You lost me at 6th floor walkup, and the graffiti clinched it. They installed the washer and dryer because the previous tenant died of a heart attack lugging their laundry up and down the stairs, or maybe they fell down those dangerous stairs to the small roof deck. The kitchen is tiny and the living area is cramped. The "balcony" has just space for a table or a chair, but not both. For this someone who makes upward of $160,000 is going to pay $4,000/month? Not in my world.

No. Just No. I wouldn't make it past the trashy graffiti, so I definitely wouldn't climb all those stairs. But, laundry in unit is nice. I feel bad for the construction and renovation workers who had to haul all those appliances up there!

I live in Montreal and pay 770$ CAN for a 2 bedrooms, double size living room and a big kitchen apartment. I think it's like less then 600$ US. I really don't understand why it's so expensive in NYC.
Of course, there is expensive apartments in Montreal, but you can still find amazing places not too expensive. My brother has a 5 bedrooms (plus a kitchen and living room) with a backyard and parking space and pay 1700$ in Montreal.

Supply and demand is the answer to most things in a free market economy... The more someone wants something, the more the price will rise. Montreal is a beautiful city, but its "economic value" for an apartment there is $600, but because NYC has more demand for apartments, the "economic value", price is $4000.

Who held the camera when you did your drive by scene on your bike?
There are several comments about the asking price. To me, the washer/dryer in unit & the private roof deck makes it worth it. And the apt is in pristine condition. However, since the rooms are so cramp, I would definitely recommend furnishing this living space with a minimalist point of view. Great video tour.

It's funny that you said the fridge freezer was expensive because the freezer was on the bottom. In the UK, most fridge freezers are built this way, even the really cheap ones. Interesting how different things are across the pond

$4000 for a cramped studio that's been cut in half and made into a "one bedroom." Hideous roof deck. Why would you want to spend any time right there? It's so ugly. Ugly view out the windows, essentially no closets, basically a tenement home. Awful.

NYC had a capitol on getting anything you want delivered for the last 70 years...just now the rest of the country has Instacart. It took a while. That is why people can do a lot of stairs. NYC is a walking city. People in general are more fit. Heck, you have to do a lot of stairs just to leave the subway.

I didn't get past the steps, whew. I was in a 3rd floor walk-up and that was bad enough. Hey, not everybody has a problem with steps, but you'd have to have some really good close friends to help you move your furniture into that place. I remember Macy's coming to my 3rd floor walk-up and they were not happy at all. The steps aren't the problem with furniture, it's turning the stuff at the landing that's really the problem. It's kind of cute but the terrace is really useless and the rooftop, no privacy. All kinds of locks on the roof door, but it's glass, so locks really are useless. I could see students in this apt, two at the most. It's not horrible, actually it's kind of cute.

Speaking practically, this isn't a bad deal. Walkups are a pain but how else can you get a fairly spacious and well-lit 1br in Manhattan for $4k? Graffiti helps keep the rent down.
