  • This is a frightening security breach. A terrible disaster could happen. This was originally a report on the millions of people hopping the Los Angeles Metro Rail subway turnstiles and riding for free. We were shocked to find there is basically no police presence underground. Reporter David Nazar investigates.

The line that needs the most police presence is the Blue line. Not only do a lot of people not pay the fare, there's so many people breaking the rules (eating, putting feet on chairs, etc.) there needs to be some sort of watchdog to report all these people.

Red Line is a hobo-highway. The homeless and mentally ill use the rails to go to all parts of the city for free. If you have ever seen the end of the Red Line in North Hollywood, you would turn in your Metro pass and start driving again. This system has gone to the dogs and it is because the police cannot do anything to anyone. Thank you Garcetti for having no police..

This story is IRRELEVANT as of early 2018. Los Angeles subway and light rail stations and trains have substantially beefed up security. Los Angeles Police Department Officers are always found riding the trains and in the stations and significant enforcement procedures have been put in place for obnoxious passengers. Riding the Subway and Light Rail in Los Angeles is a pleasurable, fast, clean and efficient mode of transportation in the year of 2019! This story was indeed one of the motivating factors for the Los Angeles MTA to improve the security...so we owe David Nazar a huge thanks for getting it out there!!

Contrary to what was stated about other systems, in particular, New York, "crawling with cops", well that's largely untrue. You may see a heightened police presence at certain high-traffic stations in Manhattan (e.g., 42nd Street Times Square, 34th Street, etc.) but police rarely patrol in outer-boroughs - which leads to a problem of vagrants sleeping on trains. I would say the NYC subway is mostly safe, as long as you stay alert, keep to yourself and don't make eye contact (sunglasses are a necessity). I've been riding it for nearly 30 years and have only had a few of incidents.

  • @dany456789

This is how you do it:
Have the metro trains depart at a specific time and on time. Then people will be more dependent on the train’s schedule. Thus more people will find the train ticket worth it.
Next, have at lest 3-4 people at the turnstiles. Just having personnel there can discourage free rides. And as a bonus it can help people who have questions.
    Lastly, hire more security.

There're metro cops, in groups of 2, that randomly board and go through the train cars all day asking for tickets . Sometimes they walk platforms checking tickets. LA's subway system is so spread out and there are so many people in it that's its easy not to run into them, but that's only if you are in there for a short amount of time and catch a train to a couple stops . If, however, you stay in there a while or ride trains regularly, then you'll see the police a lot.

I live in Central Europe and tend to visit Prague, Czechia quite often. The metro there? There are absolutely no ticket barriers-not even things to leap over. You just walk into the station and there you are. Of course you have to pay for it, and as far as I know, almost everyone does. A yearly pass for the whole Prague transit costs CZK 3650, which is approximately $159. For students and elderly it’s just $79. The fines for riding for free are somewhere between $50 and $70. If you meet more than two inspectors per year, you’re already in loss. Probably that’s why everyone pays for it.

Wow, this was five years ago?? It has only gotten way worse!!! Tickets are the least of our concerns. Calling on our city councilmen and the metro transit is a joke. Sending letters is a joke. They send you to their "safety video," that is also a joke. Then they want you to report, "A date, A time, A location, and THE incident." Which is a joke. How about multiple, unsafe and unclean behaviors that take place THROUGHOUT the ride, from Long Beach to Hollywood (blue and red lines) and back at multiple times of the day, 10am or 8pm, by multiple people, at multiple times. When security comes on, they get off at the next stop and do nothing. When we ask the security about this, they say there is nothing they can do. Why are they there then? They also have cameras that see ALL of this! We've taken the metro line back and forth weekly for the last year (2021) from Long Beach to Hollywood, and it's been a truly horrifying, traumatizing experience. It's a rolling homeless shelter and drug house, mental health clinic. The mayor encourages people to take public transit, that is also a joke since there is NO accountability and ways to make rides safer and cleaner. The list goes on of what we've seen: open masturbation, urinating, fights, picking and trying to antagonize people who have their heads down minding their own business, eating and drinking and then throwing liquid and food on the floor, vaping, smoking, also throwing these items on the floor LIT! Also sleeping, taking up multiple seats while sleeping, no masks, multiple LOUD boomboxes competing for air time, agitated, strung out people getting on with bare chests and open coats filled with visible weapons and guns. This is another reason LA (and maybe other cities) will ALWAYS have a car culture, who wants to ride that mess?

Do the Metro stations have CA's (Customer Assistants inside booths at every station like we do here in Chicago. In cause some one needs help, they press a button on the platform and a voice will come over the speaker system "CUSTEMER ASSISTANT IS NEEDED AT THE MONROE STRRET PLATFORM" insuring where ever the CA' is they will hear it.

Subways are NOT safe stay in a group of people and don’t go alone !!! Invest in theft proof gear for your travels! Why pay for a ride if you can get it for free it’s ridiculous that you have to pay for a ride for a common ride !
Pickpockets operate BIG time in subway systems ! Things should be free in life they charge people too much these days it’s ridiculous !

LA Metro and Blue Line security/ police are a joke! 2nd visit from Hawaii in the past month. Just started using TAP today 8/4/21. Saw LE personnel not enforcing s#%|! Nicely uniformed but just for show. Took Metro from Santa Monica to Union Station 🚉 and back for sightseeing. Thugs, non paying riders, saw guys eating and one dirty hoho drinking a wine in a box pint from 7th and Metro to SM on the E line. No body enforcing any rules. Saw a display of like $250 fine and 48 hours of community service but is any one held accountable? I was all about making sure I was using my TAP app correctly and following rules only to see several scrubs doing the opposite. Disgraceful!!

It’s only a crime not paying the fares if these metro are owned by the country government, otherwise is not a crime, it’s just poor business.

Why don't they jus employ people to stand at the barrier and check people are tapping in and out? They would pay for themselves 10 times over. It is clear that his is a policy of having a free metro system and if anyone wants to help pay then there is a machine to pay money if you feel you should!

Los Angeles has become a lawless city, partly due to the city becoming a Sanctuary City. That means no one can ask anything of anybody. Downtown Los Angeles was trying to become a 24-hour city and the condition it is in right now, is horrific. It is the dirtiest and ugliest city. Downtown is just disgusting. Why anyone would make this a home is beyond me.
