That's bc this is Yu Chenghui. Read about him. I believe the two handed jian style was lost sometime in the Ming Dynasty. He worked for years to bring it back and now the form he made is an actual form in wushu competitions. Fascinating guy
One-handed sword was used for self-defense like pistol. And it is also a symbol of nobility. While the two-handed one can be used as long weapon with less range but better defense, and it have advantage from both machete and one-handed sword.
For this particular video, I think it's just to make the sword lighter so that you can move faster with it (again, for show). Also, I don't think it's aluminum. Possibly spring steel

true...I suppose I should have said sick of comments of uneducated and unpracticed commenters....detracting from the essence of anyone who practices there art to a skilled level for whatever purpose...the this vs that crowd...even the people who should know better...as to overstating anything kendo or fencing are guilty of the exact same thing and should change...its like point karate was in the sixties...pointless and created entire group of people who thought they could fight that couldn't again not all and overstated to drive the point...people who were true to themselves have always evolved there arts...Norris, Wallis,Lee...the guy in this video...me...(:
stephen allenbaugh There's such thing as blunted simulators for sparring, you know. :) While I completely understand why people would feel that weapon arts are tricky to safely practice in full-speed sparring, it is not even close to being as difficult as they make it out to be. For example, HEMA [Historical European Martial Arts] practitioners do it regularly with full-intent and speed--and not with wood, bamboo, or something comparable to hilted car antennas; but with metal sword simulators that look, weigh, feel, and handle like the real thing. As for protection, it's usually done in a fencing mask, a padded fencing jacket, gloves, and elbow & knee pads. (And many wear only this much for tournaments and such.) Considering how the only thing that separates most arts is a thin veneer of aesthetics, (There's only so many ways to kill with a 3-foot rod-like object) there is absolutely no reason it can't also be done with other arts. :) In fact, judging from what we have learned from sparring, I would say it is absolutely indispensable to go from simply knowing the motions to truly understanding one's art! I've found that it's exactly like language-learning: you can study grammar and syntax all you want. However, the only way you will ever be able to actually speak the language is if you actually practice SPEAKING in the first place! Otherwise you will end up like any high school student, who knows the theory, yet is totally helpless once he can't use some pre-prepared sentence. ("How do you do?", "Where is the bathroom?", etc.)
HipposHateWater Good for you...and I know....Higher conciousness thru harder contact...progressive resistence againt a resisting opponent is the only way to learn what works and what doesnt...otherwise one is kidding oneself...safety first..is why its progressive resistence as ones skill grows raise the level of resistence...been watching alot of the HEMA ...and quite frankly the Chinese or Japanese would have a world of problems...no guard or to small a one on there swords...to start with...there is good in all ...take what works for you from each...discard the rest...creating your own style...with your own attributes
