicker.

I shake out every piece of laundry as well! I read the tip in a parenting magazine years ago. It improves your dryer efficiency by 10-15% because the air can move more freely through the pieces because they are not tangled together. I think it helps!! 😊

Ok, ok! Now I like hearing some reasoning behind it! Thank you for sharing that! Now that my laundry room is not a pile of clothes, it seems like it would be easier to add to a routine too! (I like saving energy! So your reasoning behind the action is super helpful!) ❤️

I definitely do not shake everything out before putting it in the dryer. I do shake out sheets, especially fitted ones, because they get twisted up and don't dry well, but that's it.

One idea if you or your husband are handy. You have 4 cabinet doors - and 4 types of laundry to sort (red, dark, light, whites). You could turn those cabinet doors into tilt storage or pull out storage (and the perfect time to paint the whole thing pretty while you're at it) Each cabinet would hold one of the categories. For bins you could use kitchen trash cans or those pop up laundry bins. When it's full, you take it out and dump the clothes right into the wash. The laundry baskets you have now, would just be used to take clean clothes upstairs. They could also be used to put dirty clothes in, to be taken downstairs daily and put in the sorters. The downside, is that you'd lose storage in the cabinets. But a simple set of racks on the wall between the cabinet and the dryer - which I notice is now nice and empty :) - and use that for anything you're currently storing on or in the cabinet. And you have a nice clean counter top for folding/sorting clean laundry. For the laundry baskets - I suppose they could live on top of the dryer, if not used upstairs. Or maybe a few hooks on the wall over the washer and dryer? Keeping them up off the surfaces. I really like to keep surfaces free of stuff if I can. It makes it a lot easier to keep up on the dusting - since it's just a quick wipe, instead of moving stuff around like you were doing on the washer. I've also seen shelves that go right about the washer/dryer for storing the detergent and softener (vinegar). Keeping it within arms reach, but neater. And they have magnetic lint bins for the side of the dryer....although I like your little trash can. Sorry to hear about your pupper. I just had to put one of my cats to sleep, and was a mess for a week. But he was my cat with "issues" - and I've finally been able to really get cleaning since I'm not constantly cleaning the carpet and litter box. I've gotten half my living room back now. Just removing his litter box gave me a ton of room - it was taking up a good 4 x 4 chunk of the living room. Our journey continues!! But we've got this!!

I am so sorry to hear about your kitty. It is never easy to loose our loved fur babies. I LOVE your ideas to make the space better! (I am not what I would call handy, BUT the laundry room feels like a good space to start learning!!) And, painting those cabinets and the room is high on my list of things I want to do to our house!!! It sounds like you are making huge progress in your space! Keep it going! You are not in this alone! ❤ Thank you so much for watching, and sharing with me!

My husband does the wash when I realized most of it was his. Unfortunately he does not like the smell of vinegar. He also does the litter box, so don’t push the vinegar. Funny enough he also has the talent of shrinking, but I don’t know any better. Fabric softener is also real bad for washers.
You could continue the deep clean a long after the holidays.

I'm allergic to fabric softener too. Makes my skin burn and itch. My brother (the only other blonde in the family) actually ended up in the ER from a reaction to fabric softener. Plus any repairman will tell it's the worst thing for your washing machine. They implore people to forgo using it. Your decorations look so pretty!
Oh throwing the measuring cup in is a good tip!. I never ever had home ec so flylady is my teacher.

Well, aside from the deodorant trick and carrying around a flour baby for a week, I am not really convinced Home Ec. was necessary! 🤣 I have learned a lot from FlyLady too! AND an ER trip for fabric softener! That is so insane and scary! That fabric softener is nothing to mess around with!!

My husband;s dress shirts like to twist up in the washer. If I put them in the dryer just like that, they come out so wrinkled. So, yes, shaking them out is a thing. But I don't do it for everything.

I don't think of myself as a minimalist but I think that if I empty all my closet would I be able to say I have 10 loads of laundry to do. One time when my four children were home and I had been sick and still worked full time we were behind. My kids helped me load up the van with everything to go to the laundry mat. We stripped the beds, all of the towels and throw rugs. We had 12 loads. It would help if you would declutter first. My children and myself all have sensitive skin. I only use laundry soap and run the rinse cycle twice. All skin issues disappeared. My favorite trick is to hang shirts, dresses and pant right from the washer. I space the out in the closet to dry. Knit clothes shrink in the dryer. Cotton clothes wear out in the dryer. Granted it helps that I live in dry Arizona, but I started this habit in Wyoming which is dry and cold. Clothes took a little longer but their neat and put away. My motto or mantra is a load of laundry a day keeps the piles away. I put a load in every morning before work. Take it out, hang it up or put it in the dryer when I get home. I don't go to bed without that load being put away. Often there maybe the start of the next days load in the floor waiting for me to do tomorrow. My kids have a basket in their room because dirty or used clothes do not go on the floor. I never put my clean clothes back into a basket that had dirty clothes. Gross! Clean clothes are folded, hung and put way . I only touch my clothes to put them in the washer or dryer, to fold or hang them and put in the closet. Who would want to wear clothes that have sat all wrinkled in a dirty laundry basket or folded on the floor which I have seen many times on these programs?

Our vet put our kitty on fluoxetine. It has completely helped her on so many levels!
