Cover or not Mick Hucknalls voice is so amazing !
Yes; the original was by the Stylistics....also can be found on RUclips......but the original 2-part leads were sung by 2 singers....the falsetto by Russell Thompkins......but this version was amazing because he sang BOTH parts......and did an excellent job....
The Stylistics sang it first in 1973, but this version is great as well!
They were four singers. Here he sings all the parts, lows and highs

Yes this was a cover, originally done by the Stylistics, but they are just about identical. Its just an amazing song one my wife and I heard every week at night we would have the radio on soft rock station to fall asleep to. And if you're still upset with your pops, I'll go fishing with him , before I got sick I won 4 out of 6 fishing tournaments I qualified for and won big fish on 2 of those as well. MUSIC, MOTORCYCLES, AND FISHING, and outdoor Barbecues, my favorite things.

The Stylistics out of Philly sang the original version of this song. That's probably the one you heard in your dad's car. Mich has done a few covers and he has always done a fantastic job of it.

Thoroughly enjoyed your reaction as always Chod! Got a throwback blindside for ya, Gino Vannelli who had several top 10 hit songs in the 1970s and 1980s. His best-known singles include "I Just Want To Stop" and "Living Inside Myself". The live versions are just as good as the recorded so either are great.
I have long been a fan of Mick and Simply Red. His rendition of "Stars" to a Russian audience is fantastic! Check it out and you will be blown away!

Simply Red is the name of the entire band, the front man is Mick Hucknall. It’s just like Sade, that is actually the band’s name (Sade is the lead singer’s nickname.). This song is originally by the Stylistics and they sang it in falsetto, that’s probably who your dad is listening to .

The version your dad listened to was the Stylistic who were the originals.
How strong is the voice? You can tell by the distance between mouth and microphone. I don't know of any other singer who does that
your dad would defo be listening to the stylistics which had different singers doing the high and low parts unlike mick who does it all solo
The Stylistics did the best with this song, just as Simply Red do their own songs better than anyone else!

Chod, don't give your dad a hard time on this one, he isn't the original. The Stylistics are. Suggestion: Mick Hucknall, aka Simply Red, does "Sunrise" which is done to the music of Hall and Oates "I Can't Go For That" that is worth a listen. The Live at Roma 2015 version is awesome or there is also one from this same concert.
