The smaller screens on STD TV looks better, but just ok. One problem is the digital converter boxes have lower resolution than the old STD analog over the air signal had. The HD channels have outstanding pictures, the vintage TV programs vary considerably in picture quality, some have poor quality pictures, while others are better, HD reveals more of their flaws. . It does seem that METV does have the best vintage pictures available. Gunsmoke on METV on HD TVs is very sharp, but Gunsmoke has been very well remastered. I think some vintage TV stations operate more on a budget as some of their broadcasts have poor quality images less clear and dark due to less quality prints of old series. Digital over the air or not is the same, however I have heard that HD pictures are better when received over the air directly rather than through cable as there is no compression of the signal that is on some cable companies to save bandwidth. Many cable companies only offer 720p max on standard HD programming and offer 1080p only on pay per view movies to save bandwidth, this way they can offer more channels in 720p than the could with them all in 1080p which takes up quite a bit more bandwidth.

I just bought a 9 inch black and white from 1977 for the kitchen. LOL If we can't have classic Nick at Nite, the way it was when it was kinda sorta a cultural phenomenon, Antenna TV will do.

I use to have a little 5" GE portable in the kitchen with a digital
converter box, it was too small to watch, but I used it to listen to the
evening news. Now with a 24" I end up watching Gunsmoke, Laramie,
Hazel, and others while eating breakfast and reading the newspaper. Those digital converter boxes have less resolution
than the old original analog signal.
