Thanks Bill! I'm glad it was helpful. I'm getting ready to change my oil also. Amsoil has a kit for the Defenders now. I haven't used mine yet but it looks good.
Thanks a lot for that! Changing mine today.. I love how well thought out the CanAm Defender was right out of the gate. The new Ranger had to redesign and copy. However a couple more horses would be nice! 😉
Thanks for the video I just got the HD eight with only 40 miles on it I have a ways to go before I change the oil but you made it look pretty straightforward
Hey brother - good video. What's that oil you're using? Shell? What weight. I'm using the XPS from the Can-Am dealer, but it's pricey. Thanks, Old Mort (2019 Defender HD10/XT Cab).
Thanks Mort! I have been running Shell Rotella Synthetic because its considered to be a quality oil. I think the manual only recommends Can-Am oil though so use at your own risk. Off the top of my head I can't remember the weight. Possibly 10W40????
Man what a great video, just the right amount of information and great views of what you were doing. I feel like you lost that washer on the bottom drain bolt though!
Hahaha! Thanks Nick and you're right! I got it all back together and then found the washer in the bottom of the drain pan! I've been keeping an eye on it though and still no leaks.
First of all, thank you for the video. Secondly, it seems to me that for the oil filter bolts there is a recommended tightening pressure, is that correct?
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I just changed my defender oil/filter a couple of days ago. I'm sure there is a torque recommendation from the factory for those bolts but I don't know what it is. It may tell in the manual. Not that it is the best practice, but I normally don't torque items like this with a torque wrench. Just be very careful not to strip the threads because the bolts thread into the engine case (difficult to fix if you strip them). If you are concerned about your ability, find the torque value and use a torque wrench. I'm sorry that I'm not able to help with that torque number.
Thank you very much for your reply plozikou. I checked my user manual and wanted to clarify the torque specs. These numbers came out of the manual for my 2016 Defender. Drain plug torque: 30 Newton-meters (22 foot-pound). Oil filter cover bolts: 10 Newton-meters (89 INCH-POUNDS). Be very careful when you’re reading that. The American/English units are different between the two bolts. One is foot-pounds and the other is inch-pounds. The oil filter cover bolts get about 1/3 of the torque as the drain plug. That is only around 7 foot-pounds for the oil filter cover bolts. I’m sure you know that plozikou but I wanted to make it clear for someone who might read it in the future.
Dealer told me oil needed to be changed at 200hrs. Thought it was a no break in period engine and no maintenance until first year or so? I know it doesn't hurt.
At the moment I can't remember what the manual says but I like to get the fine metal out of the engine after a short break in. 2.5 years later I still only have about 110 hours on it. I wouldn't want the original oil in there that whole time.
Any ideas where oil filter located on 2020 can am limited. BRB Forum stated it faces forward to cab, different cast of engine. Any help here appreciated Thank you
Found it, front of engine behind fire wall. One thing you better have is an extendable magnet. Inevitably you will drop one of the bolts, I didn't but then the ratchet slipped out of my hand, easy to retrieve as long as you have extended magnet to fish it out. Absolute ridiculous location for access, not shown in manual!
What weight oil do you use or r e commend. I saw rotella synthetic. Do you buy oil filters from dealership. Also was curious about other required maintenance like grease fittings, rear end and front diff , and transmission diy maintenance. I just bought my HD8 used and want to go over everything so i know its tip top shape.
If I remember correctly, I used Rotella T6 synthetic 5W-40. The dealership filters are pretty good I think but I ordered a K&N oil filter. It's probably a similar quality to the Can-Am factory filter. The manual should have oil type and quality guidelines in it so you should take a look at those. I wouldn't want you to use a certain oil or filter and have it be a problem for your warranty.
My 2016 Defender owners manual says this about reseting the maintenance message, if you have the same gauges as I do: To erase the MAINTENANCE REQUIRED message, proceed as follows: 1. Select PARK. 2. Turn ignition switch to ON. Do NOT start engine. 3. Set the cluster to odometer display. 4. Press SET button on the multifunction gauge and keep it pressed until step 6. 5. Switch the high beam On-Off three times rapidly. 6. Turn ignition switch to OFF. NOTE: Steps 4 and 5 must be completed within 5 seconds. NOTE: Do not turn ignition switch to ON before the multifunction gauge turns off.
I'm running Rotella T6 synthetic. It can be used in diesel or gas motors. I believe if you read reviews on it, you'll find that it's' a high quality oil. Of course you're free to run whatever you want in your machine.
Hey Carlos! I have not seen the maintenance service alarm on my machine but this is what the manual says (it appears the process is the same for both gauge styles): To erase the MAINTENANCE REQUIRED message, proceed as follows: 1. Select PARK. 2. Turn ignition switch to ON. Do NOT start engine. 3. Set the cluster to odometer display. 4. Press SET button on the multifunction gauge and keep it pressed until step 6. 5. I have Rotela synthetic in mine I believe but that is not what the owners manual suggests. It's kind of personal preference. Can-am does have their own oil.
Getting ready for my first oil change and have watched 3 videos. Yours had the best camera work and good instructions. Thanks!
Thanks Bill! I'm glad it was helpful. I'm getting ready to change my oil also. Amsoil has a kit for the Defenders now. I haven't used mine yet but it looks good.
Very nice video, I was going to take to an ATV shop to have them do it....Not now you just saved me some money! You explained the oil change perfect!
Thanks! Just take your time and it should go smoothly!
Awesome "how to". I wish ALL the ones I need info. from could be as straightforward easy to watch. Nice job.
Thanks a bunch J P! I'm glad it was helpful!

You're welcome! I'm still loving my Defender!
Excellent "how to" video ... very complete and informative. I agree, it is "God's Country"!
Thanks Jeff! I'm happy it helped you!!!

I'm glad it helped David! It is straightforward once you know where everything is and what to expect.
Nice explanation! Love the color of your bike!
Thank you Bryan! I'm glad it helped!
Would love to see a update on that sweet shop you built
Great instructional video. I'd love to see more from you on other maintenance areas on the Defender. Thanks again.
Thank you Preston! I will try to do more videos on the Defender.

Good Video, Just had my first(and last) change done at dealer, $126.00 later. Next time I will do it.
Thanks Mike! Yes, it's not a difficult task.

What about the other brass washer that comes in the kit? I didn't see where that went?

Wow, that sounds like a much more difficult location! I'm glad you found it. Thanks for your comments.
Thanks for the video. I would not use Rotella, its not made for small gas engines.
Rotella synthetic has a great reputation. I feel fine about running it in my Defender. And my boat.
I run rotella in my defender as well.

What about Gear oil? When and how did you do your first change?
I haven't done any other fluid changes yet. I'm at 65 hours. I need to check my manual to see what the change intervals are.
I called and was told it was supposed to be done at 300-400km or 30hrs? Hmmm.
Looking forward to that video then. :)

I was trying to find out when to change oil and you are doing it at 20 hours. I have 40 hours...
I just personally don't like the break-in oil (and associated metal particles) to stay in an engine for a long time.
