Riding My Can-Am SPYDER On Route 66...Let's Start in Chicago!

- Route 66, aka The Mother Road or America's Highway. TommyG and I had the bucket list idea to ride this iconic road in its entirety from Chicago, IL to Santa Monica, CA, so we did! We spent three weeks out on Rt. 66 during June and have some great highlights to share with you from each state. Route 66 encompasses 8 states and almost 2500 miles from beginning to end and is filled with other travelers from all over the world who are also fulfilling their Route 66 dream. But first, we had to get to Chicago from our home in western PA. We hope you enjoy this first video as we venture to Chicago and arrive at the "Begin Route 66 sign". Love it! You guys put a smile on my face every time I watch your videos, for so many reasons (we'll count a few...). 1) You travel all over, seeing great parts of the country; 2) seeing Chicago street-level was so cool! (like scenes from so many movies filmed there); 3) you guys are so sweet and friendly - everyone Loves Po3 and TommyG!; 4) the commentary is very enduring and we can tell you enjoy seeing what you see on your trips; 5) you're not just vlogging a ride, you are sharing an experience, and incorporating all the joys and some heartaches that go with the trip!
I feel for you on the toll experience, that just looked unnecessarily painful! I had ordered an EZ pass and holder for my Can Am recently - haven't used it yet, but likely will in the next week. The mount should stay on my windshield (suction cups), but I'm attaching a cable in case it slips off. The bridge was a beautiful ride - one more to add to the list above: 6) your rides and visits are inspirational! Now I have to plan a similar trip! We're not retired yet, so that will have to be a vacation ride. Plus I don't know that my wife has built up that kind of endurance and desire just yet (but she's doing GREAT so far for someone who's only been driving a month!) 😄😄

TommyG planned a little route across PA and in to NJ...a two or three day trip as he called it...for next week or the week after. He asked if I was interested??? 😂😂😂😂Silly husband...heck yeah!! I hope your EZ pass stays put and works for you. I have received a new one since this trip in June. So excited that your wife enjoys riding so very much!! Hey Keith, just a suggestion for you to consider. I have a 2020 Spyder RT, and I keep my EZ Pass inside the lid of my frunk, just using the velcro strips that come with the transponder, that way it's out if sight and locked inside the frunk. I use EZ Pass a lot, in NY State, and recently used it many times in PA, and couple times further south, and even the border going into Canada. So far it's worked every time 100%, not one fail or miss in almost 2 years. I had put mine inside the lid of my frunk after seeing a RUclips videos about where people put their EZPass on their RT's.

@@PurpleOnThree for the upcoming Columbus Day weekend, we're supposed to do a long ride to and thru Shenandoah National Park. I may need it getting out there, so I can test it out. There's other toll spots where I'm located so the states will always try to get more of my money, LOL! When y'all get back and settled from your world tour, we can plot something out. Not sure how much more riding my wife will do as it gets colder - she's already dropping hints and it hasn't gotten that low yet! But I'm buying clothing and gear to ride as long as I can take it!

And the food!! Chicago deep dish pizza! Though we did not partake of any snacks while there..."in and out and nobody gets hurt!" It's ok that we missed the food because Junkyard Dadski made the BEST tacos we have ever eaten...oh my! In fact, he sent me on my way with a bottle of seasoning that traveled the country with me. Not sure why I never thought to mail it home with the t-shirts I sent home, lol 😂😂🤗🤗💜💜

We were certainly blessed to be able to see so much of this big, beautiful country! Guess what? Tommy was looking at a map of PA and has a little two or three day trip planned next week or the week after...he asked if I was interested???😂 Heck yeah! Have to change my oil first though!!

I am sooo jealous right now. I've been to, and seen that start sign in Chicago as I've worked in the city a lot. It immediately became a bucket list item. This will probably be my first trip if, and when, I ever retire.
First of all, kudos for working in the city a lot! We are just country bumpkins. When I was young a commuted to Pittsburgh for a job...the city has such a different feel to it. Yes! You definitely need to make this trip! How close are you to retirement? In 2026, the highway is celebrating it's 100th anniversary and we are hoping to go back...there are plenty of things we missed the first time! Appreciate you! 💜💜🤗🤗

I agree with all of that! My EZpass did not work in Florida earlier this year and I just got an invoice in the mail...that would be a whole lot easier I think! Wonder if the police also have to sit at the toll booth...if I were on the run, I think I may just get myself to a toll road and that way I would have a better chance of escaping, lol 😂

Hi Rochelle!! Yes, all our critters are our "kids" these days...the cats bicker just like our own two kids used to lol. So you have no luck with the toll trolls either?? On our trip to South Dakota, it was another Indiana toll booth lady on the helpline who told me I would have to pay an extra $1.00 because I did not have my transponder mounted in the proper place, lol. Whatever! You guys are going to have so much fun when you come and ride this route!! Are you going to be starting in Chicago? Where will you be flying to in the US? You are welcome to stay with us if you are anywhere near western PA...by golly, Pittsburgh has an international airport!! 😃😃💜💜

Who the heck has THAT? I had enough for one of us. We waited until another car came along and the guy in it gave us change for a dollar... 😅😅
@@PurpleOnThree Oklahoma has that for sure (one of my sons lives there)...the other I know about is Texas, as when we lived in Houston, we kept out cup holders full of change LOL. I hate the toll roads...I mean, cmon, this road has been paid for for YEARS, so cmon States, drop the toll road charges!

Love this...Route 66 has so much to offer. You started it off the right way. seen others that bypass the Chicago start sign.
Every rider should ride it at least once but at a slooooow pace. As may times as we've ridden Route 66, we still haven't seen all that it has to offer. I was so bummed that I couldn't meet up with you two (Stupid battery).

When I was in Chicago, it was snowing and bitterly cold.
It's the windy city with that cold air blowing off the lake! I would not want to be there in the winter!!

Toll machines can be really horrible. This is the case also in some European countries. I still prefer to pay to a guy in the "box". :) There I can be pretty sure that everything "is allright".

Tolls are such a pain.
A pain in the petutie!! They make me so nervous now...I want to have a big sign on the back of my Spyder that shows I have a "toll handicap" so don't come behind me unless you don't mind sitting for a day or so while we get it figured out, lol😂

The cows graze and we have a watering system so they are pretty self sufficient and apparently can get out of jail whenever they want!!😂 I'm feeling badly about myself right now...do you really think that lovely gentleman could outrun me???😂 I actually think I am a pretty good judge of character so I knew that lovely Brit was not going to run off with my phone. Guess what? At another toll booth in Indiana I had an issue and pressed the Help button...I read my transponder number to the gal and then she asked where I had my transponder mounted...I told her it was in my "glovebox" and you of course know where that is. She told me I would be charged another S1.00 for having it mounted incorrectly...What the heck????? Appreciate you watching! Enjoy Cali!!

I don’t think your yellow jacket is bright enough lol. Sucks that your transponder was giving you issues. It’s totally absurd that fire trucks have to pay the darn toll. I went to Chicago often while I worked. I believe there is a section of Route 66 that runs Arizona and I’ll try to hit it this winter. Ride safe.
That's my rain coat... Sometimes I wear it to cut out the wind when it's a little chilly. I now have a new transponder and I did not steal Tommy G's lol. Yes, there is a section in Arizona... We saw a lot of cool things there! I should have the Arizona video out before you head back!

Unfortunately it was in a car ,working on getting a spyder by next year, as for colorad6, it was gorgeous, love the mountains. once I get my Spyder wouldn't mind driving it to Colorado. : was watching your video, it is a great video.
