I learned on back harnesses in rough deeper water conditions. When I bought my initial setup I got the Mystic Marshall seat harness because it was on sale for $120. Been using it for about a year. I don't know if using a seat harness is helping or hurting progression. I'm gonna get a back harness and see. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for sharing your experiences with using a seat harness. For learning it definitely can be easier using a seat harness. As you progress My recommendation would be to go to a waist harness. I would stick with mystic harnesses they are definitely our favorite at kitepaddlesurf. Thanks again for watching our video!
I'm still learning kiting but my instructor uses a seat harness of his own design. I used to windsurf back in the 80s and I still have my old seat harness (but I was 50lbs lighter then) and I am surprised to hear that lots of kiters look down on seat harnesses. Looking at the physics of it, I would think it would be better to be connected by your center mass and a lot less tiring. I heard a sort of joke about waist harnesses really being chest harnesses because that's where they end up-sliding up you. Even in place at your waist, I could see how it might jam up and injure your ribs. I did see a video of a kiter who had hurt his ribs and had to go to a seat harness to let them heal because the waist harness aggravated the condition. Anyhow, if/when I become a competent kiter, I am going with a seat harness as I already have back issues from a bad skydiving landing and generally abusing my body in various activities.
I ride waist harness and boardshorts and like customer mentioned the pro and con’s I can agree on but when I’m riding waist harness I use an impact vest to prevent it becomes an chest harness.. the short harness is really annoying for riding toeside like he also mentioned.. I mainly use the shorts during winter time when I’m just cruising around (don’t wanna hit the water to much)
Seat harnesses are great. As you progress the kite will often be lower in the sky as you ride around and this reduces the upward pull into the harness. (other than jumps). The comfort and mobility of the waist harness is the reason they are popular. Let us know how to help.
Thank you! No one is reviewing or comparing these two. My one complaint with seat harnesses is mobility - not being able to bend at the waists as easy. Any insights on that between these two?
The Mystic is going to allow more range of motion because of its lower profile. If you're wanting more range of motion, then definitely go that direction. Thank you for watching the video we appreciate it. Let us know if you have any more questions.

It's easier to hold power down with a seat harness. Just look at kitefoil racers. What are they wearing? Seat harness.
True seat harnesses do help with holding more power down. Thanks for the info, and watching our breakdown of seat harnesses.
