Introduction to Illustration with Mixed Media is a 5-part beginner series introducing you to the dual worlds of illustration and mixed media, designed and taught by professional illustrator Sarah van Dongen (@sarahvandongenillustrations). This course will take you from a total beginner to feeling comfortable enough with the techniques and mediums to create original illustrations.
Preview the course with this Demo, where Sarah will illustrate a simple figure in a sketchbook to demonstrate mixed media techniques.
At the end of the course, a 3-hour class is available where Sarah guides you through completing a full illustration, reinforcing everything you learned in the course.

I really admire how she made it her own!
It is really interesting to see how other artists work. Especially when it’s different from the way I work.
It's truly interesting, Esther! Hope you enjoyed watching! 🧡
I absolutely fully enjoyed this and so can't wait to do the class x
That's wonderful! 😍 We'll see you there!
Sarah’s podcast (with 2 of her friends), Thriving Women Artists, is excellent.

Love this video! It’s the perfect combination of being able to observe Sarah as she creates, seeing how the materials work with each other, great info on the materials used and I loved the sketchbook tour as well. Phenomenal host as well! ❤

This is great! I love Sarah's work!!! I was wondering what square sketchbook she uses and the one she shows after that too. I'm really trying to figure out what sketchbooks to get, and I like those formats. :)
Hello hello. From Esther in Ontario, Canada
Does Sarah mention the type/brand of crayon she uses at any point? I’ve watched it twice now and must have missed it both times 😂
Hey John! Here's Sarah's response: "It’s neocolor 2 by Caran ‘s Ache" 🧡
What had her try acrylic guache?
Hi, Heidi! Here is Sarah's answer: "''Because I wanted to try something else'' 🧡
We don’t bite
Sarah I like your choice of colours, but the figures lack musculator and rounded form. I know it is fashionable to paint flat illustrations at the moment, regular figure drawing would help as would plein air sketching. This is not a criticism of your work, just a helpful suggestion.
Everyone has their own unique style 🧡 But thank you for the feedback, Jenny!
Book-style illustration is very often how Sarah paints the figures, particularly for children's illustrations. It's a known style, not necessarily an inability to do photorealism.
