- With the Approach Mode of the A320NX not currently functioning for a RNAV/RNP approach, this video shows you how to perform the approach using FPA (Flight Path Angle) mode instead. This video also shows you the new V/DEV (brick) which works a like a Glideslope indicator.

amazing tutorial. Now I feel more confident flying to airports without ILS!
Now go ahead and try NZQN Runway 05, because I came here to watch this after a few too many close calls there :--)
As you are flying Managed NAV with Selected FPA you should use the LNAV minima not the LNAV/VNAV minima (520). This is for the fully managed approach, using the APPR button. The 'brick' is nice but you should use the distance altitude check from the chart to monitor your profile. Remember to set your Missed Approach alt. Keep it up.
Thank you for your message. This video is just to show a workaround for the inop APPR mode function. A full, more detailed proceedure video for this will be available soon in the Real World Proceedures tutorial series.
I have probably nearly 1000 hours in this plane in various different states and I never knew about the fpa mode. That's so much easier for descents than using v/s and having to multiplying my GS by 5. Cheers!
Thanks a lot for this great tutorial, I tried it with yesterday's A32NX DEV version for St. Maarten (TNCM) and it worked almost perfectly, with one exception, the green V/DEV brick didn't come down for whatever reason.
Awesome explanation & demonstration. Takes all the stress out of doing an RNAV approach. Looking forward to trying this!
I did a practice RNP approach yesterday and completely forgot about the fact FBW had taken this out for time being... this ending with a go around for me.. so got practice doing the go around procedure... so not bad time usage
One thing is for to asure ur success.... u have to know ur aircraft and u have to know ur skills :) Great video mate!!!
Tried this tonight but overshot the runway. Didn't realize the FPA had a slight delay and came down too late. This was before I saw your video so thanks for your assistance, once again !
Literally been waiting for this!
Thanks for another very informative tutorial - great content and presentation style - top marks all round, another 'Like' from me. I have watched a few videos covering this subject and I think this is by far the best one out there. I watched this video a few times and made some notes before attempting to put what I have learned into practice using FBW A32NX on RNAV 07C EDDF (-3 deg) and you'll be pleased to hear that everything went to plan. That's it now, parking the ILS's for a while to practise RNAV's now that you have gifted me with the confidence to tackle something different.
Been dying for this! Many thanks!
Thanks Gav, this tutorial was long awaited indeed!!! As always, keep up the good work!!!!
Excellent tutorial, no wonder APR mode wouldn’t work. I’m flying a32nx experimental version 0.7.1 and loving it !
Thank you so much for this, I was confused as to why I wasn't able to activate the Approach Mode and wondering what I was doing wrong!
Why do we need to remove the FD after disconnecting the AP?
To avoid any autopilot commands from distracting your concentration on the bird flying the required attitude. Keep displays to a minimum and if you select the FD use it. If you don't switch it off. Confusing otherwise.
Nice and thx. Just a hint: you can dial in the - 3.00 a little before and then pull the knob when you want to start the descent.
It should be dialled in at 0.3mn from the FAF. 👍
Very good tutorial as always - nicely done step by step!
Really informative. Thanks!
Well explained, nice video, beautiful landing, thanks a lot.
Cheers and happy new year
Same to you 👍
Awesome tutorial and got this to work for me on the first try! The only exception is that I didn’t get the green brick (vertical descent). Any reason why? I’m in the flybywire, also in track fpa mode, past the final approach fix descending at -3 degrees. I wasn’t too high because it put me right on track to land in the touchdown zone so curious if maybe the brick isn’t coded to show up currently for some reason?
Excellent video - always enjoy the tutorials. Question - why do you have to take off the FDs if you are using FPA mode?
You only turn them off when you turn off the Autopilot and are in FPA mode. This is to ensure the Autothrust remains in SPEED mode.
@@Easyjetsimpilot Ah - ok thanks!
Thank you Gavin!
Thanks for the video, are rnav approaches currently working in the FBW a32x?
Thanks for another great tutorial :D
Thanks for the video, I have a question here; why did you use LNAV/VNAV minimums while it’s not a 3D approach? Thanks again
Thank you very much! Another amazing tutorial!
Many thanks.😎👍
Great tutorial Gavin. Thankyou.
Hey !! I do really like your videos, they are very informative. keep up the great job 😃
I do though have a question. I have recently tried to make myself a rnav approach with the flybywire a32nx in msfs. The choosen airport was lgir with rnav rwy 27. The problem was that in my example I was not able to see “ v/dev”. Did i do sth wrong ? I believe that i have imputed everything correctly in mcdu. what is the problem then ?
thank you very much in advance.
The VDev brick is still a work in progress and will not always work or appear.
This was really helpful!
just what i needed thank you..
good evening, as usual, very good video. you are in stable or dev (FBW) mod, because at this time, FBW's dev mod no longer does RNAV.
the stable mod the rnav still works.
thank you for your reply
super valuable, thanks!
can we still use the approach mod in the stable version ?
When will I ever get a clear response?
What is this video based on?
Are you a real life pilot, flying the A320?
Nothing against, Im curious.
Is this still applicable with the current versions of the a32nx? Or is the APPR mode button now implemented for RNAV?
Hello again, I tried the exact same approach with the airbus 320 and I cannot get the V/DEV of FPA to work. Any idea? Thanks
awesome stuff
thanks. that helps a lot
I am making this comment while FlyByWire version 0.9.x is active. Currently on FBW A320; both ways (Final App and TRK/FPA) RNP/RNAV approaches can be done without any problems.
Its confusing,as for today 7th july 2021 the V/DEV doenst show up in the screen of my plane, and i need to do the tutorial u did a few months ago...reduce the altitude and then put the 3 degrees...
My approach button no longer work (For RNAV) (FlybyWire)(A320) when approaching runway. It works on ILS mode but not RNAV. RNAV does work with the regular Microsoft a320. It used to work every time, but maybe FLYBYWIRE changed the way RNAV have to be setup? Yes. I do follow navigraph charts for the right RNAV approach altitud.
FINAL APPR mode (for RNAV) no longer works for the Flybywire mod. You have to use NAV/FPA until they have fixed it. 👍
Yes, i like it.
Has FBW made Approach button functional? Just curious since this video is about 8 months old. Thank you!
Not yet.
@@Easyjetsimpilot ): waiting so long lol
In the fenix would you still press APPR for an rnav/gnss approach? or is it just for an rnp
In the Fenix, the FINAL APPR mode works so yes, you can press the APPR for this.
@@Easyjetsimpilot what approaches would you not use appr
LOC approaches, or RNP (when temperature prohibits FINAL APPR)
The atr72-600 ?
Can you please help..i was able to start both my engines on flybywire..not now..any help please??
Does any one know if this works with the Headwind A330?
Nice video, but quite a few errors (MDA, early stabilised app, procedure…etc, etc).
You can fly RNAV approach using a decelerated approach without issue. There are some circumstances where an early stabalised approach is called for (ie when the FAF is only a few miles from touchdown) but different airlines also have SOPs for this in their airport briefs.
@@Easyjetsimpilot not correct: a decelerated approach can only be flow when it’s fully managed.
@@prc6608 unfortunately this is a limitation of the sim, as the FBW cannot do this yet. However, we can in the Fenix A320.
I've tried FPA a few times w/-3 degrees and it works, but there is a problem. If my FAF is 2000, and I have 2000 ft set, when I engage FPA, it will not descend below 2000 until I dial the altitude down to the MDA or so...500' roughly. Any ideas why?
You need to pull the V/S dial to command the descent (assuming your in the FBW or the Fenix mod)
Is this still valid? Tried this technique today at KLGA RWY 31, and it was a disaster. At 1700 ft, as soon as I got to ZARID, I set the LPA to -3.1, and instead of descending, the place went nose up and started accelerating very quickly. I had to shut off AP and use the PAPI and hand fly it.
Yes - this is still 100% accurate. Sounds like something else wasn't set correctly and you entered TOGA LK.
@@Easyjetsimpilot Yeah, I definitely saw TOGA LK. Any idea what would cause that? Maybe I forgot to put it back in managed speed mode after slowing it down?
Can't hear a thing you're saying. Up the volume to 3x for the next video
First time....first
did they fix it meanwhile ?
Not yet.
So I clicked on this video because I need to know how to properly fly an RNAV approach for an approach I'm about to do, and it just so happens that the approach I want to do is the approach shown in this video
Tha was lucky 🤣
I thought glidepath worked with RNAV. I think I've flown that before.
Same here
Only on the Stable build which does not use the custom AP built by the Flybywire team.
@@Easyjetsimpilot Oh, I see. Thanks! It's been a bit since I flew the A320NX with RNAV, but I have been running the experimental version for a while. Might just not have realised!
Is this guy eating a sandwich while he is speaking ?
