    • @retrops4261
      @retrops4261 5 лет назад +46

      I've had students practice passages backwards as a way too make playing them correctly, easier! It works and deepens the understanding of the connections between the notes. Inverting, reversing and otherwise transposing is also a theme and variation technique composers have often employed to create the variation sections of music!

    • @dbruinsm132
      @dbruinsm132 5 лет назад +11

      RetroPS4 It doesn’t work like that bro, music most of the time is muscle memory, thus experience. I highly doubt trying to play or read the sheet-music backwards helps “understanding” the music better. Why not try and play it normally? XD

    • @retrops4261
      @retrops4261 5 лет назад +27

      @@dbruinsm132 to superficially memorize something yes it's muscle memory. However say it's a fast passage that is particularly troublesome for some reason, seeing and understanding how those notes connect is quite useful (especially in something really advanced or complex.)
      For example, large shifts (like Saint-Saens 3. Shifting down is just as important and sometimes harder than shifting up). Even though the shift goes up in the music practicing the reverse dirrection helps the hand feel and learn the motion more completely. Also a downshift can be harder sometimes and will affect intonation particularly. If this weren't true there would be no point to studying scales ascending and descending! Another reason to go backwards is because the notes will sound "new" it can give an ear-unbiased way to check intonation accuracy. (This was evident in Brett's playing as when he reversed the notes of Mahler he was out of tune (even after repeating it multiple times!!) Obviously playing an entire composition backwards would be a silly parlor trick. However, working a passage from it's basic elements breaking them apart, and then putting them back together is the path we take to learn something thorougly (so in performance, we are less likely to have a memory slip or make mistakes).
      Playing something backwards is just another tool that can be used to make the real thing seem easier. It is also probably not something that useful to do at tempo at least not in large sections.
      Remember, there are multiple stages to learning a piece, and each time we repeat the process, we gain a better, deeper understanding of it, especially from a compositional point. Learning a piece is much more than simply memorizing notes on a page.

      RetroPS4 Thanks a lot for the reply. Me myself I do not play the violin, actually played drums for 7 years, stopped and playing guitar for 3 years now. That basically means I do NOT Know any music theory, rhythm guitar is very easy now just listening to particular riffs and melodic riffs of a song(thank you my drum experience). But when it comes to lead guitar, it is horrible haha. I learned the solo from Master of puppets, night of long knives, One, unforgiven etc. By muscle memory it is easy, it just takes about a whole week to learn it. but now I finally understand after 3 years that understanding the individual parts of notes in kinda important to writing own pieces of music. Maybe I should give the whole backwards thing a try. Thanks man, maybe I will become LingLing one day

      Thanks for listening to my long-winded reply! And it's cool that a former drummer and aspiring metal guitarist is interested in classical 🎻 :) ..Or perhaps you are just here for the [excellent] comedy ✓ :p
      And yeah, I feel it really hits when you want to learn how to compose something yourself, this kinda thing is useful studying underlying melodic or harmonic structures.
      Anyhow, while the majority of my life I have devoted to studying classical music and violin, I definitely am a casual metal and prog fan as well!
      Oh and as to Ling Ling, we all ascribe to such impossible lofty aspirations:)

      And even in sci-fi context, that term is also misused: Tele = far, kinesis = movement, hence when I pick a box up by hands and throw it across a distance, that's telekinesis being applied on that box. Psychokinesis is the correct term to describe this ability, or literally, as the Chinese translation of it: 念力 (mind-force).
