  • Yesterdays - Tony Scott & Horst Jankowski Trio - In Concert (1957)
    Photograph by: Josef Koudelka
    Personnel:
    Tony Scott (Clarinet and Saxophone)
    Horst Jankowski (Piano)
    Peter Witte (Double Bass)
    Herman Mutschler (Drums)
This completely unknown recording (which is not even listed in discographies) from the Dutch Jazz Life label contains some brilliant music. Clarinetist Tony Scott and pianist Horst Jankowski match together very well, and the rhythm section ( which is otherwise unidentified ) is perfectly supportive of the lead voices. Recorded live in Ljubljana ( former Yugoslavia ), the music ( three standards and four basic group originals ) finds Scott in particularly inspired form. He romps through the uptempo pieces, and his tone is often at its coolest during the more thoughtful numbers. Although this 1990 CD is quite obscure and there are no significant liner notes, the music is quite rewarding and frequently exciting. Scott Yanow, AMG

This belongs to the very few jazz records by Horst Jankowski which are available. He played pop music most of the time, for a decent living. What a waste of talent!

      You`re right, Mr. Noone .
The same with the old german piano jazzer
Wolfgang Lauth . In late 50`s Lauth played almost pop.
I believe the (post-) modern jazz in germany was
mostly ignored in record shops at this time .
